The Origin of Sierra Leone• Sierra Leone, a small country on the

west coast of Africa, was visited by a Portuguese explorer in 1462 who gave the country its portuguese name, “Sierra Leoa” which means “Lion Mountains”.

• Later on, the British came to the country and officially adopted the name as Sierra Leone in 1787.

• Different tribes started to settle down here, such as Sherbro, Limba, Kono, and Mende.

• All these different backgrounds coming together resulted to more than 16 different types of ethnic groups: Yalunka. Soso, Fula, Vai, Kissi, Bullom, Krim, Koranko, Madingo, Loko etc. The largest populated ethnic group are the Mende and Temne.

The Origin of Nigeria• A British colonial adventurer and

empire builder, Lord Fredrick Lugard, was on the search for markets, raw materials and wanted to spread political influence overseas.

• So he, along with his British soldiers journeyed to distant places and came across Nigeria on October 1st, 1960. The name Nigeria was derived from the country geographically above it, Niger - the name of the river that constitutes the most remarkable geographical feature in Africa.

• Different tribes, such as the Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa-Fulani, and Benin, began to settle and populate the country until over 300 different languages became the foundation of the 36 states of Nigeria.
