Preface

Today is 18 Dh ul-h ijjah ,1 th e day wh en the Prophet () st ayed at Gh adīr Kh um after h is ret urn from Hajjat-ul-wadā‘2 to Medina. Surro un ded by the Comp anion s (), he declared while ra isin g the han d of ‘Alī a l-Murtadā () :

فَع والهكُنْتُ م نموالهم يل. Wh oever ha s me a s his master ‘Al ī is h is master.

This was the declaration o f ‘Al ī’ s spirit ual sovereignty an d it s uncon ditional acceptance is bin din g on believer s ti ll the Day of Judgem ent. It clear ly prov es that anyone who den ies ‘Alī’s spir itual sovereignty in fact denies the Prophet’ s sp ir itual sovereignty. This most h um ble fo llo wer of the Prophet () fe lt that some peop le deny this r eality partly o ut o f ignorance an d p artly o ut of prejudice , wh ich is sp readin g unnecessary ten sion an d disun ity in the Muslim comm unity. Un der the c ircumstan ces I tho ught it necessary to wr ite t wo pamph let s on the issue of sovereignty an d leader ship : one tit led as Th e Ghad īr Decla ration an d the other tit led The Awa ited Imām Mahd ī (). The fo rmer is design ed to

clar ify the stat us of ‘Alī () as the op ener of the sp ir itual sovereignty an d the latter is design ed to descr ibe the st atus of Imām Mah dī (), the seal of sp ir itual sovereignty. The m ain p urpo se is to r emove the do ubts that have gathered aro un d the issue an d to m ake the Muslim s aware of the reality. The sp ir itual sovereignty of ‘Al ī an d Mah dī (علیھما السالم) are p roved by the authentic had īth-book s of Ah l-us-Sunn ah wal- Jamā ‘ah, in the form of contin uo us tr adition s, (that is, there is un interrupted ev iden ce to en dor se th e so un dness o f the tr adition s). In the f ir st p amphlet I h ave included 51 tradition s wh ich are full authenticated an d ref eren ced. The reason for this n um ber is that this year I h ave completed 51 years of my lif e. Therefore, in order to gain blessin gs I hav e h um bly used th is r elat ionsh ip as wa sī lah ( intermediation ) in the presence of ‘Alī (), so th at this meagre ef fort is accepted. (Āmīn)

In this p reface I want to c lar ify the three types of legacy ( inher itance) han ded do wn by the Ho ly Prophet (): i . The sp irit ual inher itance of ‘un apparent

succession’ (sp ir itual khilāfah ). i i. The political inh eritan ce of ‘extern al caliph ate.’ i i i. The gen eral inher itance of ‘r eligio us caliph ate.’ . The fir st form of inher itance was giv en to the

mem ber s of the Prophet’s fam ily . . The secon d form of inh eritan ce was given to the

r ightly-guided caliph s. . The third form of inheritance was giv en to other

Compan ion s an d the Successor s (). The ‘unapp arent succession’ is that fo untainhead of

Prophet Muh ammad’s succession which not on ly safeguarded sp irit ual ach ievem ents an d hidden blessin gs of I slam , but also intro duced the Umm ah to sp ir itual sovereignty, sa intly r ank of qu tb an d refo rmation thro ugh wh ich the Umm ah ben efited sp ir itually.

The ‘external caliphate’ is that fo untainh ead of Prophet Muhammad’s succession wh ich led to the

practical domin ance of I slam as well as it s establishment as a practical sy stem . This lead to gov ernan ce an d st ability of the Prophet’ s d īn. It p aved the way for the creation of dif fer ent I slamic states an d practically introduced the sha rī‘ah o f Prophet Muhammad () as a wo rld sy stem.

The ‘gen eral caliphate’ is the fo untainh ead of Prophet Muh ammad’s succession wh ich promoted the I slam ic teachin gs an d proved the importance o f r ighteo us deeds in the Muslim comm unity. It not on ly helped in the preservation of kno wledge an d p iety amon g th e Ummah but a lso in the spread an d prop agation of I slam ic morality. The three types of caliphate m ay be summed up as:

i . Succession of sp ir itual sov ereignty. i i. Caliph ate of gov ernan ce.

i i i. Caliph ate of guidan ce. Sh āh Walī Allāh (تعاىل عليه محة اهللا (ر , a great scho lar of the

and inner enlightenment from h im. Th ese a re the members o f his family and o ther specific p ersona lities. The second g roup is o f those who received th e inheritance o f externa l enlightenment from him in the form of v irtuou sness, and gu idance. Th ese a re his sen io r Companion s, eg the fou r ca liph s and the ten Companion s who received the great n ews (of parad ise from the Prophet Muhammad ()). The third g roup is o f those who received ind ividua l b lessing s from h im in the fo rm o f kno wledg e and piety. Th ese a re the peop le who were steeped in the v irtu e o f īh sān ( selflessness), l ike Ana s and Abū Hu rayrah (رضي اهللا تعالى عنھما) , and the peop le who came later.’ Th e th ree fo rms of inheritance o we their o rig in to th e finality o f messengership .1

It may be noted that this division is based on conv enience an d sp ecial stat us whereas each category of inher itance shares th e qualities of other inher itances of the Prophet (). Each catego ry has, in som e sh ape or form, a re lation sh ip with the other. v In govern ance, Abū Bakr as-Siddīq ( ) was the

immediate dep uty of the Prophet (). v In sp ir ituality an d sainthoo d ‘Al ī al-Murtadā () was

h is dir ectly appointed dep uty. v In guidance a ll o f his Compan ions an d Caliph s ()

were his immediate dep uties. As a result , after the f inality of proph ethood, thr ee

hor izon s were set up in order to facilitate the eternal contin uity of the Proph et’s () blessin g:

i . The first hor izon is for the political inher itance of the Prophet ().

1. S hāh W al ī Al lāh, at -T afh īmā t -ul -i lāhiyyah (2:8).

Preface

5

i i. The secon d hor izon is for the spir itual inh eritan ce of the Prophet () .

i i i. The th ird horizon is for the educational an d practical inh eritan ce of the Prophet ().

• The po litical inh er itance of the Prophet () was kno wn as kh ilā fah rāsh idah (the r ightly-guided caliphate) .

• The sp ir itual inh er itance of the Prophet () was kno wn as wilāyah ( spir itual sovereignty) an d imāmah ( sp irit ual leader ship) .

• The education al an d practical inh er itance of the Prophet () cam e to be kno wn as guidance an d honesty. Therefore, the f ir st r ecipient of po litical inh eritan ce

was Abū Bakr as-Siddīq (), the f ir st r ecipient of spirit ual inh er itance was ‘Alī a l-Murtadā (), an d the f irst r ecip ient s of education al an d practical inher itance were the Comp anion s (). So all of th em were immediate caliph s (h eads o f their p articular categories). There is no form of contr adict ion or r ivalry bet ween the three .

The secon d important po int to be noted is that the true st atus of the three dif fer s with regards to var io us issues, such as:

1. ‘External caliphate’ is the po lit ical off ice of Islam . The ‘un apparent caliphate’ is exclusiv ely a

spirit ual off ice . 2. Th e ‘ external caliph ate’ is an e lective an d

con sultative p rocess. The ‘unapp arent caliph ate’ is an inherent an d

select ive act. 3. The ‘ external’ caliph is e lected by the p eople .

The ‘unapp arent’ caliph is se lected by Go d. 4. The po litical caliph is e lected.

The spir itual caliph is selected. 5. Th is is the reason that the fir st caliph Abū Bakr as-

Siddīq () was e lected on the basis o f ‘Um ar Fārūq’ s () p roposal an d the con sensus of the majo rity of the p ublic . But the e lection of the fir st Imām of sp ir itual

sovereignty — ‘Al ī al-Murtadā () — requir ed neither any bo dy ’s propo sal nor a con sen sus.

6. Demo cracy was to be der ived from the caliph ate, wh ich is why the Proph et () did not anno unce who will be the caliph after h im. Spir it ual leader sh ip was an act of assignm ent; therefore, the Proph et () declared it in the valley of Ghadīr Kh um.

7. Th e Prophet () left the e lection of th e caliph to the will of the peop le , but the spir it ual leader (wal ī) was selected by himself by the will o f Allāh.

8. External caliph ate is established to perfect the wo rldly sy stem.

Sp ir itual leader ship is established to beautify it with the heaven ly ch arm an d grace.

9. Caliphate m akes men just. Sp ir itual leadersh ip m akes them p erfect.

10. Caliphate is conf ined to the floor (earth). Sp ir itual leader sh ip exten ds to the Throne (of

Allāh). 11. Caliphate is in effective witho ut off ic ia lly tak in g

off ice. Sp ir itual leader ship is ef fectiv e even without

takin g off ice . 12. Th is is p ro bably th e reason why caliphate was

entrusted to the Ummah, an d Sp ir itual leader sh ip was entrusted to the fam ily of

the Prophet ().

Therefore, there is no escap in g (room for th e den ial of ) political leadersh ip (khilāfah ; caliphate) nor of sp ir itual sovereignty (wilāyah). The direct caliphate of Abū Bakr as-Siddīq () was established with the con sensus of the Comp anion s () an d is categor ically proven by history. The direct sp ir itual sov ereignty of ‘Alī a l-Murtadā () was anno unced by the Prophet () himself an d is categor ically p roven by muta wāt ir ( un broken chain of)

tradition s. The proof of the caliph ate is the con sensus of the Co mpanion s () an d the proof of sp irit ual sovereignty (wilāyah) is the declaration of the Prophet () . One who denies the caliph ate in fact den ies h istory an d con sensus, an d on e who den ies the sp irit ual sov ereignty (wilāyah) den ies the Prophet’ s declaration. Therefore, both the caliphate an d the sp ir itual leadersh ip are inescapable realities. Wh at is urgently needed is a c lear un der stan din g of the r eality of the t wo in stitut ions in order to present conform ity r ather than diff eren ce ( clash) bet ween the t wo .

It sho uld be un der stood that just as the external caliphate started with the right ly-guided caliph s an d its blessin gs were passed on to the r ighteo us an d just ruler s, sim ilar ly the unapp arent caliphate ( sp irit ual sovereignty) st arted with ‘Alī a l-Murtadā () an d it s blessin gs were passed on to the mem ber s of the Prophet’ s fam ily an d perfected saints of the Umm ah. By mean s of the declaration — والهم يلفَع والهكُنْتُ م نم (who ever has m e as his master ‘Al ī is h is master) — an d — و ديعلي بع ن م م يك ل (‘Al ī is yo ur sp ir itual leader after me) — the Prophet () p ublic ly declared ‘Al ī () as the op ener of sp ir itual sovereignty.

It sho uld be noted that the relation ship with the Chief Help er (Ghawth-ul-A‘zam ) is in f act a chapter an d a r ay of the r elation ship with ‘Al ī al-Murtadā ( ).

Sh āh I smā‘ī l Dih lawī h as c lar if ied this po int:

“‘Alī al-Murtadā () a lso has super ior ity in a sin gle dimen sion over Abū Bakr as-Siddīq () an d ‘Umar Fārūq (). This sup erior ity lies, f ir stly, in the greater n um ber of his fo llo wer s. Secon dly , all categories of wilāyah ( sp ir itual sovereignty) fro m his day til l the en d of tim e are only po ssible thro ugh h im. He has a say in the k in gdom of the kin gs an d the leader ship of the leader s an d this is not h idden f rom those who are f amiliar with the wo rld of an gels… Mo st sp ir itual ch ain s are direct ly deriv ed from ‘Alī a l-Murtadā (). ‘Spirit ual sovereignty’ (wilā yah), within the Prophet Muh ammad’s () Umm ah, who se fo untainhead is ‘Al ī a l-Murtadā (), is directly sh ared by Fāt im ah, Hassan an d Hussein () an d then through them it was passed do wn to the t welve Imām s ( spirit ual leaders) , the last leader bein g Imām Mah dī (). And there is another way clo se to spiritua l sovereign ty and th is is th e way o f a ll ca tego ries of sa ints o f all levels. the sou rce of a ll b lessing fo r even the h igh ranking sain ts ( such as qut ubs and n ujabā’ becau se they a re th e centre of all sp iritua l activity) and no one can survive without a link with the h eadquarters.1

Sh aykh Ahmad Sarh an dī (رحمة اهللا تعالى علیھ) believes that Imām Mah dī () will sh are spir it ual sovereignty (wilāyah ) with ‘Alī a l-Murtadā (). The gist of the discussion is that the Proph et’s declaration at Ghadīr Kh um p roved forev er that ‘Alī’ s spirit ual sov ereignty is in fact the Prophet Muh ammad’s spirit ual sovereignty. As the door of prophethoo d was c lo sed after th e Ho ly Proph et () , Allāh () has op ened new aven ues for the contin uation of the Proph et’s blessin gs ti ll th e Day of Judgement. Som e were blessed by an extern al stat us wh ilst other s by an internal status. The h idden aven ue is kno wn as sp irit ual sovereignty an d ‘Al ī a l-Murtadā () was its f ir st Imām . Then this chain of sovereignty was passed do wn to the Prophet’ s fam ily an d f inally to the t welve Imāms. Besides the t welv e Imām s there ar e thousan ds of other pio us in div iduals who r each ed the stat us of sainthoo d. They h ave h eld high rank s of sainthoo d ( such as gha wth, qu tub) an d hav e enlightened the liv es of million s of peop le thro ugh the intern al l ight of wilāyah , takin g th em o ut of ignoran ce an d astray . Yet all of th em gained th eir spir itual st atus f rom the sp ir itual sovereignty of ‘Al ī a l-Murtadā (), be it directly or in dir ectly. No one was self- suff icient an d in depen dent from th e wilāyah of ‘Al ī a l-Murtadā ( ) an d th is chain will contin ue up to the Day o f Judgement until the app earance of the last Imām (sp irit ual leader ) an d the centre of sp ir itual leadersh ip. He will be Imām Muh ammad Mah dī (), the t welfth Imām an d the last caliph. In his person , the external an d the un apparent caliphates wh ich r an paralle l to each other will come to gether. He will be the sp ir itual as well as the po litical

inher itor, an d h e will be the last person to ho ld the offices of kh ilā fah an d wilāyah . Anyone who denies Imām Mah dī () will deny both the external an d unapparent form s of I slam. This will be the climax of the expo sure an d disclosure of the Prophet Muhamm ad’s blessin g. This is due to the f act that, he will be nam ed Muhamm ad an d he will also r esem ble the Ho ly Prophet () in moral excellence. So the wor ld sho uld kno w that this Imām is the r ecipient of both the external an d intern al inher itance o f the Proph et’s blessin gs. That is why th e Prophet () said, “ Anyone who den ies Mah dī will be a disbeliev er.” At that t ime, he will be th e fo cus of all saints on earth, an d, bein g the leader o f Proph et Muh ammad’s Umm ah, proph et ‘Īsā () will offer his prayer beh in d him an d in this way , he will anno unce h is leader sh ip to the who le wo rld. So we sho uld r ealize that ‘Al ī al-Murtadā () an d Mah dī () o f the earth an d h eaven s — the father an d the son — are both Allāh’ s fr ien ds an d the Proph et’s inher itors. It is therefore comp ulsory on ev ery believer to ackno wledge their exceptional status. May Allāh () giv e us the ability to gain blessin gs from these fo untainheads of wilāyah .
