SBS TV recently showed a sumptuous drama series called The Young Pope. An American (Jude Law) was elected as Pope, head of the world’s Roman Catholics. This Pope proved to be totally different to his predecessors and tried to save the flagging Church by ‘tightening the ship’; he introduced stricter attitudes on various moral issues, and also no longer wanted the Pope to be an international celebrity. He reinstated rituals and ceremonies which had been abandoned sixty years ago, and in one astonishing scene put on the ‘triple tiara crown’ and was carried on a throne into a meeting with his Cardinals. The shocked Cardinals were then required to kiss his foot as a sign of their obedience and humility. The series continued with various romantic and political intrigues within the Vatican, and ended rather inconclusively, not really showing whether the Young Pope’s ultra-conservatism had worked or not. Apparently a second series is currently being made, maybe this will deal with this subject. We shall have to wait and see!

The Anglican Diocese of Perth is currently engaged in the process of electing a new archbishop, and whilst the process might lack the glamour and international significance of the election of a Pope, it is very important for the local Church. At All Saints’ College we might feel we are a step removed from the Diocese and Archbishop, but we are still a part of the system. Each year the College produces a report to Synod, the Diocese’s governing body, and the Archbishop is officially the ‘Visitor’ to the College. This means, for example, that he/she could be brought in to deal with a major issue, such as an irreconcilable stalemate in the College Board. The appointment of the Archbishop is made by a Synod committee formed of clergy and lay-people from the Diocese, and hopefully a suitable candidate will be found before too long.

There are some people who would like to see a conservative appointed, who, like The Young Pope, would take a firm line on issues facing the modern Church. Others would hope for a liberal thinker who could help create an appropriate church for the modern age. Some would prefer an archbishop who is a scholar, an academic, a teacher. Others are looking for a person of spiritual strength, with expert pastoral ability, and yet others for somebody with good political acumen who could navigate the Church through the minefield of legal issues which currently beset it. this even further there is the matter of attempting to discern if the person appointed is the one whom God really wants in that ministry. There is no doubt that the Archbishop needs to meet so many people’s criteria – so how ever could such a person even exist, let alone be found!

Our thoughts and our prayers need to be with all those who are involved in the process of election, so that our Diocese might have a leader who will be able to tackle energetically and in God’s way the relationship of Church with society in the modern age.

All SAINTS’ EMERGENCY FOOD HAMPERS

One of the most exciting and encouraging expressions of the partnership between the Bull Creek – Leeming Anglican Parish and All Saints’ College has to be the Emergency Food Hampers.

Providing practical assistance to those who are most vulnerable lies at the very heart of Christian mission, for Jesus taught that whenever we give a glass of water to someone in need, we are in fact caring for him. This hamper ministry has been operating for over 16 years, but it is only in recent years that the church has invited the College to become involved. College students are invited to participate through the Service Learning Program by collecting food for the hampers and also helping pack the hamper bags each week. This support is greatly appreciated by the parish, as it has allowed this ministry to grow and reach more people. However, there is one extra way students and their families can gain a more personal understanding of poverty in our society, and that is by volunteering to help deliver the food on a Saturday afternoon.

This Emergency Food Program is unique in two ways: 1. there is no other outlet for emergency food offered in the Perth metropolitan area, 2. we deliver the hampers to the homes of the recipients. This entails two teams of two people who drive their own vehicles around to deliver the food. Whilst this could sound onerous, in fact it offers every volunteer a very personal understanding of the kinds of needs that exist in our society, from which many of us are quite insulated. I remember the first time I took my 23-year-old son to do deliveries, and he commented on the impact it made on him and how it helped him have a greater compassion for those who didn’t share his privilege. Our hamper program is supplying basic food on a weekend to needy families in more than 65 suburbs in the south-east region of Perth.

In the parish financial year to 30 April 2017 we delivered 850 hampers (average of 17 per week) assisting 1775 adults and 1575 children. In the last few years we have seen a 2-3% increase each year.

I would like to encourage you to consider volunteering to participate in the delivery team on a Saturday, I am sure it will enrich your experience of our common life. If you are interested please contact Ms Natasha Saunders, Acting Head of Service Learning: [email protected]

RED SHIElD APPEAl

Wednesday, 17 May saw the launch of the Red Shield Appeal with an annual breakfast, this year held at The State Function Centre at Fraser’s Restaurant in King’s Park. Service Captains, vani Srivastava and Dharani MacDonald, were the invited guests of State School Coordinator Mr Reynolds, and joined Hale School, Prendiville Catholic College and St Mark’s Anglican Community School to celebrate the launch. The students joined approximately 300 other guests at the event, including Her Excellency, The Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC, Governor of Western Australia, Hon. Simone McGurk MlA and Major Neil venables, Divisional Commander from the Western Australian Division of The Salvation Army.

As well as being treated to a delicious breakfast and amazing views of the city as the sun rose, the students also listened to speeches presented by a range of Western Australia’s leaders. Frightening facts, such as that WA is only second to the Northern Territory in documented domestic abuse cases and that domestic abuse is the top cause for homelessness in women, were delivered and strengthened the students’ resolve to impart the message of the crucial need of the support of the Red Shield Appeal to their fellow students on their return to the College.

The Red Shield Appeal has been proudly supported by the College since All Saints’ foundation in 1981. The appointment of Mrs Christine Kroeger to Murdoch Head of House saw Murdoch adopt the cause and the event has grown from strength to strength, with 2016 being the most successful in history when $4 129 was raised in only three hours of door knocking! This year the event will take place on Sunday, 28 May and we appeal for all students from Years 7–12 to donate just one day of their lives to take part in this very worthwhile cause. Permission slips can be obtained from Mrs Kay von Dietze: [email protected], who has for many years put an enormous effort into the meticulous planning of the event. We hope that our students will yet again see that we are capable of making a difference to the lives of those who need it most.

REREGISTRATION

Non-government schools in Western Australia undergo a process of reregistration every few years. The Minister for Education, through the Department of Education Services (DES), requires schools to provide evidence that they are operating at a required standard. The process provides the opportunity for the Minister to implement changes in structures, policies or processes that he/she wishes, across schools in WA. The process of reregistration is a very worthwhile one, as it gives confidence to the school, its students and community that it is operating at a required (high) standard and is also at the forefront of best practice in schools when measured against the Minister’s guidelines. Our process will conclude by the end of this term.

The 2017 Registration Standards have notably been influenced by The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. A new standard, Standard 12 ‘Child abuse prevention’, has been added and the College has responded in a number of ways to ensure that we are considered a ‘child safe school’.

Among actions included in our response are:

• A Staff Code of Conduct was created and all staff received an induction to the Code and to a document created by the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA) called ‘Teacher-Student Professional Boundaries – A Resource for WA Schools’

• The College’s Student Protection Policy was updated to reflect procedures, practices and strategies for the prevention of grooming and child abuse

• All College staff were given professional learning about child abuse. The video about child abuse available at the following address was used as a key resource: https://www.protectivebehaviourswa.org.au/

• Teachers and school nurses are considered ‘Mandatory Reporters’ of child abuse. Staff have received training in their responsibilities under this requirement

• The College has adopted guidelines from Child Safe Organisations WA to ensure that we are a child safe school

• The ‘Keeping Safe’ curriculum has been introduced in the Junior and Senior Schools. This curriculum focuses on protective behaviours

• Staff duty statements now include the following statement, which also sits on the front page of the College’s website: All Saints’ College prioritises the safety, welfare and wellbeing of children and young people, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment

• Staff recruitment practices have been altered to better detect and deflect anyone who may wish to work in a school to gain access to young people

Our community can be assured that at All Saints’ College the safety of our students is paramount. Acting Vice-Principal Mr Steven Davies is very happy to talk through any of these actions. If you wish to make contact with him please email: [email protected]

HElPING TO KEEP OuR YOuNG PEOPlE SAFE

All Saints’ College recognises the importance to our students of a connected community and is therefore proud of our Djaaliny program that is about the flame, the spark, the fire that kindles supportive partnerships and lifelong learning. However, we are always looking at other opportunities to engage our community in lifelong learning opportunities and to support our students, parents and staff that arise in the wider community.

Recently, we have been invited to inform our community about a parent information session run by SDERA (School Drug Education and Road Aware). SDERA are a well-respected provider of high-quality information aimed at helping children and young people make smarter choices by providing a resilience approach to road safety and to alcohol and other drugs education. SDERA also partners the College in the Keys for Life program, from which many of our students benefit.

This session is presented free of charge and provides information to parents and carers on the role that they can play, alongside the College, in drug education, ways to discuss the issue with their children and where to seek additional help. If you are interested in this opportunity, please click HERE for further information.

Given our continuing revision of College policy, I would also like to take this opportunity to invite parents to view our recently updated College Drug and Alcohol Policy. This policy outlines All Saints’ commitment to drug and alcohol education and to a learning environment for all students that is free of prohibited, non-medical drugs and the misuse of prescription drugs. Drug use is a complex issue and the College recognises that its role in the prevention of drug use requires a comprehensive approach.

Some of the key elements of the All Saints’ policy is based on a three-point strategy comprising Education, Discipline/Rehabilitation and Communication/Promotion.

Our efforts to educate our community include invitations to such opportunities as the one presented by SDERA, as well as a comprehensive program through health education and the invitation to parents and students to listen to guest speakers with particular expertise who visit the College as a part of our Djaaliny program.

However, where students are found to possess, distribute or consume alcoholic beverages, solvents or other prohibited drugs while in the care of the College, in College uniform or at College events, they will be expected and encouraged to take responsibility for their actions, in addition to the detrimental effects of their actions to the College community. In particular, students found to be in possession of drugs at any of these times face exclusion from the College, and if drugs and/or associated items are located, the College will immediately notify the police. The College has no tolerance for members of the community found to be selling or supplying drugs or alcohol at the College, in uniform or at a College event.

Please click HERE to view the College Policy which will also shortly be available on the College Portal.

We commend the SDERA parent session to all parents and guardians of students at our College as we work together to keep our students safe.

TECHNOlOGY DEvElOPMENT

For many people the pace of technology development is both terrifying and exhilarating – terrifying insofar as how quickly cutting-edge technology becomes obsolete, and exhilarating from the point of view of seeing what will come next.

Looking back just a few years, ZIP disks and CRT TVs in the classroom with DVD players attached were the latest and greatest. Who would have predicted 10 years ago that students would be accessing curriculum wirelessly from smartphones or any device from anywhere at any time with 128GB SD cards the size of a postage stamp, or that CD drives would be a thing of the past? The big questions is, what might the next 10 years look like? Technology will be the great enabler of more personalised learning, with systems designed to help students master skills that match their goals. Learning technologies will help us calculate everything we can about how a student learns and thrives, then create flexibility in the system to adapt and fine-tune what is delivered to that student and support teachers in their essential role.

We will never lose the need for the social structure that a great school like All Saints’ College provides, but the role of teachers and the influence of technology in education, as with every other part of our lives, will continually evolve and develop. It is a most exciting time to be an educator and a student!

In a recent talk to staff, Dr Richard Chambers, a renowned expert in mindfulness, spoke of some simple ideas to assist us in our productivity when using technology. He spoke of the myth of multi-tasking and the fact that what we are doing when we are watching TV, reading an email, doing our homework and talking to a friend on the phone AT THE SAME TIME is really attention-switching which reduces our overall productivity. His tips included:

• Have only one device/app open at a time• Turn off notifications• use website blockers (e.g. Cold Turkey)• Batch check email and Facebook – have certain times when you check, leave them closed at other times• Keep devices out of bedrooms – blue light from screens actually disrupts our sleep patterns• unplug 30 minutes before bed

Discuss these ideas with your son/daughter, they may even help your productivity!

The Arts

Once again our College community has been given the opportunity to display its artistic talent through the Still Connected Art Exhibition. As you read this edition of The College Courier, artistic students, parents, grandparents and wider community members are busy preparing their canvasses in readiness for the exhibition opening which will take place in the CPA on the evening of Friday, 16 June.

While some are being creative with their hands the cast of the annual College Production, Animal Farm, are physically transforming themselves into a representation of farm beasts with not a single prosthetic snout or trotter in sight!

2017 CHAMPION SCHOOlS CROSS COuNTRY

On Friday, 19 May 2017, 50 Cross Country runners represented All Saints’ College at the Champion Schools Cross Country meet at McGillivray Reserve. This event is used as a qualifier to select the top runners from WA in each age group for the Australian National Cross Country competition which is held later in the year.

Despite the challenging wet and windy conditions, this year we produced some great results, demonstrating a high level of effort and determination against some very fierce competitors. Please see some of our top competitors’ places below (table order based on the race schedule). All results can be found on the School Sport WA website.

Congratulations to our 17-year-old girls, Jizelle Kenworthy-Groen, Astrid Johnson and Rachel Yovich, who finished 2nd overall in their category.

We would also like to thank all parents for their support on the day and at training.

The day was a great experience for all runners, especially the 13- and 14-year-old competitors, to gain some valuable experience and knowledge about competitive level Cross Country running. We look forward to the ACC Cross Country Carnival on Thursday, 1 June.

2017 lIGHTNING CARNIvAlS

In Week 4 of Term 2, the Year 7 and 8 cohorts participated in the Associated and Catholic Colleges Lightning Carnival events. Students were able to nominate for a variety of sports, including Rugby, Football, Hockey, Soccer, Touch Rugby, Frisbee and Netball. Furthermore, Year 10 students were encouraged to coach and umpire our junior students, providing them with a great opportunity to develop their interpersonal, communication and leadership skills, as well as enjoying the physical activities. All students demonstrated exemplary behaviour and were fine ambassadors for the College.

As mentioned in my earlier email to Junior School families, please note information below regarding booking Three-Way Interviews which take place on Tuesday, 18 July 2017.

ONlINE BOOKING SYSTEM FOR THE THREE-WAY INTERvIEWS

We are trialling the use of an online booking system in which you, the parent, can login to SEQTA and schedule a Three-Way Interview time with your child’s class teacher.

Please note: The booking system will not be available until early in June, when a letter detailing instructions on how to log in and schedule these interviews for Kindergarten – Year 6 will be sent to you.

We look forward to using this system that has been used successfully in the Senior School and hope you find it user-friendly and beneficial.

OuTDOOR EDuCATION EXPEDITION

As part of their practical assessment for Unit 3, the Year 12 Outdoor Education class recently went on a Bushwalking Expedition from the Margaret River Mouth to Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse along the Cape to Cape Track. It was the first time students from All Saints’ had completed this expedition. The students’ preparation and planning was very pleasing, allowing them to complete the four day, 64km expedition safely and efficiently. All students took turns in leading the expedition, which allowed them to further develop decision-making, communication and leadership skills.

Along the hike they also participated in a number of lessons, which were extremely beneficial as they were able to link a variety of theories with the practical demands of the expedition. Whilst the hike was challenging at times in the soft sand with heavy packs, it proved to be a rewarding learning experience for all involved. The spectacular coastline and amazing weather was definitely a highlight.

STIRlING HOuSE BAKE SAlE FOR BEYOND BluE

On Wednesday, 17 May, Stirling House held their annual Bake Sale with all proceeds going to Beyond Blue.

Stirling House students put in an incredible effort of baking, putting together some amazing creations to raise money for a worthy cause that focuses on youth wellbeing.

The students demonstrated their commitment to Service at the College by displaying great levels of organisation, time management and teamwork. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes for events such as these, and we thank all students and parents who helped make this event so successful. Congratulations to Murdoch on raising a total amount of $815 for Beyond Blue.

The Play in a Day workshop is an amazing opportunity for lower secondary school students to work with one of Perth’s most in-demand directors, Katt Osborne.

In six short hours you will form an ensemble to create a brand new play for presentation that day – devising scenes, taking direction and rehearsing scenes. A fast and frenetic day designed to get your creative juices boiling and have a taste of what it is like to be an actor working on a show. This will be a fun day like no other, and a great step-up for any students with ATAR Drama aspirations.

About Katt OsborneKatt is a director, producer and theatre maker. She is an artist with The Last Great Hunt, and loves theatre that is absurd, funny and dark. Directing highlights include Minnie & Mona Play Dead (Fringe World 2013, Winner Martin Sims Best New WA Work), They Ran ‘Til They Stopped, The Bearskinner and Elephents (The Blue Room Theatre 2014, Fringe World 2015, Winner ‘Best New Play’ Performing Arts WA industry awards).
