Cinematography in the Decent

Close UpThis scene shows a close up of the cake of what Sarah’s daughter is holding as she is dead Sarah is trying to get to terms with the death of her family so having a mid shot. The close up of the daughter is of the torso where she is holding a cake which has her name on it. This establishes that the daughter is dead and Sarah is not yet ready to not remember it.

Close UpThis is the close up shot. Which is where the camera only shows the top of the shoulders of Sarah. There is also a tilt shot because the camera is looking down onto the character to that also makes here seem like she is weak and makes the audience looks like they have a god feeling in this scene.

Tilt/Mid shotThis scene shows a mid shot of Sarah but it is angled above her to make her seem small and the viewer a god-like feeling by looking down onto her in a mid shot which shows the top of the head to the waist. This would be achieved by the camera being on jib or a tripod as they can be tilted to look down on a position. This works as Sarah is just waking up from the coma and realises what has happened to her.

Wide ShotThis is a wide shot which establishes the scene of the move and also shows Sarah in a corridor which shows the scenery, which also shows that she is isolated in a place where nobody can help her.

Trombone shotThis is a Trombone shot, this happens when the camera physically moves in and then the camera lens zooms away. This shows that the camera is showing that she is scared, but the trombone shot stays in the mid-shot all the way throughout the whole scene to show expression on Sarah’s face to show the fear that the darkness is coming for her at that moment.

SteadicamThis is a steadicam shot. Tis happens when a camera instructor is who has a camera attached by a mechanical harness and the camera sits on the arm. This can give the fast moving scene look more steady. This is similar to the tracking shot, they don’t use tracks as the track will be visible as Sarah runs down the corridor. This also stays in a wide shot throughout the scene.

Arc ShotThis is an arc shot which happens when the camera is on a dolly and tracks which mostly goes in a full 360 degrees around the characters. This give a sense of realization in the the scene to know that there is nothing left to do to help Sarah.
