Summer Update ’11Sophomore SuccessBy Chris Powell

Sophomore year is commonly referred to as the “Sophomore slump”, as complacency sets in to create lackluster performance. This summer marked the second annual Jim Kincaid Memorial Golf Tournament, and as the memory of Jim Kincaid fades, many worried about attendance at the event.

This year though, Chi Deuteron graduates avoided the sophomore slump and raised more money than the first year.

Reason to celebrate indeed. The total count included 85 golfers, 15

Fijis, and almost $14,500 earned. The first recipients of the Jim Kincaid

Memorial Tournament Scholarships were Cabinet members Mitchell Keating and Zach Johnson. Runner’s up included: Eric Bartley and Chris Powell.

“...better auction items. That’s where we made our money, so we didn’t need as many participants.”said co-founder and event organizer Randy Coble.

Application deadline for the spring Jim Kincaid Scholarship is September 30th, and the winners will be announced after homecoming.

Coble plans to try to move the event to September this next year, to boost undergraduate involvement.

Proud of the House He Builtby Chris Powell

After a year of bid cards, recruitment events, prospectives, and house tours, Fall 2011 recruitment is finally finished. Andy Miller, ’13, reached his goal of 20. There were a couple last minute additions, but Andy showed the persistence to get the guys he wanted to make his goal even when they had contracts with the residence halls on campus. Fall ’11 stretches from across the nation. Minnesota, Texas, Connecticut, and all around Kansas make up a diverse group of the best guys rushing this year. “I definitely have to thank all the guys who gave me names (potential rushes).” says Miller. “My committee put in a lot of work, we have the most work in the house”. Well, congratulations are in order Miller. The new year has started and brother Brandon Haggard has been elected the new recruitment chair. So now all you have left is to enjoy the house you built.

Brotherly Opportunityby Chris Powell

If you haven’t noticed yet, the dining room looks a little shinier. This summer brother Jace Larsen ’14 was commissioned to build new dining room tables. No simple table will do for a chapter house of Phi Gamma Delta. After careful design, the bids came in on tables from multiple companies nearby, $1,500 to $2,500 a table. This is where Jace came in. Jace worked on the tables countless hours after work and completed the project with each table costing just under $1,000 each. The frame of the tables is built of oak with american walnut finish. Seven different cross braces make for a sturdy table. The edges were routed adding a nice touch. He used a waterfall edge formica top.
