The Diamond Sutra

The Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra

(Diamond Sutra) is an early Mahayana

“Perfection of Wisdom” text written in the

first few centuries of the Common Era and

contains important teachings on emptiness,

no-self, non-attachment, impermanence,

and enlightenment. Translated into Chinese

in 401 CE, it is one of the most influential

works in the Zen tradition.

The Seminar

Join us for a weekend of study and practice

as we explore the principal themes of the

Diamond Sutra in light of the teachings of

Tathāgatha Zen. Alternating sessions of lec-

ture, discussion, and formal Rinzai Zen prac-

tice will facilitate extending this insight into

our daily lives. Formal practice comprises

seated meditation, walking, chanting, and

silent meals.

Presenters

The workshop will be facilitated by two ex-

traordinary scholars who are also Rinzai Zen

practitioners, each with decades of dedicat-

ed practice, and assisted by the Abbot and

staff of Charles River Zen.

Kendo Harold Roth, Ph.D. be-

gan practicing Rinzai Zen with

Jōshū Sasaki Rōshi in 1969

and was ordained a Zen monk

in 1987. Kendo is a Professor

of Religious Studies at Brown

University and the Director of the Contem-

plative Studies Program the first of its kind

in North America. He is the author of six

books, including Original Tao: 'Inward Train-

ing' and the Origins of Taoist Mysticism, and

the editor of About Tathagatha Zen, by

Kyozan Jōshū Sasaki Rōshi.

Victor Sōgen Hori, Ph.D. re-

ceived his Doctorate in Phi-

losophy from Stanford Uni-

versity in 1976 and was or-

dained a Rinzai Zen monk at

Daitoku-ji Monastery in Kyōto

in the same year. He devoted the next thir-

teen years to training in Rinzai monasteries

in Japan before returning to North America.

Sōgen is on the faculty of McGill University

as an Associate Professor of Japanese Reli-

gions in the Faculty of Religious Studies. He

is the author of three books, including Zen

Sand: The Book of Capping Phrases for Kōan

Practice.

Dokurō Roland Jaeckel, Oshō

has been studying Rinzai Zen

since the early 80s and was or-

dained a Zen monk by Jōshū

Sasaki Rōshi in 1989. He be-

came an Oshō in 2004 and es-

tablished Charles River Zen. Dokurō serves

as a Buddhist Chaplain at Harvard University.
