OUR MISSIONTo enable children with hearing loss to reach their full potential by teaching them listening, speaking and literacy skills.

OUR VISIONAll children with hearing loss will be identified early, families will have access to medical and educational resources, and professionals will provide a supportive learning environment where self-reliance through listening and spoken language is achieved.

A SPECIAL MESSAGEFROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends of CHS,

This year has been both challenging and joyous. Across the city, we witnessed the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey. Despite the challenges, The Center for Hearing and Speech was able to exceed many of our goals, extend our services to more families in the Houston area than ever before and commemorate our 70th anniversary.

In 1947, four parents founded the Houston School for Deaf Children to give their children with hearing loss the option to communicate orally. Lucille Turner was the school’s first teacher in a small cottage on Austin Street.

Since those humble beginnings, the Center has experienced unbelievable growth. Nationally renowned as the most comprehensive resource for pediatric hearing loss in Texas, the Center is the only facility in the region to offer health services and spoken language education for hearing-impaired children under one roof. For the fifth consecutive year, CHS has experienced double-digit growth, serving 8,502 children from 33 counties. The accomplishments of The Center for Hearing and Speech over the past seven decades were possible because of the tenacity, dedication and passion of an amazing community of supporters. We are indebted to the incredible individuals and groups who have contributed to our and our children’s success.

CHS is a team of over 50 individuals who are on the front lines every day working to improve the lives of children with hearing loss. CHS employs 7 of the 10 Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapists in Texas and the first and only Certified Auditory-Verbal Educator and Administrator in the state. Because hearing loss remains the nation’s most common birth disorder, we realize that our services are vital to the community and the region. As a credit to the level of expertise that exists here at the Center, we arenow bursting at the seams, and we are working tirelessly to ensure that our resources touch every family who is in need.

The CHS Board is working collaboratively with our staff to create a vision for the future, ensuring we stay committed to our core principles, while expanding to reach more children over the next several years. The future of CHS depends on the generous spirit of the Houston community and the shared belief that all children should be able to learn to listen and speak, even if they are deaf. We have come a long way from the cottage on Austin Street. Thank you for helping us continue this incredible success story. It would not be possible without you.

Sincerely,

Renée DavisExecutive Director

THEMIRACLESover the years that led us to this point

In 1947, The Center for Hearing and Speech was founded by four parents with a bold dream that deaf children could learn to listen and speak, enabling them to communicate with their families and the community. Over the years, many things have changed. Technology and teaching techniques have improved substantially, and mandated newborn hearing screenings have led to earlier detection and intervention.

“Keysen was diagnosed with profound hearing loss bilaterally at 18 months. He received his first cochlear implant at age of 2, followed by the second at 2.5 years. At the time of implantation Keyson spoke no words, only making a few sounds. His journey to listening and spoken language began at The Center for Hearing and Speech where he received regular audiology testing and weekly speech sessions with a certified auditory-verbal speech therapist. He also enrolled in the Melinda Webb School to receive instruction from a master’s level deaf educator teacher. If you were to meet Keysen, you’d probably not know he was deaf, especially if you get him talking about his beloved Houston Astros. This fall, Keysen begins his 2nd season playing in little league baseball, where last season he made the all-star team! Thanks to The Center for Hearing and Speech, he truly is just like any normal-hearing child with a future of endless opportunities.

— Kimberly Woods (Keysen’s Mom)
