Social Media: A changing landscape

Putting mobile first

Mobile v. Desktop

When things go viral, use of mobile goes way up.

When people like something they share it.

When they share it they use their phones.

Snapchat DiscoverApple News FB Instant Articles

Medium – an effective, easy-to-use, and free mobile storytelling platform

We have hundreds of reports

How do we get people to read them?

To maximize impact, any new report more closely resembles a set of Russian dolls, with multiple ‘products’ required to hit different audiences and get the message out.”

- Duncan Green

Use micro-content

Example:“Meet the Somalis”

So when you launch a report

• Bold, beautiful photos

• Statistics that make you think “wow, I never thought of [insert thing you do] like that before”

• Quotes from person not employed by UNDP speaking about what we did

• 1-3 page summary/highlights report

Think about how YOU consume media

So what does this mean for us ?

• You need to ask yourself “If I didn’t work at UNDP would I read this?”

• When producing content, think about it like those Russian dolls

• Visual is key: Good photos and quick, accessible facts

• What’s the headline? What are the highlights?

“I skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been”

Conclusion

Photos show the face of the story

Comics do too

Use clear, human language

“All our communication must be immediately explicable to the non-DFID reader. Clear language conveys clear thought. Its poor use suggests sloppy thinking.” – Alan Duncan

Show the real story!

(Hint: This isn’t it)

This is!
