Members of The Coppice Academy’s Singsation Choir took part in a
fundraising Christmas Carols event at The INTU Potteries Shopping
Centre last Friday. The choir had been rehearsing the popular festive
tracks such as “I Wish it Could be Christmas Everyday”, “Merry Christ-
mas Everyone”, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “Jingle Bells” among
many others to bring some upbeat festive cheer to the shoppers in the
market place. They certainly drew a crowd of bopping admirers to their
performance as the morning progressed. The students and staff put on
a great performance and raised over £80.

Friday Enrichment- During Friday afternoon’s
Enrichment sessions, Miss Oakley and Mr Goodman
have taken the students out to a number of venues on
the Magical Mystery Tour. The Enrichment sessions
are a reward for all of the hard work of the students
throughout the week and so we have sought to make
these visits really memorable. So far this term we
have had a wonderful visit to Newcastle Fire Station
where the students were able to use the water hoses
and explore the emergency vehicles and try on
equipment. We also visited The Potteries Museum and
saw, close up, the Spitfire as well as many other
exhibits of local history. The students really enjoyed the wildlife section and the
interactive activities. More recently we have visited Glebe Farm and the students
were able to pet the animals and feed the rather greedy Llama’s, some students
were afraid of losing their fingers but overcame their fears to offer a tasty carrot
to the goofy toothed creatures with whacky hair.

Coppice gets GOLD! We were very proud to announce that The Coppice Academy gained a GOLD award in
this years “Heart of England in Bloom” competition.
Schools across the Midlands entered this prestigious gar-
dening competition and we were judged in the Summer
term.
Donna from Heart of England came to school to present
the students with their GOLD award. Well done everyone.
We are very excited about next years’ entry and with this
in mind we would welcome any garden ornaments that you may want to donate.
Following on from the success of the Britain in
Bloom and Heart of England competitions KS4 mix
are broadening their gardening horizons and helping
to keep local gardens and parks neat and tidy.
A big thank you to Newcastle Borough Council for
their continuing support.
Focus on Maths: Class 8/9-3
have been using their maths
skills whilst shopping for
breakfast club and visiting
the cafe– handling money,
recognising and totalling up
the correct coins.
Focus on English: This half
term Year 7 and 8/9.1 have
worked enthusiastically on
their non-fiction, advertising
project. They have created
their own product, produced
adverts and have written an
advertising pitch, using per-
suasive techniques in order to
appeal to their target market.
Their products were on sale at
the Christmas Fair.

Recognising Achievement at The Coppice In November we invited students from last year’s KS4 to attend our awards evening
celebrating the wide range of accreditation they gained last summer.

tory speech . We also gave out subject awards recognising hard work and achieve-
ments from across the school to the following students:
We also had class awards from The Rotary Club , Newcastle presented by Mr

of the academy.

Leaving us.......
We will be saying goodbye to some colleagues this Christmas.
Guy Booth our music therapist has been working with our stu-
dents for a year now. He has made a big impact in a short
time. We will miss him and wish him well with his next place-
ment.
Jane Gardiner has been teaching English at the Coppice as
part of her teaching experience. She is continuing at Black-
friars Academy– all the best, Jane!
Stacey Oakley has been our amazing acting vice principal
this term. We have enjoyed having her with us and are sad
to see her return to Blackfriars FE but know we will see her
lots especially during transition visits.
Clare Taylor recently left the Coppice after 7 years as TA.
She will be missed and we wish her all the success in the fu-
ture.
Matt Morrell is taking time off to look after his new daughter and will be back in
the Summer term.
Rebecca Meakin has been a TA here for almost 10 years working in several differ-
ent classes and being involved in many whole school activities. She is about to start
her maternity leave—good luck and best wishes.
Our caretaker Dave Mansell has been coming to the Coppice at dawn, in the snow ,
ice and hurricanes ( and English drizzle ) for over 15 years . He is easing into retire-
ment and we are sure that he will continue to be a friend of the Coppice for years
to come!
