Car set alight atModimolle

The Modimolle police are investigating a caseof malicious damage to property after a car wasallegedly set alight in the informal settlementnear Modimolle.

The owner alleges that her car was set alightin the early hours of Thursday, 24 September ather son’s home in extension 13.

The car belongs to local traditionalpractitioner Vinya Johanna Mogotlane, wholives in Extension 10.

Mogotlane told The BEAT that she hadbought the car and given it to her son to enablehim to drive her to appointments.

She said that she received a call from her son,who informed her that the car had beenpartially burned.

Mogotlane’s son reportedly woke up after hesmelled smoke coming from outside his house,and upon investigation found the back of thecar engulfed in sheets of flame. Swift actionmanaged to quench the flames before the carwas irreparably damaged.

Mogotlane said that there are people whohave a personal vendetta against her family,and is of the opinion that this was one of those

Mzamane Ringane people’s attempts to hurt them.She said that she saved hard for that car, and

that it is painful for the family to see it beingdestroyed like that.

Mogotlane said that this was the secondmisfortune to befall the family this year. Herson was allegedly attacked in his car earlier thisyear.

“It will be difficult for me to fix this carbecause the amount of money that is requiredto repair it, is too much and it is not ensured. Ibought this car to make my work easier, butthen someone decided to set it on fire. I believethe person who did this was intending to burnmy car to ashes. If my son hadn’t woken upquickly, it would have been completelydestroyed,” she said.

Samuel Moshebi Mofokeng, who also liveswith the family in Extension 10, said thatthey are all in emotional pain because of theincident.

Mofokeng said that he hopes that thosewho are responsible for these deeds will becaught.

Warrant Officer James Findlay confirmedthat a case of malicious damage to propertyhas been opened and that investigations areunderway.

A man in Thabazimbi was remanded topolice custody after making a briefappearance before the local magistrate’scourt on Wednesday, 23 September. Thesuspect was arrested in connection with themurder of Minkie William Seduwa inRegorogile section on Sunday, 20September.Frans Mashagoane (38) allegedly stabbed

to death 32-year old Seduwa, who alsoresides in the area.Thabazimbi police spokesperson

Constable Moshira Modise said thataccording to the information the policereceived, the two had a fight over a womanat their place of residence before themurder. She said that the suspect was afriend and the supervisor of the deceased.The two were both working at a constructioncompany that is responsible for the buildingof a mortuary for the Thabazimbi LocalHospital.Mashangoane is expected back in court this

week as his case was postponed for formalbail application. The deceased was buried onSaturday, 26 September, in BotlokwaMmatseke Section outside Polokwane.

Modimolle police reaches out tothe local community

The police in Modimolle has issued awarning to the community regarding a newcriminal activity targeting drivers. Policespokesperson Warrant Officer JamesFindlay said that the suspects are believedto travel in two cars, a Corsa and a Golf,which they use to rob unsuspecting drivers.Findlay said that the suspects indicate to

their target that they have a flat wheel, anddrive off when the victim stops to checkwhat is wrong. Warrant Officer Findlay saidthat other suspects in another car wouldcome up from behind and rob the drivers.Community members are warned to be on

the lookout for the suspects.In a separate case the police seeks help

from members of the public to track andconfiscate goods which have been stolenand possibly sold, after the arrest of a manwho was hitchhiking to Mookgophong onTuesday, 22 September.Warrant Officer Findlay said that the

The convener of the Economic freedomFighters (EFF) in the Bela-Bela Sub-Region, Sello Mosweu, had the chargesagainst him dropped when he appearedbefore the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Courton Wednesday, 23 September.Mosweu was among a group of people

who were arrested for an allegedtrespassing incident on 15 March 2015,and spent two nights in the police’sholding cells, which he said felt likeforever. He told The BEAT that thecharges were dropped after thecomplainants failed to presentthemselves for the court hearing.He told The BEAT that the

complainants, Lieutenant-ColonelWilliam Ngobeni and Warrant OfficerSello Mangana, arrested him while hewas asking them how many people hadbeen arrested for the trespassingincident that took place the day before.He also alleged that Colonel Ngobeniassaulted him, and said that the arrestwas unlawful as he was not part of theoriginal group.

Bela-Bela municipalitydenies water crisis

Fears of a water shortage in Bela-Bela haverun rampant after several householdsreported that they have had no watersupplied to them for several days.The first incidents were reported on Friday

Themunicipal spokesperson, MatomeSebelebele, denied that the town is facedwith a water shortage and said that watersupply to certain areas in the town had beentemporarily cut off due to reservoirmaintenance and will return during the

DA Councillor Kobus van der Merweconfirmed that the cut offs weremaintenance related and said that theproblem could be resolved by Tuesdayafternoon.

“There was a maintenance related to thereservoirs’ water pumps but this has beenidentified and is currently being repaired.Water supply should be returned to normalthis afternoon,” he told press on Tuesday.At the time of going to press it was notconfirmed if water had been restored to thearea.

High tensions at Modimollecommunity meeting

Tensions were high during the meetingbetween the Modimolle Local Municipalityand members of the community onWednesday, 23 September.The municipality was addressing the

community at the Mayor’s Parlour,following the 7 September march by localresidents who demanded jobs and servicedelivery, among their list of grievances.The meeting was initially scheduled for

15:00, but then started half an hour late dueto disagreements between the two parties onhow the proceedings should be carried out.After the situation went back to normal,

Mayor Kgaretja Lekalakala responded tothe memorandum of demands according tothe copy that was submitted by thecommunity.Responding to the community’s concerns

about the mushrooming Somalis andPakistanis tuck shops in the area, MayorLekalakala said non-complying businesseswould be investigated.She stated that compliance is not limited

to foreign nationals, and further stated thatall residents should meet all legalrequirements if they wanted to runbusinesses.The mayor said singling out foreigners

would be an unfair discrimination and alsounconstitutional.

On the issue of the Lillian Ngoyi Bridgewhich collapsed several years ago and hasnot been repaired, Mayor Lekalakala said acontractual dispute which has been on-going, has been finally resolved and statedthat a new contractor will be appointed torebuild the bridge.Another big issue on the memorandum

was the appointment of a private watermeter-reading company by the municipality.Mayor Lekalakala said the involvement of

a private company was an internalarrangement from within the municipality,to enhance revenue.She said without a sufficient collection of

revenue, the municipality was bound tocollapse.Community members also demanded that

Murray & Roberts must hire Modimolleresidents as they will be working on localroads.Tensions ran high again as residents felt

dissatisfied about the response they gotfrom the municipality regarding jobcreation.The community resolved that they will be

applying for another march, threateningthat they would shut down the municipalityuntil their concerns are given attention.The community leaders indicated that

they will not resort to any form ofviolence, but they will fight a peacefulbattle until their grievances are properlyaddressed.

The Limpopo Provincial Detectives’ Teammade a breakthrough in arresting five suspectsin connection with a murder and robbery thattook place at Motlopi Lodge in Thabazimbi onFriday, 18 September. Two of the suspects werearrested on Saturday, 26 September, while theothers were arrested on Monday, 28 September.

Thabazimbi police spokesperson ConstableMoshira Modise said that the suspects arebelieved to have attacked a couple in theirfarmhouse. Petronella Res (60) was shot andkilled while her husband Bruno (73) wasinjured.

Alleged farm attackers arrestedLizzy Bapela The two suspects who were arrested first,

Dickson Moyo (31) and Amos Munyai (26)appeared before the Thabazimbi Magistrate’sCourt on Monday, 28 September and the casewas postponed to Thursday, 8 October for bailapplication. The other suspects were due incourt on Wednesday, 30 September, and theirnames will be released once they haveappeared in court.

Constable Modise said that among the threemore recently arrested suspects, two of themare a couple while the third one is an illegalimmigrant.

She said that investigations on the matter arecontinuing and more arrests in connection withthe case could be made.

11-year old stabbedmultiple times withbeer bottlesAn 11-year old boy, who could not benamed, has been taken to hospital after analleged stabbing incident at TiisetsoPrimary School in Radium outside of Bela-Bela.

According to the boy’s mother the incidenthappened during school hours onWednesday 23 September.

She told The BEAT that her son had beencelebrating Heritage Day with otherlearners when three of the older learners, allof whom were said to be boys older than13, demanded that he go out and buy liquor.

It is alleged that he was attacked by thethree learners a short while after he hadreturned with the liquor.

According to the mother the three boys

Justin Steyn broke empty liquor bottles they had beendrinking out of and proceeded to stab himmultiple times. He suffered several stabwounds on both arms, legs, his back andone on his forehead.

The mother claimed that she was called tothe scene by her sister who works at theschool where she met with her and policeofficers. She claimed that the boys have notbeen seen since the incident and that shetook her son home to treat his wounds.

“The police did not help us to take him toa clinic and I had to treat him at homemyself. We were only able to take him to ahospital in Hammanskraal the followingday,” she said.

At the time of going to press, no criminalcharges have been laid and the school couldnot be reached for further comment. Theboy remains in a stable condition.

A man was sentenced to 12 months’imprisonment for reckless driving when heappeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’sCourt Friday, 18 September. The 24-year-old Molefe Amos Mose’s arrest follows anincident on 7 September 2014. Moseallegedly ran a stop sign and crashed hisgreen Toyota Conquest into another vehiclehead-on, leading to the hospitalization ofthe other car’s passengers.* Adriaan Kleynhaans was recently

sentenced to three years imprisonment forpresenting forged documents. He wasarrested after the police received acomplaint on the afternoon of 7 July 2015that someone was trying to defraud theVodacom store. Police spokesperson MariaMaleto said that on their arrival the suspect

month of imprisonment or a fine of R300 forassault. Constable Maleto said that the suspecthad assaulted his sister-in-law’s child onThursday, 17 September and left when themother confronted him. She added that thesuspect returned after a while and hit thecomplainant with a broom. The complainantsustained injuries and was taken to thehospital for treatment.* Martin Barnard (58) was fined R500 or

five months’ imprisonment for theft. He wasarrested by a security guard for stealing atShoprite. The suspect went past the pay pointwithout paying for his groceries, and wasstopped by the store’s security guard. Thepolice arrested and charged him for theft. Hewas found to be in possession of dog food andwors, and the items were seized.

Twelve accused of murder out onR1 000 bail

The twelve people who have been accusedof the murder of an unknown man inSelokeng in Pienaarsrivier were released onbail of R1 000 each on Friday, 25September.

Thokozile Nkosi (48), Johannes Semetsing(35), Mapule Mabusela, Tlou Sebatjane(52), Jack Nkwana (28), Mpho Moseamedi(25), John Chabalala (32), NhlenyaneMashilo (48), Amos Matlala (35), RachelTshabalala (26), Reuben Chabalala andCollen Chabalala (21) were arrested for theiralleged involvement in the murder of a manwho has not been formally identified.

The incident occurred on Friday, 28 Augustwhen the man, who has been identified onlyas William, was allegedly tied up and badly

Paramedics from the provincial EmergencyServices and members of the Bela-Bela Policerushed to the scene shortly after the event wasreported.

Witnesses claimed that William was accusedof stealing from the community and eventhreatened police and paramedics when theyarrived.

The victim was unconscious when theparamedics arrived, and died shortly after hisarrival at a Polokwane hospital.

The twelve accused are to reappear at theBela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 27October.

Modimolle RDP fraud case set for trial

Modimolle citizens heaved a sigh of reliefon Tuesday 22 September, when the courtannounced the trial date for the case againstModimolle Local Municipality officialAndrew Kgati and Councillor JimmyMoropeng.The two are now expected to appear in the

regional court on 22 October.In the courtroom, Kgati was sitting

alongside his co-accused Moropengthroughout the court proceedings.Moropeng and Kgati were arrested in July

this year for their alleged involvement inthe illegal sale of an RDP house.Both the accused initially appeared in the

regional court on Monday 21 September,with the court taking a decision to postponethe matter until Tuesday.The legal representatives of Moropeng

and Kgati were not available on Monday,which is why the case had to be postponedto Tuesday.On Monday members of the community

and EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters)party followers dressed in their traditionalred colours attended the court case.There was however, a low attendance on

Tuesday, with members of both EFF andthe Democratic Alliance (DA) conspicuousby their absence.Modimolle Development and

the public to attend the trial on 22 October.Members of the public were carrying

placards that read “Down with Fraud”, “25Years in jail”, “Stop Corruption”, “You goto jail” and “You sold my RDP”.Without singing or any form of chanting,

the community members converged outsidethe Modimolle Magistrate Court and allagreed to attend the trial on 22 October.Speaking at the meeting which served to

give feedback to the community’smemorandum of demands, ModimolleMayor Kgaretja Lekalakala confirmed thatKgati has been suspended by theModimolle Local Municipality.

Phagameng High Schoolcelebrates heritage

Phagameng High School in Modimollehosted an event on Tuesday 22September, to celebrate HeritageMonth.September is widely known as

Heritage Month, with South Africansall over the country celebrating theirdiverse cultures on 24 September.Phagameng High School celebrated

this day two days before the actualdate, since 24 September was a publicday.Educators and learners displayed their

cultural attires when they attended thisfun filled event, which was held at theschool’s premises.Members of the audience were

entertained with drama, poetry, comedy,Tsonga traditional dance and a sterlingperformance by the much celebratedcultural group Makubenjalo.The school’s Principal Leah Senona

said they hosted this event to celebrateSouth Africa’s heritage, and to alsoteach the learners about their cultures.Senona said the event also gave the

young people a chance to learn abouttheir traditional clothing, music anddance.She said it is important for those

learners to know their cultural identityand enjoy their inheritance.

Teaching union SADTU’s representatives inthe Waterberg District say that they supportthe consensus that was reached between theDepartment of Basic Education and teacherunions to postpone the writing of theAnnual National Assessment (ANA) untilthe first week of February 2016.SADTU chairperson in the Waterberg Ally

Matlala is going to representMogalakwena and the WaterbergDistrict at the provincial level in thesame categories.

During an interview with The BEAT,Matlala said that they are very excitedabout the awards.

“We want to thank the educators whoentered on short notice. It was theirfirst time, but they managed to come intop anyway,” said Matlala. “Thisshows that our educators arecommitted and it is also a motivationto the others that if we work hard wewill get recognition.”

Church members and leaders from varioussections of Modimolle gathered on PeterNchabeleng Community Hall on Saturday, 19September to seek God’s divine interventionfollowing the ever-escalating cases of policekillings.Modimolle Ministers Fraternal chairperson

Malesela Mosima said they saw the need toorganise this prayer because of the disturbingvicious attacks on police officers.Mosima said they felt that it is only through

God’s intervention that the attacks on policeofficers can be brought to a halt.The Victory and Salvation Ministry founder

said they are adamant that God will indeedhear their prayers and will also respond.Mosima referred to a previous situation where

Modimolle residents were being tormented byserial killings of children.He testified that the alleged serial killer was

arrested after the community came togetherand asked for God’s intervention through asolemn prayer. Apostle Simon Moima ofGrace Miracle Soul Harvest delivered apowerful sermon, before leading thecongregation in prayer.The theme of Pastor Moima’s sermon was

“Victory is guaranteed in oneness.”The preacher emphasized that God will hear

their prayers and will indeed change the currentsituation.

Lieutenant Colonel Kiba Kekana of theModimolle SAPS thanked all the religiousleaders and church members who attended thisevent.Lt Col Kekana said the police officers have

been given guns and bulletproof vests toprotect themselves while on duty, but statedthat without God’s protection they will not beable to defeat the escalating cases of policekillings.He said that police officers are not enemies,

but they are also part of the broader society.Lt Col Kekana said once a police officer has

been killed, a large portion of the communitywould be left vulnerable to crime.He sent out a clarion call to all churches and

members of the community to continuepraying for the police officers and othermembers of various security services.Before delivering a vote of thanks, Pastor

Kemaketse Keagile asked the congregation toobserve a moment of silence, in remembranceof all those who lost their lives while servingand protecting to community.More than 60 police officers have been

killed on duty this year, and this week inDurban two police officers who were servinga protection order were stripped of theirweapons and uniforms, driven 5 km away intheir own police van, and shot. One of theofficers died on the scene while the other was,at the time of going to press, still fighting forher life in a Durban hospital.

Former Modimolle legend soccer teamTerrors are now in the fitness line, gearingup for the coming season of the ABCMotsepe league.

The team played several friendly games inBela-Bela to train their players, who wereselected during trials that were held atSunfa Stadium recently.

The team played with Spa Park United onSunday, 26 September at the Spa ParkSoccer Fields and gave them a whipping of6-1 in the first leg of the games, beatingthem 5-1 in the second leg. The boys sharedthe field with their teams’ masters, whereTerrors FC’s Masters lost 5 goals to 8 ofSpa Park United Masters.

Meanwhile, Terrors FC celebratedHeritage Day by playing with a team fromSoshanguve, Alie’s Tigers and lost 2-1 and1-0 in both legs of the games. Modimolle athletes dominateMookgophong marathon

Modimolle athletes taught their Mookgophongcounterparts a thing or two about marathon,when they scooped most prizes during theWord Saint Worshipers Church Fun Run onThursday 24 September.

Athletes from Mookgophong, Modimolle andMokopane took part in 5km, 15km and 21kmmarathon categories.

There were also sub-categories of junior,senior and veterans, with the winners receivingtrophies, t-shirts, caps and cash prizes.

Other participants opted for a fun walk as partof the activities for the day.

The athletes from Modimolle’s Addicted toLife Club excelled at the marathon,representing both the club and their town well.

Marathon organiser Abbey Mokgahlane saidthey saw fit to host this marathon to helppeople with mind and body exercises.

He said the main purpose of this marathonwas to promote good health and to also raisefunds for the church.

“We need to preach the word of God, but atthe same time we plant the seed of exercising.We are a small church in Mookgophong, so weare also doing a fund-raiser. We would like tohave a bigger building for our congregation,but our overall objective is to promote a goodhealth for the community”, he said.

Mokgahlane thanked AVBOB, NaboomToyota, Baboos and Dr. Thapelo Phahladirafor their contribution in organising this event.

Mookgophong citizen Solly Maphologelasaid the event was interesting, and also

encouraged young people to come in largenumbers in next year’s edition of the marathon.

He believes this will help the youth to keephealthy, and to also stay away from drugs andalcohol.

Mookgophong-based General Practitioner DrThapelo Phahladira said sport and health goeshand in hand, and that is one of the reasonswhy she partnered with the church in thismarathon.

She encouraged people to take part in sportsas it helps to keep psychologically andphysically healthy.

AVBOB representative René Pallas said hercompany has managed to create a goodrelationship with the community ofMookgophong.

She said they will continue to assist localcommunities in any way possible, as it is partof their social responsibility.
