Fraserburgh FC Official Matchday Programme

Tonight we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Huntly Football Club to Bellslea Park for our Press & Journal Highland League tie. First and foremost I must congratulate the players and management for their efforts on Saturday in securing the Aberdeenshire Cup for the second year running. We were proud to have it sitting in our boardroom all of last season and are delighted that it remains there. It wasn’t the best of games but cup finals very rarely are. The important thing is that we won the cup and our name goes into the handbook alongside the year. Once again our supporters were magnificent. The timing of the game meant a lot of people were on holiday with the kids being off school but for those who turned out in good numbers gave the lads tremendous backing. On behalf of everyone at the club I pass on our thanks. We are all supporters and there is no better feeling than seeing your team have success. It is why we are all involved. That is all past now and we move on with the league match tonight against Huntly. Gregg Carrol is no stranger to winning at the Broch and he will have his players pumped up and raring to go tonight so we need to make sure we play to our best as that is what will be required to get anything from the game. Huntly had a poor start to the season but have found form of late and will be out to clip our wings tonight.

We are at the start of a hectic period just now and this is our fourth match of October already with another four to go before the end of the month. That is followed by another seven games in November. Without sounding like a broken record that is what we will have to live with under the current set up of trying to fit an eighteen team league into a season that is five weeks shorter than it used to be. It isn’t by choice but necessity. Having said that, we are here now and I am sure everyone will be entertained tonight so let’s hope it’s the Broch fans who are going home the happiest. Come awa the Broch Finlay

Fraserburgh FC Official Matchday Programme

The matches against Fort William and Turriff United saw some excellent football coupled with hard work to dig out two great results. How happy were you with those performances and your preparations for the Cup Final? Looking back I am delighted with how we prepared for the final, especially with our form. I have told the guys that winning becomes a habit and momentum is a great thing. Once you get a couple of wins under your belt then, the confidence levels high and you see performances getting better. We managed to see off a stubborn Fort William side who will give a lot of teams problems. They were a lot more organised and we found it difficult to break them down. Over the piece I think we controlled the game, and even in the first half I felt they went ahead against the run of play. But second half we showed character and game back to win with a couple of goals from Willie, the first being an excellent hit. Then on the Wednesday we managed to get a win against Turriff which again was a difficult game. This was a hard one for me as I wanted to do well in the game but obviously I had one eye on the final. I rested Gizzy and Russell but still played a strong side and to their credit they matched Turriff in every area and deservedly won the game. Midweek games are not ideal, especially before a cup final but we are in the same position and all have to play midweek so I will never complain about it. Saturday saw another excellent display by the lads to retain the Aberdeenshire Cup. Did the game go to plan and how happy were you with the performance of the players who contributed to the win? I was delighted for the guys and my management team. Things haven't been easy and there has always been a comparison to the Aberdeenshire Shield final which we lost to Turriff. We didn't have much of a plan. We singled out a couple of players whom we tried to keep quiet and to their credit I feel we managed to do so. All I ask of the players is for them to give me 100% and we are now seeing that in every game we play. The guys work rate on and off the ball is great and it is down to this that we are seeing the results we are. It was mentioned to me that we did not concede a goal the whole competition and that is not only credit to our defenders, but also for our forwards as the start the pressing from up top. You saw the spirit the guys have and there is something here that no money can buy, a spirit and togetherness where each and every player works hard for their team mates. Russell McBride deservedly won the man of the match award. How important a player is he to the club and how long can he continue to play at this level?

I would like to take some of the credit for his MOTM performance as I decided against playing him against Turriff so that he was fresh for the final. He did not like that but I didn't expect him to. Russell is a leader and a winner and wants to play in every game there is. That attitude and desire is one of the main reasons he is still going. He is very intelligent and can read a game very well. Yes he may not have the legs of a teenager but he makes up for that in his speaking and positioning on a park. As for retiring, well Russell will tell me once its time to stop, not the other way around and I don't think it will be anytime soon. Should he keep injury free and still has the hunger, then I see no reason why he can’t play for another season or two yet. Tonight you turn your attention back to League business and face a tough match against Huntly who have been playing very well of late. How difficult a task will it be to keep the excellent run you are on going? There is no such thing as an easy game, never has been. Every team has a spell in every game and it is down to how well that team does when they have the upper hand. Huntly are without doubt one of the leagues form sides at this minute, as Gregg has done what he has done numerous times before, and assembled a team that work hard for him. He took in a lot of players in the summer and it may just have taken them a minute to gel, but now it looks like they have so we have to be at our best. I have said before that confidence is a great aspect in football, and Huntly will be coming down with no fear. The next few games, teams will be out to take us crashing back to earth so we will have to be mindful of that. We can not afford to get complacent and must continue to push on in games and start climbing the league as much as possible. All the best, Mark.

In only their second league campaign they became only the third team outside Inverness to win the league finishing two points ahead of closest rivals Elgin City & Inverness Thistle. The club would have to wait 64 years for another championship win and to a lot of supporters the greatest moment in the clubs 76 year history. Season 1965/66 saw 147 goals conceded in one season - a league record which still stands to this day.

Huntly FC player profiles Neale Allan (27) – Defender: Returns to the Highland League after a summer transfer from Banks O’ Dee featuring regularly at right back. Previous experience at this level with Deveronvale. David Booth (28) – midfield/forward: Back at Christie Park in 2011 for a fourth spell after a season with junior side Banks O' Dee and has been the club’s top scorer on a number of occasions since returning to the Highland league. Also as effective in midfield, Booth recently netted his 50th goal for the club. David Christie (25) – defender/midfield: Insch-based midfielder signed last season from junior side Islavale. Originally debuted as a trialist in January 2013 and featured regularly in the Aberdeenshire League. Has had previous Highland League experience with Inverurie Loco Works. Overseas work had limited his appearances since signing. Michael Clark (20) – Defender: Insch-based defender who returned to his local club in August. Originally debuted for the club as a schoolboy back in 2011. Sean Croll (28) – Defender: Centre half who followed Neale Allan to the club when signing from Banks O’ Dee. Had spent a number of years in the juniors before making the step up in the summer. Ian Cruickshank (28) - midfield: Joined from Banks O’ Dee, impressed as a trialist before signing in June 2014. Not one to shirk a tackle, his box to box play offers a lot in the middle of the park. Gary Davidson (32) - defender: right back who signed recently from Turriff United. Can also play in midfield or central defence, a good talker and an experienced head in defence. Dean Donaldson (32) – Winger/Forward: Experienced wide player who came to the club in the summer from Inverurie Loco Works. Has won a number of league and cup honours in his career. Has been used predominantly as a centre forward since signing for the club. Craig Dorrat (26) – defender/midfield/forward: Fans favourite who returned in December 2011 after a spell with Turriff United. A physical player who started as a forward earlier in his career. Impressed when converting into a centre half back in March 2013. Recently made his 200th squad appearance for the club. Fraser Hobday (20) - goalkeeper: Young English goalkeeper who debuted in February 2013 as a trialist away to Turriff United. Originally signed to provide back-up to the keepers at the club but impressed after taking the number one jersey after Shaun Barney departed in February 2014. Young player of the Year for the second consecutive year.

James Duguid (23) – Midfield/Forward: Former Fraserburgh and Turriff United player who signed in May after a spell at Maud where he netted 16 goals last season. Mark Lawson (29) – defender: Recent signing from Ellon United on a two year deal. Strong in defence and had an impressive debut for the club in the Scottish Cup. A good talker and influence on the pitch. Dangerous at set pieces, Mark has netted goals when up for corners. Murray McCulloch (31) – defender/midfield: Club captain, who signed from Keith in 2014, was a part of their league cup winning side in 2012/13. A great addition to the defence and midfield who is a proven winner with previous clubs Keith Cove Rangers and Inverurie Loco Works. Sam McKenzie (24) - defender: Big centre half who joined in June 2012 after his contract expired at Keith. With his chances limited with the maroon’s he spent time out on loan in the juniors and was a title winner with Hermes in 2011/12 Adam McNamee (24) – winger/forward: Pacy winger who can be a threat on the right flank. Early signs have been encouraging and McNamee has been tipped to be an exciting prospect to watch player by his Manager Gregg Carrol. Gary McNamee (29) – Defender/Midfield: The older brother of Adam has signed on a short term deal following a release from Inverurie Loco Works then signed a long term contract in the summer. Gives the management options in defence and midfield and brings experience to the side after a previous spell with Keith. Glenn Murison (17) – Midfield: Recent signing, the young midfielder who debuted at the end of last season. The local lad was previously with Huntly Youth and impressed in Huntly’s under 17s development squad. Andrew Pennycook (28) – Goalkeeper: Massive goalkeeper who moved north due to work commitments. Featured in pre-season games before signing. Made an impressive debut in the club’s Aberdeenshire Shield exit to Cove Rangers in September Aaron Scoular (24) – midfield: Close season signing from junior side Bridge of Don Thistle. Gives the manager another option in the middle of the park Alexander Thoirs (26) – defender/midfield: Pacy player who signed in 2011/12 from Dyce Juniors. Featured at full back and out wide but has tended to miss a number of games due to working offshore. A great work rate in whatever position he plays, Thoirs is a vocal player who reads the game well. John Urquhart (27) – defender/midfield: signed in December after playing for Deveronvale. Formerly with Lossiemouth and Buckie Thistle, Urquhart is equally at home in defence or midfield.

Match Report Vs Fort William Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League, Saturday 3rd October 2015, Fraserburgh v Fort William, Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh Fraserburgh created the first chance in the 2nd minute when a good move involving Ryan Cowie and Willie West down the wing saw a dangerous ball whipped across the face of goal just evading the in rushing Broch players Grant Noble and John Chalmers. Fort William then had a chance after 5 minutes when Donald MacPhee and Daniel Mackintosh combined to set up John McLeod who saw his shot from 15 yards saved by Joe Barbour. The visitors were not overawed by the home side and on 14 minutes they had another effort when a ball forward to McLeod saw him drive at the Broch defence before shooting at goal from just inside the box which Barbour did well to save. The Broch had a chance on 21 minutes when after a corner was cleared to the edge of the box to marc Lawrence he teed up Grant Noble but the striker’s effort went over the bar. The home side missed a great chance on 25 minutes when Ryan Cowie’s corner from the left was swung into the six yard box and met by Bryan Hay but he could only volley the ball over from a in front of the goal. The home side were now beginning to get a grip on the game and next to try his luck was Dean Cowie who picked the ball up on the edge of the penalty area and let fly but his shot was tipped over the bar by Douglas MacLennan. On 33 minutes a long ball forward found Grant Noble and he wriggled into the box and then set up Willie West but he saw his shot saved by MacLennan. Fort shocked the home side by taking the lead on 44 minutes. MacPhee won a free kick just outside the box and McLeod lashed the ball past Barbour and into the net. Half Time: Fraserburgh 0 Fort William 1 The Broch came out firing no doubt after a few hard words at the break and Russell McBride found Marc Lawrence with a raking pass, he slipped the ball to Noble but his shot was well saved by the keeper. On 54 minutes Ryan Cowie swung a free kick into the box from the right which Ryan Christie met with his head but once again MacLennan was in the right place to save. Chances were coming and going for the home side and next to try his luck was Chalmers but he couldn’t get his shot on target after good work by Lawrence. On 63 minutes Ryan Cowie fired in another corner which was met by West by his header went just over. Just when it seemed like it wasn’t going to be the Broch’s day they scored twice in a minute. The Broch managed to keep the ball in the Fort William box with Steven Davidson’s effort blocked, Marc Dickson also tried his luck but the ball broke back to Grant Noble and his acrobatic effort was also well defended but the ball fell kindly to West who squeezed home a shot from 18 yards in off the post. A minute later Marc Dickson won a corner on the right and Ryan Cowie swung the ball into the near post where West met it to bullet home a header. Fort tried to come back and McLeod had a couple of efforts over the bar whilst at the other end a free kick by Ryan Cowie was cleared out to Ryan Christie and his inventive chip went just over the bar. Saturday 3rd October 2015 Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Brora Rangers 1-1 Turriff United Brora Rangers survived the first half dismissal of Colin Williamson to secure a share of the spoils against Turriff United. The men from the Haughs took the lead on 55 minutes thanks to Nicky Gray’s strike but Richard Brittain levelled with 15 minutes to go for the hosts. Clachnacuddin 2-2 Formartine United Gary Wood gave Formartine the lead on 8 minutes but two goals in a minute from Blair Lawrie (25) & Daniel MacLennan (26) hade the home side ahead. Craig McKeown equalised for the visitors shortly before the break and despite both clubs efforts neither could find the winner in the second half. Cove Rangers 6-1 Nairn County A first half hat-trick by Daryl Nicol (6, 10 & 42) with further goals from Johnny Smith & Jamie Watt saw Cove put visitors to North Lodge Park, Nairn County to the sword. Daniel Park added a 6th goal on 72 minutes before Sam Urquhart got a consolation for the visitors on 83 minutes. Forres Mechanics 1-0 Rothes One goal was enough to settle this Speyside derby match at Mosset Park. The sides went in level at the break and it took until the 73rd minute before the deadlock was broken when a Connor Brian own goal was enough to give the home side all three goals. Fraserburgh 2-1 Fort William John MacLeod blasted home a free kick just before the break to give visitors Fort William a shock half time lead at Bellslea Park. It took until the 71st minute before the hosts levelled through Willie West and the same player scored a second a minute later to give the Broch all three points. Inverurie Loco Works 0-2 Lossiemouth Neither side could find the break through during an uneventful first half. Indeed it looked like the match would end goalless before Kevin Flett slotted home an 82nd minute penalty for Lossiemouth. The visitors doubled their lead 3 minutes later through Ross Archibald to claim an excellent win. Keith 1-5 Huntly Huntly claimed the spoils in this Aberdeenshire derby match with Craig Dorrat (6), Mark Lawson (15) & Dean Donaldson (33) all scoring before the break for the visitors. Strathspey Thistle 4-5 Buckie Thistle Chris Hegarty gave Buckie the lead on 10 minutes before Adam McLeod (18) and Stuart Patience (27) turned things around for Strathspey. Kevin Fraser levelled before the break and Ian Macrae put the visitors ahead on (57). Josh Peters levelled again on 65 minutes but Dennis Wyness (71) and s Shaun Carrol penalty on 83 minutes restored the Jags lead before John peters netted a second late on to make things nervy for Buckie.

William Hill Scottish Cup 1st Round Replay Whitehill Welfare 2-3 Wick Academy Sam Mackay and Steven Anderson scored on 18 and 42 minutes respectively to give Wick a two goal advantage at the break. Dale O’Hara pulled one back for Whitehill midway through the second half before Mackay restored Wick’s two goal advantage on 73 minutes. Muir reduced the leeway again on 80 minutes but Academy held on to progress to the second round. Wednesday 3rd October 2015 Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Buckie Thistle 2-6 Forres Mechanics Forres Mechanics walloped Buckie Thistle despite going a goal behind after only 7 minutes thanks to Denis Wyness’ strike. Goals from Craig McGovern (17 & 52), Ross MacPherson (20), Stuart Soane (42) & Lee Fraser (54) had the Can-Cans on easy street before Stuart Taylor pulled one back on 61 minutes. Ross MacPherson added his second of the match in injury time to put the icing on the cake. Deveronvale 1-3 Cove Rangers Scott Fraser gave the home side a shock lead on 9 minutes against unbeaten Cove but the Toonsers came back to level on 26 minutes through Jamie Watt. Second half goals by Daryl Nicol (56) and Daniel Park (67) saw the visitors pick up all three points and maintain their 100% record in the league. Formartine United 5-1 Nairn County Nairn visited Station Park for the second time in four days and just like the previous match they went down to a heavy defeat. Graeme Rodger (10), Scott Barbour (19) and Garry Wood’s first of the evening after 35 minutes saw the Pitmedden side into a comfortable half time lead. Alan Pollock’s goal a minute after the restart threatened a comeback but Garry Wood completed his hat-trick with a penalty after 57 minutes and another on 68 to seal a fine win for the home side. Fort William 1-2 Clachnacuddin Daniel MacLennan gave the visitors Clach the lead on 8 minutes in this Highland derby match. Darren Quigg levelled matters up 7 minutes into the second half but Michael Finnis restored Clach’s lead on 58 minutes and try as they might Fort couldn’t find a second equaliser. Huntly 2-3 Brora Rangers Huntly almost pulled off the shock result of the evening but a late goal by Andrew Greig saw all three points head back to Dudgeon Park. There was an amazing start with three goals inside the opening quarter of an hour. Zander Sutherland gave Brora the lead on 7 minutes before Alexander Thoirs levelled 2 minutes later. Paul Brindle restored Brora’s lead on 12 minutes and that’s how things stood at half time. David Booth netted midway through the second half to restore parity and just when it seemed Huntly were going to claim a well deserved draw up popped Andrew Greig to shatter the home side’s hearts with the winner on 88 minutes.

Keith 3-2 Strathspey Thistle Ryan Stewart’s second minute strike gave Keith an early lead in an otherwise uneventful first half at Kynoch Park. The same couldn’t be said for the second half though with Scott Hume equalizing for the visitors after 50 minutes. Matthew MacDonald had Keith back in front 5 minutes later before Jack Maley levelled again on 75 minutes. With 5 minutes left Kris Duncan fired home the winner for Keith. Lossiemouth 0-2 Wick Academy Gary Weir was both hero and villain as Wick secured all three points at Lossiemouth. The visitor’s striker sent Wick on their way after 18 minutes but was red carded in the last minute. It didn’t affect the result as Marc McGregor scored Wick’s second shortly after. Rothes 0-4 Inverurie Loco Works Locos warmed up for the Aberdeenshire Cup Final with a comfortable 4-0 win at Rothes. Michael Selfridge opened the scoring after 27 minutes for the visitors and John Maitland doubled the lead on 59 minutes. Jordan Leyden’s double on 82 & 90 rounded off the scoring. Turriff United 1-2 Fraserburgh Fraserburgh claimed all three points at the Haughs with a hard fought win. Goals just after the break from Grant Noble and Bryan Hay had the visitors in a comfortable position before Cammy Bowden’s late header made things a bit more interesting but the Broch held on. Saturday 10th October 2015 Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Final Inverurie Loco Works 0-2 Fraserburgh Two second-half goals saw Fraserburgh win the Aberdeenshire Cup. The first period of the final at Huntly’s Christie Park was one of few chances. The Broch’s Grant Noble flicked a header wide while at the other end of the park, Joe Barbour saved a header from Andy Hunter. The deadlock was finally broken, in the 57th minute, with a superb 30-yard strike from Ryan Christie. Fraserburgh wrapped up their victory late on when Steven Davidson scored a header shortly after coming on as a substitute. Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Brora Rangers 3-0 Strathspey Thistle Two first-half goals from Paul Brindle helped Brora beat Strathspey. The striker opened the scoring in the 16th minute when he scored a header following a cross from Andrew Greig. Brindle’s second saw him slot the ball into the net after rounding Strathspey keeper Michael MacCallum. Brora rounded off their win in the 72nd minute when Colin Williamson supplied the final touch to a flowing move forward. Clachnacuddin 1-2 Turriff United Turriff edged out Clach in a closely-fought game. United scored first when Nick Gray blasted a shot into the net following a scramble in the home side’s penalty area. But Clach got back on level terms in the 33rd minute thanks to a goal from Daniel MacLennan.

Shortly before half time Turriff were awarded a penalty following a foul on Gray by home keeper Errol Watson. Artjoms Kuznecovs converted his spot-kick and the visitors left Inverness with all three points. Forres Mechanics 2-0 Keith Liam Baxter’s scored after 90 seconds as Forres beat Keith. The Mechanics forward cut inside from the left wing and from a tight angle dispatched a shot past keeper David Dey. The Can-Cans doubled their advantage in the 11th minute when Dachi Khutsishvili drove the ball home after Keith failed to clear a corner from Simon Allan. Craig McGovern fired a shot off a post, while Dey made a good save from an effort by Lee Fraser, as Forres were unable to add to their tally. Formartine United 0-1 Cove Rangers Daryl Nicol’s stunning second-half strike saw Cove defeat title rivals Formartine. The Aberdeen side are top of the table with 12 wins from 12 matches. They are five points clear of second-placed Brora and have a game-in-hand over their nearest rivals. Formartine came close to opening the scoring during the first half when Scott Barbour’s strike hit the inside of a post. The winning goal arrived in the 53rd minute as Nicol scored with a dipping shot following a flick-on by Jonny Smith. Deveronvale 2-2 Lossiemouth Scott Fraser’s late goal earned Deveronvale a share of the spoils against Lossiemouth. The home side took the lead with a strike from Gary Harris early in the second half, only for the visitors to race into the lead thanks to a double from Scott Miller. Deveronvale were reduced to 10 men when Connor Rennie was sent off late on, but there was still time for Fraser to score a dramatic equaliser. Nairn County 5-2 Fort William Conor Gethins hit a hat-trick in Nairn’s defeat of Fort William. The County striker opened the scoring early on by bundling in an effort from Robbie Duncanson’s cross. Fort got back on level terms with a goal from John McLeod, but Nairn then retook the lead as Sam Urquhart rounded keeper Ryan Hunter before slotting the ball home. Gethins then netted with a header to put County two goals clear at the break and early in the second half Urquhart scored with a well-taken volley. Gethins completed his hat-trick in the 72nd minute courtesy of another header, then late on McLeod pulled a goal back for Fort William thanks to a cool finish. Wick Academy 7-0 Rothes Marc MacGregor scored four goals has he fired Wick to victory over Rothes. The Academy striker broke the deadlock early on with a shot from 10 yards, then doubled his tally with a powerful strike. MacGregor completed his hat-trick in the 35th minute by scoring at the second attempt. After the break, Davie Allan, Michael Steven and Colin Macrae all got on the scoresheet to put Wick six goals clear of the visitors. Late on MacGregor netted from close range to complete a fine personal performance from the forward.

For the first time ever 1962/ 63 had seen the club finish with the ‘wooden spoon’ by coming last in the Highland League with just three wins recorded. Along with the cup success the following season came an improvement in the League but only to third bottom and only two points clear of wooden spoon ‘winners’ Inverness Thistle but seven wins pointed to better times ahead. Sadly when it came to the league it proved to be a nightmare season and, for the second time inn three seasons the Broch propped up the league. They actually accrued one more point than in 1962/ 63, 10 as opposed to 9, and scored more goals, 67 as opposed to 34, a marked difference, but, at the same time conceded a whopping 138 goals, the worst ever for a Broch side with only Huntly on 142 conceding more! The overall record read – Played 30, Won 3, Drew 4, Lost 23, Goals For 67, Against 138, Points 10.

Two of the victories came here at Bellslea the first being in the opening game of the campaign with an exciting 5-3 win over Brora Rangers, the second did not arrive until December when Huntly were mauled 8-0. By far the most impressive of the three victories though came at Victoria Park, Buckie when they edged the Jags 4-3 in a thriller. This was no mean result either as Thistle finished fifth in the league. Not only that the Broch lost EVERY other match on their travels as all four draws were registered at Bellslea including a 4-4 outcome against Lossiemouth. It is fair to say that the Broch did not travel well that season, their narrowest defeat was 1-2 at Christie Park but at the other end of the scale nine were conceded away to Caledonian at Telford Street in a 4-9 reverse and also away to eventual champions Elgin City at Borough Briggs in a 3-9 mauling, to be fair Broch claimed a moral victory in the return match at Bellslea by only losing 0-2!. However, by far the worst loss and probably the clubs darkest hour came at Victoria Park, Dingwall on March 20th 1965 as the Broch was absolutely slaughtered by a rampant Ross County side who scored for fun and the final score was County 13 (yes 13!) Broch 2, easily the most the club has conceded in a competitive match and a record loss too I believe. So to the cup competitions and little joy here for the Broch. The Highland League Cup was the traditional curtain raiser to the season with teams divided into regional sections with just the winners qualifying for the semi-finals. As was the norm the Broch were in with Deveronvale, Peterhead and Huntly and promptly suffered a 0-5 reverse away to deadly rivals Blue Toon in the opening game. A hat-trick from Noble inspired the Broch to a 3-0 home win in their second match but then any hopes of qualifying all but ended when Peterhead won 4-0 here at Bellslea. That man Noble bagged a second hat-trick against Huntly in a 4-0 romp at Christie Park leaving the two games against Vale to play. The Banff side were all but through before the first game but needed a win at Princess Royal Park to be sure but they got a wee shock as the battling Brochers fought hard and gained a point in a 2-2 draw, Smith and Meldrum netting. Unfortunately that simply angered Vale and four days later they ran riot winning 6-1 at Bellslea, Smith again netting for the Broch. The Broch finished third in the section. Next came the Scottish Qualifying Cup (North) a trophy no longer competed for and the four teams who reached the semi-finals qualified for the Scottish Cup proper The Broch had done this in some style the previous season as they did just that the first step on the way being a wonderful 4-3 win at Bellslea over Peterhead. Sadly hopes of a final were dashed at home to eventual winners Forres Mechanics so the Broch were eager for a repeat run in 1964/ 65 but, after a first round bye, all hopes were dashed at Bellslea in the 2nd round as Deveronvale edged

it 2-1, Noble getting the Broch counter.

Team News for games on Wednesday 14th October 2015 Wick Academy v Deveronvale This is a meeting between two clubs who both have a lot of players unavailable at present. For Deveronvale, Scott Henry, Craig Cowie, Graeme Watt, Ross Aitken, Kevin Souter, Martin Charlesworth, Greg Buchan and Scott Fraser will all miss the visit to Harmsworth Park. Connor Rennie is suspended, while Liam Archibald and Kyle Rae are long-term absentees. Wick had seven players missing for their last match, a 7-0 win against Rothes. But Gary Weir and Sean McCarthy are available again. Inverurie Loco Works v Buckie Thistle Both clubs will be looking to bounce back from defeats in their previous matches. Locos lost to Fraserburgh in the Aberdeenshire Cup final, while Buckie were beaten by Forres in the league. Inverurie have been boosted by the return to fitness of several key players in recent weeks, although Gordon Forsyth and Ryan Robertson both remain out. Buckie are missing injured duo Andy Low and Andy Burr. Fraserburgh v Huntly Fraserburgh are on a high following their Aberdeenshire Cup final victory against Inverurie Locos. Broch boss Mark Cowie had a fully-fit squad to choose from for that game and must decide whether to make any changes to his team for the visit of Huntly. Huntly were not in action on Saturday, so have had a week to recover from any knocks picked up in their last match – a 3-2 defeat to Brora.

That just left the Aberdeenshire Cup to defend, Broch having been awarded the trophy the season before as final opponents Buckie Thistle withdrew. A first round bye left Broch one step from the final and in their way was lowly Huntly with the game at Christie Park. It turned out to be a close run thing as the teams fought out a 1-1 draw, McBain getting the Broch goal and hopes were high for the replay. If the first game was close then the replay at Bellslea was even closer and, after 90 minutes, the teams were locked at 1-1, full back Milne netting for the Broch, and that meant extra-time. As ever that was nervy but it was joy for the Broch as winger Smith notched the decisive goal. The other semi had also gone to a replay but Peterhead edged Buckie Thistle 4-3 in that at the Rec after a 1-1 draw. The final was over two legs in those days and the first was at Bellslea. It proved to be a dour battle and not a goal was scored. The feeling was the Broch needed a good lead to take to Fortress Recreation Park so their chances were slim after the first leg and, sadly, this proved to be the case as the Blue Toon lifter the Cup by running out 4-0 victors. A sad end to a very difficult campaign for Fraserburgh FC.

Turriff united match report

Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Wednesday 7th October 2015 Turriff United v Fraserburgh, The Haughs, Turriff The Broch came into this match looking for a good performance to set them up for the Aberdeenshire Cup Final against Inverurie Locos. There was an early chance for the visitors when Willie West shot from the left side of the penalty area was tipped over the bar by Kevin Main. On 8 minutes another good move between Steven Davidson and Ryan Cowie found Grant Noble and his chipped effort clipped the outside of the post. Turriff had a chance a minute later when a diagonal ball out to Gary McGowan saw him cut inside the box and fire a shot just over. On 15 minutes the home side came even closer when Andy MacAskill picked the ball up 18 yards out and smacked a drive off the crossbar with the rebound going to safety for the visitors defence. Played became a bit bogged down in the midfield area with neither side able to create any real chances. On 38 minutes Marc Lawrence chip to the back post was met by Willie West but his header was saved well by Main. The Broch were pushing for a half time lead and Marc Lawrence found Marc Dickson on the overlap but as he tried to tee up his teammate the cross was deflected behind for a corner. From the ensuing kick Ryan Cowie whipped the ball in and as the ball pinged about it seemed to hit Bryan Hay and flew over the bar much to the relief of the home team. On the stroke of half time another Ryan Cowie corner was cleared to Grant Noble and his shot from just inside the box went wide of the upright. Half Time: Turriff United 0 Fraserburgh 0 The second half started with a bang as the Broch stunned the home side with two goals inside the first five minutes. First Grant Noble picked the ball up in the middle of the Turriff half and when there looked like no danger he unleashed a 35 yarder which flew over Main and into the roof of the net.

Three minutes later a corner from the left by Ryan Cowie was swung low into the near post and Bryan Hay arrived unmarked to flick home his first goal of the season. The Broch’s tails were up and Steven Davidson had a chance on 53 minutes after beating his marker he drove into the penalty area but his shot was saved. On 58 minutes and great move between Grant Nobel and Steven Davidson saw the ball returned to Noble and his chip went just wide. Turriff finally created a chance on 63 minutes when Joe Barbour flapped at a cross with the Broch defence blocking Aaron McKenna’s first effort and then Barbour redeemed himself from McKenna’s second effort. Turriff were piling on the pressure in the final ten minutes having made several forward substitutions and one of those Leszek Nowosielski fired a shot just wide of the Broch goal from inside the box. On 88 minutes a corner from the left by Andy MacAskill was whipped into the six yard box but headed over by Cammy Bowden. Two minutes later the same combination this time worked to perfection as Bowden bulleted home MacAskill’s cross to give the home side some hope. The Broch defence stood firm however in the last few minutes as Turriff tried to force a draw which they would not have merited on the balance of play. Full Time: Turriff United 1 Fraserburgh 2 Turriff United: Kevin Main, Lewis Davidson, Robbie Allan, Craig MacAskill, Cammy Bowden, Artjoms Kuznecovs, Aaron McKenna, Paul Young, Nick Gray (Allen Mackenzie 62), Andrew MacAskill, Gary McGowan. Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Final Saturday 10th October 2015 Inverurie Loco Works v Fraserburgh, Christie Park, Huntly A dominant second half display was enough to earn Fraserburgh the Aberdeenshire Cup for a second year in a row. The Broch were deserved victors by 2-0 at Christie Park, Huntly. It was a final that had been crying out for a goal until defender Ryan Christie provided it in stunning fashion by sending a superb 30 yarder into the bottom corner of the net. The Bellslea men looked comfortable in their lead thereafter and they sealed manager Mark Cowie’s first trophy since taking over in April when substitute Steven Davidson headed home a second goal three minutes after coming on. It was no more than the Broch merited having looked the hungrier side throughout with Inverurie Locos unable to mount any period of sustained pressure. Fraserburgh become the first club to retain the trophy since Aberdeen in the 2000s, impressively Cowie’s side did not concede a goal throughout the tournament. Christie missed last year’s triumph over Buckie Thistle and the defender was thrilled to come up with the goal that put his side well on the way to repeating last year’s success. “I was back training by last year’s final but I didn’t make it back for the game. It was a bit unfortunate bit it was great to be involved this time around.” “The goal seemed to take a bit of a deflection but over the 90 minutes I think we deserved to win. People say we’re a cup team but I’ll take that every season, if we win one every year that would be excellent.” With the league title virtually impossible for either side to attain this season this game marked a great opportunity for both sides to get some silverware on the board. There was precious little to separate the sides going into the game with Fraserburgh just one point ahead of their Garioch rivals in the table and this was reflected in a first half which had little of note to talk about.

The Broch showed some early warning signs with Grant Noble shooting side from Graham Johnston’s delivery before a threatening cross from Bryan Hay was knocked behind by Ryan Broadhurst.

After a quiet start Locos gradually began to impose themselves on the game and their first chance came when John Maitland’s cross found forward Andrew Hunter but his header was gratefully received by Joe Barbour. Another fine chance came the way of Locos on 20 minutes with captain Neil McLean’s deep cross sitting up perfectly for a first time effort from David Ross but he ballooned his shot over. Half Time: Inverurie Loco Works 0 Fraserburgh 0 The second half got off to a quicker start with Broch looking the hungrier side in the early stages missing two early chances. First Russell McBride’s free kick found Ryan Christie inside the box and he forced a great save by Scott Mathieson. Then from a Graham Johnston set piece which he picked out Grant Noble but his effort shaved the post. The Broch finally struck on 57 minutes when the ball found its way to Christie in the middle of the pitch and he strode forward before unleashing a cracking low effort past Mathieson from 30 yards with the slight aid of a deflection. Although Locos had some chances to equalize with Hunter’s shot excellently tipped wide by Joe Barbour before McLean’s strike drifted just over it was the Broch who made sure of the destination of the trophy with a second goals on 85 minutes. Johnston’s corner to the back post found Steven Davidson all alone to nod home and continue the Broch’s success in the competition. Full Time: Inverurie Loco Works 0 Fraserburgh 2 Inverurie Loco Works: Scott Mathieson, Stephen Jeffrey (off 78), John Maitland, Mark Soutar, Ross Anderson , Ryan Broadhurst, David Ross (off 66), Neil McLean, Andy Hunter, Martin Bavidge, Joe McCabe (off 74).
