Family therapy helps parents who are experiencing conflict in their relationship, siblings who are not getting along, children who have school problems, and family members who suffer from chronic mental illness, among many other issues that affect the entire family. When families seek out therapy, the therapist teaches members how to function together and as individuals, strengthening the relationships between members so they can solve their problems together. Further, family therapists teach family members how to identify and resolve conflicts in a healthy way.

Family therapy works best when all members are willing to attend and actively participate; it is essential that each family member takes responsibility for problems and agrees to change problematic behaviors. Some therapy sessions may require certain family members to complete homework outside of therapy, such as communicating in a different way in effort to improve relationships in the home.
