Preface The 7th International Veterinary Immunology Symposium (7th IVIS) The 7th IVIS took place on July 25–30, 2004, in the Convention Centre of Que ´bec City, Canada. The papers included here are a sample of the 61 invited presentations that comprised the program of 5 Plenary and 10 Concurrent sessions as well as some of the contributions to the 6 Species Sessions and 15 Workshops of the 7th IVIS. The 7th IVIS was the most recent in the series which began with the 1st IVIS in Guelph, Ont., Canada, on July 2–4, 1986, and has been held every 3 years with symposia in Hannover 1988, Budapest 1992, Davis 1995, Ludhiana 1998 and Uppsala 2001. The 8th IVIS will take place in Ouro Preto, Brazil, on August 5–10, 2007. Each IVIS has been held in proximity to the International Congress of Immunol- ogy (ICI) and has been organized under the auspices of the Veterinary Immunology Committee (VIC) of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS). The 7th IVIS also benefited from organiza- tional and material assistance from the 6th IVIS. Both Local (Byram Bridle, Angela Crawley, John Lumsden, Bonnie Mallard, John Prescott, Claudine Raymond, Suminder Sawhney, Shayan Sharif and Patricia Shewen) and International (Cynthia Baldwin, J. Robert Duncan, Caroline Fossum, Philip Griebel, Wayne Hein, Chris Howard, Chieko Kai, Paul Lunn, Ivan Morrison, Mike Murtaugh, George Mutwiri, Jan Naessens, Klaus Nielsen, Mohinder Oberoi, Reinhard Pabst, John Reynolds, Victor Rutten, Armin Saal- mueller, Jean-Pierre Scheerlinck, Gary Splitter, Falko Steinbach and Federico Zuckermann) Advisory Committees made very useful suggestions on the scientific and non-scientific framework of the 7th IVIS. Conference management was the key respon- sibility of Mr. Pierre Lamoureux of the National Research Council of Canada. The Quebec City Conference Centre proved to be an efficient and congenial venue which reflected the abundant regional hospitality. Contributions to the 7th IVIS were made by Gold Sponsors, Merial, Pfizer Animal Health and Silver Sponsors, Fort Dodge and Bioniche. Support was also received from exhibitors Serotec, Pierce Biotechnol- ogy Inc., Cedarlane Laboratories Ltd., VMRD Inc. and Stemcell Technologies Inc. Special gratitude is due to the Chairs and Co-chairs of Plenary, Concurrent, Species and Workshop sessions since the excellent scientific program of the 7th IVIS to a considerable extent reflects their efforts in engaging speakers and organizing the topical contributions. The organizers wish to thank speakers and contributors to Poster, Workshop and Species sessions for creating a high quality program, some of which is reflected in these proceedings. The success of 7th IVIS was ensured by the participation of some 400 registrants from 35 countries who took part enthusiastically in the social and scientific program. www.elsevier.com/locate/vetimm Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology 108 (2005) 1–2 0165-2427/$ – see front matter # 2005 Elsevier B.V.
