Introduce team speakersTalk about DGS role as Main Liaison with UDGS for Mapping in Federal Government. We have strong partnership with State, County, and Local entities through the DE GIS Community. This works is DE!Lets face it were SMALL! Get criticized for being about the size of other states largest counties! Maybe this shows that the way to accomplish this type of task is county by county?Late 80s we have SMAC direction of new statewide topo mapping effort-new maps from the ground up with 5 foot contours, and a few 10s. Great partnership with USGS and sought collection of all DEs topo layers as DLG layers. DE is the only state to have Misc. Features (structures) collected in this manner. Lucky coincidence. GIS was becoming popular in the early 90s, SMAC had the foresight to move the new maps in this direction! The DataMIL team was serendipity! Everyone one involved or who became involved was in the right place at the right time with the right skills and the opportunity and drive. The change began with the creation of the DGDC and revitalization of the SMAC. Then came NSGIC Annual Meeting, Sep 2000, Lake Tahoe. I started a discussion with Bill Harris, Rolla, MO USGS Mid-Continent Mapping Center. You know, Delaware has up-to-date, 1:12k trans centerline files and new Municipal Boundary files that you need to update our topo mapsIf we give you that data, can you update our DLGs and then our paper maps?Good Ideas..more discussions..how does USGS ingest DEs data?..more discussions..OK why do we need to reprint the paper maps, lets just update the digital data and print the maps from the digital layers! And whats more, if we each keep our respective digital layers up-to-date, then the maps we make from them will always be the most up-to-date!..more discussionsDATAMIL!It just so happened, September 2000 the USGS put together a committee to begin fleshing out the USGS National Map. Well guess what, They came to the same conclusions-hence the DataMIL being a National Map Pilot Project. Cant say enough about the DataMIL team and those associated with the project. USGS and ESRI have been a tremendous help and our technical support staff at the University of Delaware (ack John, Tina, and Dick) have been indispensable. Mike and I would still be dreaming!Partnerships have really been the key to success. Past ones (DGS-USGS) present ones (State, DE GIS Community, USGS, ESRI, UD RDMS) and the future ones will continue to play a very important role (Data Stewards, MPO staff)We need to get the MPO established in DE preferably at the UD.We need to get through the Ugly Duckling PhaseBringing in of the Cadastral Layers will force realignment to more accurate connectivity for all the Framework Layers.Establish regular maintenanceAdd more sub frameworklayers
