Welcome to Lowdown, DMG’s monthly e-newsletter. The aim of this newsletter is quite simply to keep everyone within DMG World Media (ME) informed with what is happening within the business and to keep you up to date as to what other members of our team have been up to - both professionally and personally. After all, we probably spend more time within our work environments and with our colleagues than we do with the most important people in our lives - our families!

The idea is to keep the content mainly light hearted where we will celebrate marriages and births and create a forum where you can find or buy items within the DMG (ME) Community (better to keep it in the family so to speak!) in our “Trading Space” section. In the Cultural Corner, you can even hone some of your language skills with a list every month of some basic useful Arabic words and phrases, as well as perhaps learn a few things that you did not know about living here. In our “What’s this 20 questions? ” section you will get an insight into some of your colleagues that you may not have met. And after you read about them you can then choose whether you want to or not (joke)!

Regular contributors will be Ian Stokes (President DMG, World Media, ME) who will give us a commentary on how we are doing as a business and share some of his insights and views on where we are heading. On the social front Craig Perry (Social Club Chairperson), will keep you up to date on any social events or initiatives that the Social Club is organizing in “Socially Speaking”. Ray Tinston, our roving socialite will deliver both a regular restaurant and entertainment review (Before you ask, no he doesn’t get an expense account!). In our Jobs section, you will be able to view internal job opportunities that are up for grabs as well as see who is sadly leaving us and who has joined us.

My personal aim, especially during these challenges times, is that this newsletter in some way helps to bring us all a little closer together not only as team members but as individuals who live in this most vibrant of business locations - the Middle East!

I hope you enjoy and find value in what we have done with our first issue, and would appreciate your constructive input on how we can improve the content in order to give you what you need. We will, no doubt have made some mistakes (my spelling is terrible) for that I already apologise (American spell checkers!), but I can assure you that we want to get it right and we want to keep improving the way we do things.

Namaste!

Welcome to the first issue of our newly created news letter – and let me start by saying that there are no prizes for guessing who the photo is of- -----it’s obviously me, and it was taken when I was about 3 years old! So why the photo? Well- Gary stated in his introduction, that the aim of this news letter is to try and help everyone keep better connected and more informed about what’s going on, in, and around our business, but equally its designed to try and provide a fun and informal format for getting to know our friends and colleagues here in dmg Middle East a little better. We also thought it would be fun if in future issues we had some mystery photos taken of people from when they were younger, we can then all try and guess who the photos are of. It therefore seemed only fitting that if I expect everyone else to get involved and play along in the future that I should ‘step up to the plate’ and share one of my childhood photos. So here it is! I hope you will all enjoy reading the articles contained in this month’s launch news letter and I also hope you will all take an active role in helping to contribute to forthcoming issues, helping to keep it fresh and fun! OK – so what can I tell about our business and what’s going on? Well, probably the most exciting thing to share and confirm with you all right now is that on the 29th April we will be holding our first ever ‘off-site’ conference for all our staff here in the Middle East. Details of the day, along with a full agenda will be circulated to everyone shortly – but the main objective of the conference is to take some time away from the day to day business so that we can all meet and chat about our future growth plans together. We also intend to end the day with an informal BBQ and take a moment to reflect and celebrate our successes over the last year. I hope the conference will give us an opportunity to share our plans for the future, talk about some of the changes taking place around us and how we need to develop in order to build the success we all seek- as well as listen and share new ideas and gain answers to any questions that I’m sure many of us have. We have a truly great business here in the Middle East overflowing with many talented people. Clearly we have a lot of change taking place around us, people leaving, people joining, new processes, new structures etc and whilst this activity is very natural in a growing and fast developing business and can be seen as uplifting and liberating, I also appreciate that when there is change, especially in a relatively short space of time, it can sometimes be a little unsettling, particularly if the vision and goals are not yet clear to everyone. Over the coming months, I want to ensure that we all share the same vision and feel better connected to our business going forward. The conference (along with this news letter) are the first of a number of small steps we are taking to enable us to achieve clearer communications. Like most journeys of note and value, it will probably take us a while to get to where we want to be (and it won’t magically happen overnight) – but we have a fantastic future ahead of us and we are off to a truly great start! I’m really looking forward to sharing more with you all on the 29th of April at the conference, and I would welcome any advance questions that you might have or would like me to address /answer at the conference– so please feel free to email me. I just want to end this brief note by extending a sincere thank you to Gary for championing this news letter and to all those who have helped design, shape and make this first edition happen. Ian

Q1. What is your job within DMG World Media Middle East? A cute Temporary Finance assistant and lovin’ it Q2. Who is your boss and what do you like most about your job? Well he is tall, dark ,handsome, intelligent, and easy to speak to but honestly I am afraid of him sometimes because he is bigger than me but all I can say he is a COOL BOSS. and of course I won’t forget my sweet, bubbly, pretty boss who is afraid of getting my cold and cough which I got from JODEY ahahha and from my experience with Lady bosses she is the BEST I have had.The thing I like most about my job is that in our FINANCE DEPARTMENT we are like a second family here and we are very comfortable with each other even though ALL of them have LOTS and LOTS OF THINGS TO DO especially we have time picking on SUNNY to have a BIG LAUGH. Q3. What single thing would make your job easier? – Sunny not picking on me all the time ahahha… Well every job has its hardship so I think to make your job easier is to make your upmost of it…Q4 Where do you live and do you have a family here? Q1. What is your job within DMG World Media Middle East?Vice President – so my role is to ensure the smooth operation of a number of events, such as the Big 5, Office, FM Expo and the Middle East Coatings Show. “Smooth operation” might be defined as working with the event teams, sales, marketing, operational, financial staff as well as third party contractors to ensure the revenue and contribution are met and that we are developing the products as successfully as possible, be that in new markets, launching brand extensions, or an array of added value aspects to visitors and exhibitors. It’s a very broad and exciting role and one that I enjoy a great deal.

Q2. Who is your boss and what do you like most about your job?Ian Stokes - and what I enjoy most about the role is to see teams come together, develop and excel at their objectives. As one person in the team I can deliver very little when you consider the size of the Big 5. However, when a team comes together and starts pulling together it is rewarding to see the results that can be achieved.

Q3. What single thing would make your job easier?Learning to type……. I’ve tried all sorts of teaching methods, booked myself onto courses and even tried the verbal typing software. At the end of the day, my hands are just too big…….As a serious note – PASSION – if a tram or business is passionate about what they do you can deliver the most fantastic results, and have fun doing just that..

Q4. Where do you live and do you have a family here?I have an apartment in the Greens, which means I understand all about traffic issues and patience in the morning. As for family, it’s

just me here in Dubai. I’m not married.

Q5 Where were you born and what are your spiritual beliefs?I was born on a farm in Staffordshire in England, one of the most beautiful counties in the Midlands. I

grew up on a farm and all of my formative years were spent in farming. You’d be surprised at the things I

can still do, like milk a cow and slaughter a sheep. So if you ever find yourself in need of such matters, you can

always call me.

Q6 What is your favorite animal and why?I’ve have to say any Labrador dog. I had to leave two Labs behind in the UK when I first moved to Canada five years ago and it was a long time before I stopped missing having them both around me.

They are such wonderful characters and a joy to have in your life. I’m sure at some

point in the future I’ll have them replaced with two more.

Q7 What are your passions/hobbies?

I have several passions outside of work; golf would have to sit at the top of the current list. No matter what I learn I never seem to have the game

beaten. Whilst at times it is the most frustrating game I’ve ever played it has taught me patience.

Other than golf, travel and trying to keep fit are other goals. Relaxation for me generally involves a playing or watching sport, or a movie………..

Simon MellorVice President, JLT Dubai Office

Q8 Favorite colour?Blue – always reminds me of the best in life – the blue ocean, the blue sky and blue eyes that Husky dogs have…….

Q9 What time did you go to bed last nightAround 1.00am, which is really late compared to my usual routine. I’m an early riser and don’t tend to stay up too late.

Q10 Who is your hero/heroine?Right now I think Obama. He has a major job on his hands and seems to be making all the right noises. In the past I would have looked to the likes of Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Bobby Robson, and a few other more personal memories. Business heroes are harder to identify, but the likes of Steve Jobs, Jack Welch and Richard Branson spring to mind.

Q11 Favorite MovieFar too many to mention, over the years I watched far too many. I thought Avatar was pretty clever and I’d see that again.

Q12 What star sign are you?Aries and I’m very true to type if you care to look up the details.

Q13 Favorite place in DubaiThe office of course…………….. silly question. After that I’d have to say the view out over the Marine towards the Palm, or the gardens at the One & Only Royal Mirage hotel. I’d have to include Al Maha, that’s a special place and one worth making the effort to go to if you ever have the chance.

Q14 Best holiday outside of DubaiI hope that I’ve not had that yet; I still have a few places on my list of locations I want to see. Past favorites have includes Rio in Brazil, The Rockies in Canada, the Scottish Highlands, and Cape Town in South Africa.

Q15 Which do you prefer, dressing up or down?I have to say, I’d far sooner dress up than dress down. You can’t beat a black tie evening…….. the beach is cool, but dressing up is always the anticipation of something special

Q16 What did you eat for dinner last night?Pasta…………….

Q17 What do you want to be when you grow up?A farmer……….. It’s in the blood for me, through the family connection on my father’s side. Although I’d settle for owning a golf club and mowing the grass all day.

Q18 What did your parents want you to be when you grew up!?My dad always suggested that my brother and I should be butchers. He always thought that they made all of the money out of the farmers. Funny thing is that my brother and I have a share in an abattoir which we opened over the Christmas period. So we both got there one way or another.

Q19 Favorite meal?A roast of some sort, not too fussed as to the meat, but it needs to be accompanied by roasted vegetables and greens with stuffing and gravy, a nice glass of red wine always adds to the process.I enjoy cooking; I find it pretty relaxing after a day at the office or in meetings. Whilst I would not describe my roasts as the best, I can hold my own.

Q20 What do you like most about yourself?Very fond of my right ear. I have no idea. I do know that one of greatest pleasures I have is seeing a team click into place and starting to enjoy the results of their hard work. That’s pretty special and if I can do more of that, I’ll like that aspect of my personality.

OIL BARONS BALLHELP FOCP KIDSHAVE FUN!

Page 7: The dmg lowdown

The Arabian Centre’s Fun City throws its doors open for poorly children

CHILDREN with cancer were given the chance to forget their worries for a while, at Fun City in Mirdif’s Arabia Centre on Thursday, thanks to Sharjah-based charity Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) and representatives of the Oil Barons’ Ball – which is organised every year by DMG’s Reflex Publishing. The five children’s play time– an indoor playground with a variety of rides, games and attractions - was donated by Fun City. Organiser of the annual fund–raising Ball, Eileen Michael, Managing Director of Reflex Publishing, a DMG World Media company, said: “The Oil Barons’ Ball raises a great deal of money for FOCP. For some companies, that might be enough, but our commitment to the charity, its aims and goals continues throughout the year. “These kids don’t have much chance of fun, so we wanted to hold a little party for them, in the hope of cheering them up and giving their parents and carers a well-earned break, too.” FOCP, which became the event’s official charity in 2008, provides moral, financial and practical support to cancer sufferers and their families. The charity was founded under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed AI Qasimi, President of the Family Supreme Council, and wife of the Ruler of Sharjah & Federal Supreme Council Member H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi.

Charlie Sinclair, the 2009 Oil Baron, attended the special party. Underlining the generosity of this exclusive club, former Oil Baron John Allison couldn’t attend, but donated money to pay for presents for the children. The 2009 ball – held at Dubai Media City’s amphitheatre – raised a staggering AED 500,000 for Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP). The money has already helped grant several wishes in the UAE - with a car, laptops, rent money, school fees and game consoles being given to some of the charity’s young beneficiaries. Eileen Michael continued: “The look on the children’s faces today makes us all appreciate how worthwhile our fundraising efforts are, and should give us all a lot more fire in our bellies to try and raise even more at this year’s Ball.” Dr. Sawsan Al Madhi, Secretary General of the Friends Of Cancer Patients, said: “The Oil Barons’ Ball has been the major source of income for FOCP and without this money raised, we simply would not have been able to help these children. “At FOCP, we can concentrate more on promoting understanding of this disease which affects so many of us, and help the work to find a cure, and to develop coping strategies, because kind and generous people like Fun City, Eileen and the Oil Barons take the time out to help us and the children.” The plucky kids that enjoyed time at Fun City were Mustafa, Maysa, Marwar, Abdulah and Zahrah.

The idea for a celebratory Big 5 day out was formed over lunch with the team in September, just two months pre-show. At the time the team had gathered to celebrate the fact that Big 5 had generated more than $20 million dollars for the first

time in the show’s history. We had wanted to celebrate that landmark and reward the team with a lunch. At that stage we’d exceed the budget and had wanted to set a new goal for the rest of the selling cycle. We knew from research within DMG that Big 5 was the third largest revenue generator in the B2B sector. We also knew that the second largest product generated just over $21 million, namely the spring edition of the New York Gift Fair. We agreed that if we could compete with that target I’d agree to fund a ‘rock star’ day out for the team. At the time, I had no idea what that day out might involve, but we all agreed it sounded like it might be fun to try. The team to their credit responded and delivered the revenues, in total over $21.5 million, and did indeed hit the level of the second largest revenue generator. We, or should I say I, now had to devise a plan for the team. I didn’t want the team to know what I was planning, the surprise seemed half of the fun, so I couldn’t talk to Nicci. Majella kindly agreed to help me with the planning, and so we devised a day out that involved limousines, planes and speed boats, all the trappings of a rock star life in Dubai. We started with a stretch limousine from the office for all fourteen members of the team. Samer, attired in white for the day, helped marshal the team into the Hummer for the 20 minute ride to Jebel Ali port. At the port the Seawings teams greeted the team and split us into two seaplanes for the flight over Dubai. The day was windy and the flight was bumpy, not all of the team managed to keep their breakfast down, no names……..Paula. The views over Business Bay, the Burj Khalifa and the Palm Island were truly impressive and will I’m sure remain in their minds for many years. Dubai is a great city to see from the sky, it really

brings home the expansive development that has taken place here in recent years. Returning to the Jebel Ali port by plane, we boarded the limousine once more and headed to the Dubai Yacht Club. Awaiting the team was a 50 foot yacht, with crew to whisk them out into the ocean. An impressive lunch was served on deck whilst we cruised for an

hour through the marina before dropping anchor off the Palm. Samer, by now in his third outfit of the day, stripped off and demonstrated an impressive swallow dive from the upper deck, which sadly we didn’t capture on film. Whilst the weather might have been warmer, it proved to be a relaxing, fun filled day. After a hard year of work and having more than delivered the targets set for them, the team deserved the reward and we were more than happy to provide them with the rock star lifestyle, if only for a few hours. As a final note, it provided them with the opportunity to say farewell to Dimple, who was leaving the team after nine years with Big 5, to head back to Mumbai and start her new life with her husband. We wish her well with her wedding plans, she’ll be missed by all.

“An, amazing life experience speaking of the sea plane, the limo and the boat; air land and sea all the way!”

“A spectacular way to experience Dubai. It was an unforgettable, enjoyable experience with exceptional colleagues.”

“It was a once in a lifetime experience. Grand style, Good memories and Great fun!”

Cultural Corner:For most of us who have been living in Dubai for some time or for the newly arrived, making time to learn the local language can prove daunting. Here are a few simple Arabic words and phrases which might at the least cause an appreciative smile even if your pronunciation is lousy. Be brave! Our hosts will be suitably impressed that at least you have tried!

DID YOU KNOW?This ancient form of poetry is called Nabati, also known as Bedouin poetry. It is a rich form of literature slightly removed from classical Arabic.

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is a renowned poet and patron of numerous poetry competitions. The Palm , Jebel Ali has water-side-homes built on stilts which (when viewed from the air) will spell out the following verse as written by Sheikh Mohammed.

“ Take wisdom from the wise, not everyone who rides a horse is a jockey. It takes a man of vision to write on water, great men rise to great challenges.”

Simon Mellor and the Gary Robinsons both attended “Burns” Night held at the Emirates Golf Club. For those of you who have never heard of him, Robert

Burns was a famous Scottish Poet (also known as Rabbie Burns, Scotland’s favourite son, the Ploughman Poet, the Bard of Ayrshire and in Scotland as simply The Bard) , lyricist and known womaniser. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, and is celebrated worldwide.

Every year (usually on or around January 25th) Scottish men don kilts and along with their partners (in this case none, how sad is that!) attend to a sit down meal formal dinner of Haggis (a dish containing sheep’s ‘pluck’ (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally simmered in the animal’s stomach for approximately three hours, and usually washed down with a few glasses or “Drams” of whiskey.

The evening was shared with Peter Sutton and his wife Rachel, and Mike Watton both of DWTC. It was reported that this was the first time that Simon had worn and kilt and he was heard commenting “Its quite liberating isn’t it! Referring to the fact that when you wear a Kilt is its traditional NOT to wear anything under it!! All good clean fun even though we nearly fell asleep during the speeches!

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I; And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun; And I will luve thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare-thee-weel, my only Luve! And fare-thee-weel, a while! And I will come again, my Luve, Tho’ ‘twere ten thousand mile!

Since my brief time in the Middle East, I was surprised at how much of a ‘work hard, play hard’ society this is.

With the hours we all work, the company expanding, faces changing and even new businesses being acquired, the ‘playing’ part could be in danger of being forgotten! Enter the dmg Sports & Social Club! With the first event details now officially released, this is only the first step towards a series of regular events and activities together. Some will be big, some will be smaller, and whilst we iron out the few remaining creases, we will be happy to share a calendar of events with you shortly.

We have received fantastic feedback from dmg staff ranging from circus training to sky-diving, and hope that suggestions will continue coming in. I’m sure that nearly all of you are on Facebook and we will have a page where the events can be accessed, discussed and the embarrassing photos can be uploaded!

I hope to see you all on Thursday 25th March for the desert safari and until next time - watch this space!

Getting there:When I called and asked for the easiest way to get to the venue from Ibn Battuta Mall, I was told to walk a short distance under the arch, past the service station, turn left at the main junction, go through the truck stop and walk up a short path to the main entrance. Bear in mind this was around 7pm and dark. My companion for the evening and I were still “suited and booted” and were ill prepared for what lay ahead of us. Obediently, we proceeded along the main route from the mall, passed under the arch, walked past the service station where we ran out of pavement, joined the cars on the inside lane and eventually found our way to the truck stop which loomed to our left. In spite of the lack of signage, we found our way to an opening in the corner of a wall which had a security guard manning a rickety old desk. He helpfully pointed us to an unlit path (pot-holed road) which took us another five minutes of car dodging to negotiate before finally arriving at the entrance. I would suggest a taxi to anyone wishing to venture here.

Venue and Ambience:The venue is essentially a sports club and as you arrive there is a lovely smell of cut grass and the gentle hiss of sprinklers. There is an outdoor area for al-fresco dining should you choose to brave the insects which seemed to be out in force. After passing under the hooded gaze of the disinterested security guard, we proceeded up a long passage which smelt a lot like old socks, sweat and beer and into the bar/restaurant area. Nothing could have prepared us for the fog of tobacco smoke curling lazily around the occupants and the working man’s English seaside pub feel of the place. We made our way to the bar which was being propped up by a motley crew of Saudi business men drinking pints like water and a selection of ladies of ill repute. We were more than pleasantly surprised to get change

from 50AED for two pints of amber nectar and proceeded to one of the grubby booths for our meal. Meal and Service:As it was a boy’s night out, we decided to have the predictable curry and to be honest, when the poppadoms arrived they almost seemed unnecessary as there were enough bits of poppadom left over from former occupants of our booth. They were delicious though and the waiter was attentive and friendly when he took our order. My companion settled for a chicken curry with extra chilli and I had a vegetable curry with the same and some naan to round it off. The menu is standard pub fair and were not expecting anything too exciting other than a possibly a spot of Delhi Belly the following morning. When the meal arrived, we were more than surprised at the generous portions and the gigantic chilli laid across the top of each platter in the form of “extra chilli”. The spices were well balanced and the heat never overpowered the flavor but as a non smoker, even the cutlery had a vague smoky taste. Our ever attentive waiter kept our drinks well topped up and I am not sure what was more filling in the end, the meal or the pints, but our appetites were more than well sated so a sweet was out of the question. Who it appeals to:This is more of a boy’s night out type venue even though there were a few families eating outdoors. There are plenty of sport screens and if you like your beer in a pint glass you need look no further. Value for money rating: I would give this venue an 8/10 for value for money and service.
