The Diamond Sutra
The Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra
(Diamond Sutra) is an early Mahayana
“Perfection of Wisdom” text written in the
first few centuries of the Common Era and
contains important teachings on emptiness,
no-self, non-attachment, impermanence,
and enlightenment. Translated into Chinese
in 401 CE, it is one of the most influential
works in the Zen tradition.
The Seminar
Join us for a weekend of study and practice
as we explore the principal themes of the
Diamond Sutra in light of the teachings of
Tathāgatha Zen. Alternating sessions of lec-
ture, discussion, and formal Rinzai Zen prac-
tice will facilitate extending this insight into
our daily lives. Formal practice comprises
seated meditation, walking, chanting, and
silent meals.
Presenters
The workshop will be facilitated by two ex-
traordinary scholars who are also Rinzai Zen
practitioners, each with decades of dedicat-
ed practice, and assisted by the Abbot and
staff of Charles River Zen.

Victor Sōgen Hori, Ph.D. re-
ceived his Doctorate in Phi-
losophy from Stanford Uni-
versity in 1976 and was or-

Daitoku-ji Monastery in Kyōto
in the same year. He devoted the next thir-

in Japan before returning to North America.
Sōgen is on the faculty of McGill University
as an Associate Professor of Japanese Reli-
gions in the Faculty of Religious Studies. He
is the author of three books, including Zen

Are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow
Like dew and like lightning
Thus they should be perceived”
