make the grammar more understandable tothe English reader.

How did you get interested in Astrology?

I did not know that I had the ability to doastrology. I thought that this science is notfor me. An accidental situation presented it-self to me and I began to study astrology.Still, I did not know that I would actuallybecome an astrologer. I discovered theworld of astrology by accident and neverthought that I would become really in-volved with such an esoteric subject.

In 1995 I was approached by my friendwith a request to support him in his train-ing. He wanted to study astrology, but hisnatural modesty prevented him from com-ing to an unfamiliar group (his Sun is in theCancer). He asked me to appear

with him in class. We agreed to when tostart classes, but my friend did not come ...He was frightened and did not come. Hepersuaded me to go again, saying that thenext time he will really come. The next les-sons he again did not come. On the thirdand fourth lessons, as you might imagine,he did not appear ... Well, by then I hadtaken a great interest in the study of astrol-ogy, that he himself had wanted to learn.

My professional practice as an astrologerbegan in 1997 when I registered as an en-trepreneur and began to give private consul-tations on astrology. Later I worked in theCenter Astrological Consulting’s, in theCenter for Alternative Medicine “Aster +”and a number of other projects associatedwith the astrological counseling. This cre-ative path allowed me to gain experience inwritten and oral consultation, learn the nu-ances of expressing myself in remote con-sultations. My astrological practice nowoperates in four Russian cities: Moscow,Sochi, Omsk and Izhevsk. Since my studentyears, and to this day, I am take an activepart in the life of the astrological commu-nity. I do organizing of learning, masterclasses, meetings and conferences.

I am interested not only in astrology, I ex-amine the esoteric influence of sound to aperson’s life, I study the transcendental in-fluence of symbols, and I work with theancient practices of prophecies. Since1998, I began practicing of integral yoga, taking in the full scope of meditationtechniques of expanded knowledge anduncover forms of creativity.

I have developed a method of teaching as-trology, which allows the student after 3months to read a chart. Astrologers, whoare working on this system, to identify keypoints in the horoscope are spending nomore than 20 minutes in a reading. This ef-fect is achieved by paying special attentionto the philosophy of astrology and the abil-ity to read nonverbal layers of information.I try to instill in students a love of readingcharts, because it is as creative flight, inwhich astrologers not only read charactertraits, he begins to feel deeply, then hethinks through symbols, and finally he livesthrough them.

Are there many practicingastrologers in Russia?

There are a lot of people who study astrol-ogy in Russia; but professional astrologers, for which astrology is the main source ofincome, these astrologers are still a smallgroup. Most of the astrologers in Russiawork without registration of legal docu-ments, believing that astrology cannot givea substantial financial gain, sufficient for anormal existence. Astrology is used mainlyas an additional source of income, so peoplecannot devote enough time to astrology;they cannot be fully engaged in their ca-reers and, therefore, the income of Russianastrologers a small. Such a person gets intoa vicious circle. On the one hand, he isafraid that he will be left without means oflivelihood and he works a job, whichthough not related to astrology, gives him aregular income. On the other hand, thisperson cannot earn a real astrological in-come because he is not devoting enoughtime to the development of his real career. In spite of this fact, the level of knowledgeof such astrologers is sufficiently high: theyare very inquisitive, read a lot of books onastrology, follow the events on the marketof astrology, follow the book novelties and

explore new techniques of interpretation ofthe horoscope; but since astrology is nottheir full-fledged profession, then they can-not be called professionals. There is moresuitable definition of these astrologers as“highly qualified amateurs.” The number ofcustomers for such astrologers is small, only5 - 10 consultations per month, as this typeof astrologer advises in a very narrow circleof their friends.

I do not blame these people. They under-stand that keeping full time businessrequires certain amount of personal risk. Therefore, people go often the path ofleast resistance. Most astrologers are of this group.

Much less often do I meet astrologers forwhich astrology is their profession; they arefull time consultants. They realize that theircareers depend on their ability to do busi-ness. They devote all their time to thiswork. Today, the benefit is great as there arelots of opportunities available for privateconsultations in Russia. You can open anoffice and you can conclude a partnershipagreement with the center of psychology orbeauty salon. The main issue for astrologersis to explore the market, find potentialclients, and make steps toward these peo-ple. Many professional astrologers havearranged to work in the esoteric side of acompany, conducting consulting for money.

There are professional astrologers who se-lect for their professional income the real-ization of teaching or writing. Thisparticular type of astrologer, to implementin these directions, must have certain quali-ties; so astrologers who can realize them-selves as writers or teachers are very small.

There is another type of astrologer; the“hidden astrologers.” This type of as-trologer does not conduct paid advice and

does not advertises his astrological skills;these people use astrology in other profes-sions, and astrology for them is an additionto their main profession. For example, doc-tors who in their practice use cycles of theplanets. Painters, poets, and musicians, (whoin their creative work use esoteric insight, as-trology being one of them) form anotherlarge group. Craftsmen who in their work ac-count of the position of the planets, investi-gators, merchants, designers, and so on,compose another very large group using as-trology. These people are not astrologers inthe conventional sense, they are the “hiddenastrologers,” but their level of knowledge ofastrology, as a rule, is quite high. They do nothave enough experience in consulting, butthey are well aware of astrology in practice, testing the effect of planets on their lives.

Is it normal for a Russian citizento ask for information from anastrologer?

In Russia, the astrologers are perceived well.Naturally, as in other countries, the churchdoes not recognize astrology, so believers arewary of astrology. Russian people arefriendly; they are open to new knowledgeand respect people who have chosen a spiri-

tual path in life. Therefore, the recognitionof an astrologer by society depends on theastrologer. If an astrologer can not find aconnection with a client he meets, he will bemisunderstood and condemned by the peo-ple in this client’s circle of friends. Well, when astrologers are able to find commonlanguage with customers, if they meet theexpectations of the client, if they can offer aservice the client needs, then such as-trologers do not have problems with clients.Such astrologers the people perceive asgood. For me is very important when myfriends speak with respect to other people, that I an astrologer. It shows their confi-dence in me, when they get to know me as aprofessional. I really cherish this attitude ofmy friends.

How much do Russianastrologers charge for areading? Is it possible to earn alivelihood through givingreadings?

Earn a living with predictions it is difficultto. There are very few astrologers in Russiawho can earn a livelihood only throughpredictions.

Rigid pricing policy the Russian astrologersdoes not exist. Much depends on the regionin which the astrologer works and on theindividual qualities of the individual as-trologer. Oral consultations with an as-trologer will cost from 10 to 100 U.S.dollars. Written work costs from 50 to 300U.S. dollars.

Of great importance is the city in which theastrologer lives. For example, in large cityyou must be earning at least U.S. $ 2,000per month and for a small town it is enoughto earn $ 1,000 per month. So astrologers intheir practice actively use modern technol-ogy. The Internet allows consulting withoutleaving your home and to advise peopleanywhere in the world.

Do Russian astrologers havemuch contact with each other? Is there much of a sense ofcommunity?

Yes, the astrological community in Russia isvery amicable. There are many astrologicalgroups. We support each other, helping indifficult situations and we share our experi-ence. We exchange books, spend time insmall meetings to

Is the astrology practiced inRussia similar to the astrologypracticed in the United States? Is there any indigenoustradition of astrology in Russia,or did it come primarily fromwestern Europe and theAmericas?

During the reign of the Communists inRussia, astrology was banned. Therefore, wedon’t have our own astrological tradition.Knowledge of Russian astrologers is basedon knowledge of other people’s astrology. The formation of modern astrology in Rus-sia was greatly influenced by Western Eu-rope, America, India and China.

I do not know fully the techniques that aremethods used by American astrologers, butI think that the Russian astrologers in theirpractice do not differ from the Americanastrologers.

From your perspective, whattrends to you see unfolding;where do you see astrologygoing next in your country?

For a long time astrology was banned inRussia. The communist authorities consid-ered astrology as false doctrine. Astrologerswere persecuted by the authorities, and all

books on astrology were banned. Noweverything is different. Today the authoritiesallow the study of all esoteric practices whichincludes astrology. In the 80s of last century, people had to hide their Hobbies, now as-trology is considered normal. Astrologicalforecasts have become mandatory in news-papers, magazines, television and radio. As-trologers freely work in private practice, andthe services astrologers are enjoyed by pri-vate firms. Getting a job working as an as-trologer for a company in Russia has becomecompetitive, it becomes more popular all thetime, and future prospects look very good.

Today in Russia, esoteric thought has takenon new forms of influence; there is a fusionof science, philosophy, and religion with es-oteric disciplines. If you have previously hada clear delineation of these areas you are in agood position. Along with economic andpolitical changes our country is developing adifferent world outlook. Today astrology isnot considered as paranormal science, manyresearchers see it as common sense.

It should be noted what kind of role isplayed by the OPA in the process of the for-mation of astrology in Russia. The CareerAstrologer, which is now published in Russ-ian, brings to people’s ideas of our organiza-tion, helping the reader to determine theformation of personal ideological base, toform the image of a professional astrologer.Articles published in the newsletter, find aready response among Russian astrologers.

CounselingClients withMultiplePlanets in the 12th House

When counseling clients with multipleplanets in the 12 house here is what comes tomy mind while exploring the chart with theclient —

People with planets in the 12th houseexperience intense psychic activity connectedto the collective unconscious (Pisces/Neptune). When I look at it from apsychological point of view I assume thatfrom a young age, they invested a lot ofenergy in making sense and differentiate(unconsciously) from the collectiveunconsciousness so they can build a cohesiveEgo self. That means: they worked harderthan most people to separate what is theirs’and what belongs to the other.

I find that clients are flooded with emotionsand experience difficulties to process them.Their rational mind can’t make sense with allthey feel intuitively. In many cases, aschildren, they had mystical experiences theylearned not to share, as they were denied ordismissed. They had a rich active inner lifethey learnt to protect and until adult yearsthey mostly repressed it, and some still do.

Planets in the 12 imply that the person isintuitive. Why? Because their psyche isporous to the outside world. They can senseother people’s feeling, pain and suffering, thus putting a massive pressure on theirpsyche which in turn creates accumulatedguilt, anxiety and helplessness. Why anxiety?Because they don’t have an explanation forthose feelings; Why guilt and helplessness?

Because in their minds their well being, depends on other peoples’ well being andthey don’t see how they could alleviate otherpeople’s sufferings.

A substantial relief comes when their experi-ence is being explained, validated, normalizedand explored with them. For example, they rec-ognize it deeply when they are advised towatch out for becoming a martyr with the de-sire to rescue people who don’t want to be res-cued, thus becoming co-dependent. They feel itin their bones when guided to do communitywork and to choose a spiritual path, if theyhave not already done so.

Since the 12th deals with dreams, theyrespond very well to dream work. I willrecommend meditation and explain theimportance of clearing their mind fromoutside noise (which is recommended for allof us but especially to 12th house people).

I would recommend initiating to spend timealone. It will rejuvenate their psyche.

To sum it up: Our role as astrologer/counselors is to first explore our clients’experiences and to validate, and normalizethose feelings for them. “Yes, it makes sensethat you had a feeling of what was going tohappen.” “Yes, you sense other people’sfeelings, because your psyche is connected tothe Universal Mind." "No, you are not crazy.”Encouraging them to maintain solidboundaries is a good advice for 12th house people.

When King Wen (1152–1056BC)1 set out to write his com-mentary on the I Ching, he

held Heaven, Earth and Humanity as hisgreatest gifts. The legacy he left behind wasdesigned to be a guide living authentically, with great vitality and high social awareness. Each line of these ancient Chinese Hexa-grams has been related to six different rolesin society. In 20th century Astrology, DaneRudhyar2 would refer to a six-fold division ofthe zodiac as a series of zyzygies or “modesof operation” and related these stages to tra-ditional Indian Advaita Philosophy.3 Recog-nizing the six people in your chart links theseancient concepts with modern life with itsrelentless information overload, political andsocial unrest, but also to its underlining enor-mous potential and promise.

Two figures stand out as central to thisscheme, the King or Father, absolute andcommanding, and the Official or Mother, re-ceptive, supportive and perfecting. Life is fullof pitfalls that can easily derail the best of in-tentions to balance the two. Yet, knowing thedifferences and underlying harmony puts usin touch with that central still point wherelessons become stepping stones and barriersbecome bridges.

It all starts with the sixth stage, which isthe youngest child or the common people.Natural and youthful, what little socialawareness there is takes a back seat to its en-thusiasm and oblivious unconcern. It is aworld of blacks and whites, where there areno precedents or assumptions. This personembodies the qualities of Aries and Taurus ofWestern Astrology and Rudhyar would re-

late it to Parashakti, the great or supremepower or force. Self-reliance and resilienceare its virtues and awill-to-be its goal. Itdoesn't take muchimagination to seehow this energystrongly figures intothe American mindsetof independence andunencumbered individuality. Its objectives areimmediate and self-gratifying, pushingeverything as far as it will go, only backingdown when some other better opportunitypresents itself. Experiences in this dimensionform deep-seated impressions and inevitablyset the stage for its unfolding in other stages.

The next step is that of the Official orMother and lies in a position of power, pro-tected by the figures around her. She is freeto sense the world without competing withit, learning the special qualities of each expe-rience while developing an awareness of herspecial uniqueness. She contains the power ofcreation by yielding to the forces she con-tains, not through conquest, but with com-passion and acceptance. In return, she offersa way to replace the fear of not being able tosurvive with the confidence that we haveeverything we need to prosper and grow. Shespeaks in a language that is emotionally rich, distinguishing shades of meaning and innu-endo, taking it all in, listening from her heart. The signs of Gemini and Cancer and theirplace in your chart point to this energy. Rud-hyar refers to “unfoldment” and relates it to

Gnanashakti and the cre-ation of a permanentidentity or self. An innerwillingness to venture outand engage distinguishesthe Official as playing apivotal role in the series ofthe other five symbols.

The third line com-pletes the lower trigram ofeach I Ching symbol andrepresents a Lord or Mid-

dle Son or Daughter. It is volatile and unpre-dictable. Without discipline, it can easily spinout of control. Fire and Water best describeits dynamic nature, providing brightness andenergy as well as emotional inspiration.Western Astrology associates the signs ofLeo and Virgo with this stage. These are theperformers, the people with special skills andabilities that add value to ordinary things, in-fusing them with their own special brand ofcreativity. They are the actors and artists whoredefine themselves, challenging the way welook at the world by their interpretations andportrayals of the human experience. They arethe scientists and technologists who inventnew approaches to solving the problems ofmodern life. Although they have little deci-sion making power in the social order, theimpact of their creations is felt everywhere. They are labor, whose job it is to createsomething valuable and relevant. Rudhyarconnects this stage to Ichchashakti or “thepower of the will”. Look to these signs aswell as the fifth and sixth houses to see wherethis influence manifests in your chart.

begins the Upper or Heavenly trigram of theI Ching symbol. From this point on,influence and connection replaces self-reliance and independence. Persuasionbecomes more important than personal willpower, much like the upper half of theWestern Chart. This is the realm of theMinister or Eldest Son or Daughter. Becauseof its proximity to the King above it, theMinister holds a place of humility and tact.As the king’s representative, he holds astatus above the workers and artisans belowhim, but his responsibilities are many withlimited decision making power. This is aposition of mediator or enforcer whounderstands the law and applies his wisdomto practical issues. In Western Astrology, there is an obvious tie to Libra and herdarker companion, Scorpio. This is the roleof the judge, or the middle manager, whoneed to focus on productivity and results. Itis also the role of the husband and wife wholook to accommodate to each other’sexpectations and aspirations. Rudhyarassigns this power to Kriyashakti, the forcethat produces results from ideas and intents, much like the power behind The Secret4

made so popular in recent years.Line five is the King or father and holds

the most powerful position of all six lines. This is the place where decisions are madeand a vision originates for allotting power tothe other five figures. Although the king issupreme, he has the responsibility of distrib-uting his power to where it is needed. Hisstrength is to form a strategy which benefitsthe entire system and so defines the law anddelegates control accordingly. It’s importantto understand the king does not execute thelaw, but rather creates it. In that sense he islike the Mother, only his creations are nottied to the Earth, but rather to principles, honor and integrity. His influence is felt byeveryone. The signs of Sagittarius and Capri-corn align with this energy as do the ninthand tenth houses. Kundalinishakti is theforce that Rudhyar links to this role, the de-scent of the spiritual force, which has a re-generating effect on the material plane. It isassociated with relevance, inspiration andempowerment. When the vision of the kingis clear, harmony is infused into every aspectof society. When clouded, chaos reigns andeveryone suffers.

The Chinese regarded both the sixth andthe first lines to be insignificant, concentrat-ing on the more powerful inner four lines. The reasoning behind this is similar to a rule

in Horary Astrology which regarded theearly and final degrees of a sign as either toosoon or too late to be of much relevance. The sixth line refers to the Sage or retiredgrandparent who has moved beyond partici-pating in the social struggle of the other fig-ures. This also can refer to special interestgroups who, while individually weak, are in-fluential when operating as an organizedwhole. Aquarius and Pisces relate mostpowerfully to this stage. They representhighly focused interests which are often thewave of the future. In modern Western soci-ety, they are anything but weak. The imageof the sage does conjure up a return to theelemental forces of the world as means offinding our spiritual roots. According tomany studies, Americans take matters of re-ligion more seriously than most other na-tions, for better or worse. Rudhyarassociates this power with Matrikashakti, literally, the power of the thought or word, a theme we look to as the events of our timeput our most cherished principles of free-dom and democracy to the test.

t hank you Louise McCombs and Sandra-LeighSerio for a wonderful experience at theMidwest Astrology Conference in Ann Arbor, MI

at the beginning of August. I have been to many ofthe larger conferences; UAC, NCGR, ISAR but had

never experienced a regional conference. This was my first and I cannotexpress how much I enjoyed it.

Every lecture I attended was better than the one before. I would behard-pressed to say which lecture I enjoyed the most. One thing is forsure, I was surprised at how much I learned — and that is the beauty ofthis conference. There were world-class astrologers teaching otherhungry astrologers. Hungry astrologers in the sense of finally, at last, being with like-minded people. It was wonderful.

I also manned OPA’s table at MAC and we got lots of inquiries, a paidnew member and retreat attendee — and a few potential members.

Since I live north of Chicago, in Evanston, IL, it wasn’t a difficult driveto make. In this drive, though, I accomplished the loss of a fear. I’vealways had a fear of high bridges and would avoid the Chicago Skywayat all costs. On the way to MAC and Ann Arbor, as I say the exit for theChicago Skyway, I said ‘what the heck’ and went for it.

I don’t know how many people attended MAC. I wasn’t expecting thereto be, I’m sorry to say, much more than 30

people. My best guess is thatthere were approximately200 people in attendance. That makes me happy forthe future of MAC - thatLouise and Sandra-Leighput on further conferences

and, hopefully, in Michigan.

Arlan WiseAstrology Writer’sTrackWhat do we do in thesewriting workshops? Wewrite. We encourageeach other with mutual support whilewe write and then read what we havewritten. The value of attending a writingworkshop comes in finding one’s writingvoice through the action of writing. Oneof the objects of the class is to evict frommemory the voice of that high schoolteacher who gave you a C- on a paperand said you could never write well. It isvalidating to write with others and re-ceive mutual support while an intimacybuilds over the three days in a safe andsecure container. You learn that you area good writer, and, yes, you can write.
