440 SHAKESPEARE QUARTERLY

tions. The commentary on the 4I items in Case i, "School in Shakespeare's Time", is admirable.

J.G.M.

The Autobiography of Thomas Whythorne (modern spelling edition). Edited by JAMES M. OSBORN. Oxford University Press, i962. Pp. XVi + 24I. $7.00.

The old-spelling edition of this important autobiography was reviewed in SQ, XIII, 339. Now the editor has produced a text in modern spelling for the enjoyment of all who will read. The documentary appendices have not been reprinted. The author glosses (doubtfully) line 4 of the poem about a Priest of Jersey (pp. io9-ii2), "It was a vengeance friar" as ". . . vindictive friar"; perhaps it would come closer to the author's intent to say, "There was a friar for you!" or "A friar if ever there was one" (the second paraphrase is sug- gested by Professor David Hoeniger).
