Johan BolhuisSenior Design Manager BAM Infraconsult

Johan Bolhuis is a design manager at BAM Infraconsult which is the engineering department of BAM Infra in the Netherlands. He has been a constructor in the past and has done a lot of construction calculations as fabric, utility buildings and infrastructure works as bridges and tunnels. He works now approximately 10 years within BAM as a design manager for infrastructure. He was 5 years responsible for the design of the regional construction of BAM Civil. From this point of view he has a lot of interest in new innovation. Therefore he engineered the first prestressed printed bicycle bridge together with the TU Eindhoven. In his current position he is responsible for the design of the new railway station at Driebergen-Zeist.

Peter Clapham Associate WSP

Peter is a highly experienced Bridges and Structures Engineer with over 40 years’ experience of designing, maintaining, refurbishing and managing a wide range of highway structures, including bridges and retaining walls. These include masonry, timber, FRP, steel and concrete structures on highways, footpaths and open public spaces. Many of the schemes have involved the refurbishment and strengthening of traditionally constructed ageing structures, including concrete bridges, metal bridges, timber footbridges and masonry retaining walls. Peter is a member of ADEPT National Bridges Group concerned with Local Authority highway structures and represents ADEPT on BSi B/525/10 committee concerned with standards for bridges especially Eurocodes. He is also a member of BSi committee B/525/10 WG1 on traffic loading on bridges and is leading the working group drafting the replacement of BS6779-4 for masonry parapets. He leads the ADEPT NW Area Bridge Conference and Greater Manchester Bridges Group.

David Collings Technical Director Consultant Arcadis

David is a Technical Director at consultant Arcadis, he has a wide-ranging experience of major bridge projects in the UK and overseas. David is also a visiting lecturer and researcher on long-span bridges at the University of Surrey. David’s work has included the BCI Award winning UK-Bangladesh friendship Bridge, a multi-span reinforced concrete cantilever bridge over the Meghna River. He has worked in Kuala Lumpur where he led the teams working on several major bridge and projects including the 17km Second Penang Crossing recently awarded the ICE Brunel Prize. In all his work, quality, elegance and constructability are key factors. David is renowned for making the complex simple.

Jesper Falk holds a Master's degree in Surveying & Geodesy from Aalborg University, Denmark, and he has worked at the Consulting Engineering and Mapping company COWI A/S since 2001. Jesper is since 2010 assigned as Head of Section (HoS) for the Geoservices / Surveying section at COWI Denmark and from 2015 also assigned as Market Director in the same section with responsibility for International Sales. Jesper is also involved in sales and development of innovative solutions within Geodata including the inspection platform CVI.

Richard Fish Technical SecretaryBridge Owners Forum

Richard Fish has been the Technical Secretary of the Bridge Owners Forum for nearly ten years and in this capacity is a member of the UK Bridges Board. After over 30 years in Local Government, most of which was spent working on the design, maintenance and construction of bridges, he established his independent consultancy business in 2009 specialising in bridge maintenance and asset management. From 1994 to 2002, he was the Project Manager for the award winning strengthening and widening of the Tamar suspension bridge. He chaired the CSS Bridges Group and the UK Bridges Board from 2005 to 2008.

Matt GreenhalghTechnical and Estimating Engineering DirectorTaziker Industrial

Matthew joined Taziker Industrial Ltd (TI) in 2009, to set up a new Engineering Division as the Technical and Estimating Engineering Director. Matthew plays a pivotal role in the delivery of some of the most prestigious structures in the country with TI, such as The Royal Albert Bridge, Tay Rail Bridge, and The Iron Bridge to name but a few. Matthew graduated from the University of Central Lancashire in 1988, beginning his first industry role at Harrisons Engineering later that same year. Matthew progressed through the ranks during his time at Harrisons and eventually went on to become Managing Director before moving to TI in 2009.

Finn R. Gottfredsen holds a Master's degree in civil engineering from the Technical University of Denmark and a Pd.D. from Aalborg University.Finn has been in COWI since 1997 and has worked mainly within the field of operation and maintenance of major infrastructure facilities. In 2012 he was appointed Project Director. Finn has specialised in inspection and maintenance of concrete structures and has managed a number of projects where collection, processing and presentation of large quantities of inspection data has been a key issue. This has led to an involvement in projects where the collection of inspection data is based on images from 360° cameras and drones/UAVs.

Martin Hardman Bridges & Structures Manager Cumbria County Council

Martin is a Chartered Structural and Chartered Civil Engineer with over 30 years experience in both the public and private sectors. Martin is currently the Bridges and Structures Manager for Cumbria County Council and is responsible for the management of over 3,000 structures, many of which are within the Lake District National Park. Since taking up this post in 2013 he has worked closely with colleagues within the highways service to establish a prioritised, risk based approach to the inspection, assessment and maintenance of the structures asset. Martin has first-hand experience of the devastating effects of major floods in 2005, 2009 and 2015 and was heavily involved in the emergency response to the December 2015 floods in Cumbria. He continues to assume client responsibility for the ongoing infrastructure recovery programme across the county.

Keith Harwood Head of Profession - Bridges and StructuresHertfordshire County Council

Keith Harwood is the Head of Profession and technical lead for highway structures for Hertfordshire County Council. He has many years experience of the management of highway structures including design, construction, assessment and asset management, with a particular interest in modelling techniques for scenario planning and optimisation of maintenance interventions. He is a member of the Adept National Bridges Group, HAMFIG and the Bridge Owner’s Forum.

Chris is Atkins Head of Bridge Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and recipient of the 2016 ICE’s Gold Medal. Chris has led some of Atkins’ most complex bridge projects covering all forms of construction including beam and slab, box girder, cable stay, arch and suspension bridges in reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete and structural steel. Chris is Chairman of the UK BSI bridge committee, Chairman of the UK’s Steel Bridge Group and Chairman of fibUK. A bridge engineer by profession; an amateur mechanic, car/bike/trike enthusiast and horologist in his spare time. After more than 23 years as a local authority civil/structural engineer, Ian moved to the private sector in 2005 as an associate for consultants Pell Frischmann working on the Portsmouth Highways PFI Contract. A resident of the Isle of Wight, he joined Ringway Island Roads as Structures manager in 2015, and currently leads a team of eight working on improvements to the varied stock of bridges and retaining walls.

Joanne joined the Eurovia Graduate Scheme in 2010, part way through her studies at the University of Southampton. After various placements in both contracting and business improvement roles, she joined the Island Roads Structures Team in 2014 and is currently a Project Manager, responsible for the delivery of bridge improvement scheme as part of the contract’s core investment period. Joanne was an ICE President’s Apprentice in 2014/15 and continues to work on innovation strategy within the wider Eurovia Group.

Sam Khan Director for Bridges Rendel

Sam Khan is the Director of Bridges at Rendel and has extensive international experience in the design, project management and construction engineering of major bridge projects, particularly cable-stayed bridges. Sam was the Project Director for the Sydney Metro project, involving a 4.3km long precast segmental viaduct and a complex cable-stayed bridge. His responsibilities have included providing expert advice and value engineering to the principal contractor on the construction methodologies, design and design interface management of the cable stayed bridge and viaduct. Sam’s portfolio of cable supported bridge projects further includes Mersey Gateway, Stonecutters, Queensferry, Phu My and Obhur bridge.

Liz KirkhamNetwork Manager, Gloucestershire County Council. Chair of ADEPT Bridges Group and the United Kingdom Bridges Board

Liz Kirkham is currently Network Manager for Gloucestershire County Council. She has worked in local government continuously since graduating from Liverpool University in 1985. Liz joined Gloucestershire County Council in 1990, having completed her civil engineering graduate training with Hampshire County Council. She became a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1994. She managed Gloucestershire’s bridges for over 15 years until 2014 when she moved into her current role, where she has responsibility for the Asset Management Policy and Strategy for Highways for the County Council. Having recently completed her Institute of Asset Management Certificate and Diploma exams, she has been responsible for delivering an asset management training programme across the whole of the Council’s Highways Department. Liz is chairman of the National Bridges Group of the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transportation (ADEPT), and was recently appointed as chairman of the UK Bridges Board. She was a member of the steering group for the new national Code of Practice for Well Managed Highway Infrastructure.

Dr Prakash KripakaranSenior Lecturer University of Exeter

Dr. Prakash Kripakaran is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter. He has research interests in the areas of bridge hydraulics and scour, structural system identification and bridge performance monitoring. He leads the structural engineering work in an ongoing EPSRC grant titled “Risk Assessment of Masonry Bridges Under Flood Conditions: Hydrodynamic Effects of Debris Blockage and Scour”. This work aims to provide guidance on assessing scour and hydrodynamic effects of debris blockage at masonry bridges during floods. His talk at Bridges 2018 will focus on key findings from this work.

Neil LoudonHead of Structures PolicyHighways England

Neil is currently Head of Structures Policy in Highways England’s Safety Engineering and Standards Directorate. Responsible for technical aspects of structures design and management - research, innovation development, assessment and implementation, standards management and development, database management, technical advice, and industry liaison. Neil has worked for Highways England and predecessor organisations for over 47 years. In the past he has chaired industry groups dealing with concrete, repair and the use of frp. He is currently a member of the Bridges Board, Bridge Owners Forum, SCOSS, and several BSI committees and other groups.

Professor Campbell R. Middleton Laing O’Rourke Professor of Construction EngineeringCambridge University

Campbell Middleton is the Laing O’Rourke Professor of Construction Engineering at Cambridge University. Prior to Cambridge he worked for nearly ten years in bridge and highway construction and design in Australia and with Arup in London. He is Chairman of the UK Bridge Owners Forum and acts as a specialist bridge consultant in the UK and abroad. His research interests cover smart sensors and structural health monitoring, advanced failure and risk analysis, asset management, non-destructive testing, additive manufacturing, applications of computer vision to civil engineering and new materials. He is one of the executive team managing the Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction, which has been awarded over £15M in funding by the EPSRC and Innovate UK. This grant has led to Cambridge being awarded £18M by the government and a further £18M by the University as part of the UK government’s £138M investment in university research in infrastructure and cities (UKCRIC) to establish the UKs National Infrastructure Research Facility in Infrastructure Sensing (NRFIS). He was Principal Investigator for the EPSRC Future Infrastructure Forum Network and was a Visiting Researcher on a Canadian NSERC Strategic Grant entitled “Protecting Canada’s Concrete Bridges”.

Ender is one of the leading wind engineers in the UK. He manages RWDI’s UK office and provides climate consulting services to designers across the UK, Europe and Central Asia. Ender’s vast project experience includes a diversity of structures, from tall towers to long-span bridges. Clients benefit from Ender’s ability to develop cost-effective solutions for wind and climate challenges that support the integrity of architects’ and fellow engineers’ designs. In addition to his noted commercial projects, Ender frequently collaborates with researchers and planning departments on the design of climate-adaptive structures.

Stephen Pottle Highways Sector Lead WSP

Stephen has over 25 years’ experience of working in both the private and public sectors. He is a Technical Director and Highway Sector Lead in WSP’s Civil, Bridge and Ground Engineering discipline, providing technical advice and support to clients across the UK. In addition to the development of guidance on the management of safety critical fixings, he has been involved in the research and development of national guidance in many areas including bridge inspections, structural health monitoring and hidden defects. He is currently co-chair of the Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme and a steering group member of the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction.

Remco Renting Senior Project Manager Groningen Province, The Netherlands

Remco Renting is a senior project Engineer of the province of Groningen, which is a local authority in the north of the Netherlands.As a mechanical engineer he is working on movable bridges and locks mainly dealing with retrofitting but also involved in new build projects. His main activities are design, tendering and supervisor work at the in-house engineering department of the province. He has been involved in several projects where Fibre Reinforced Polymers have been used and has experience in how this material can be accepted in infrastructure.

Jenny RobertsSenior Project Manager, BridgeCatGaist Solutions

Jenny Roberts is Senior Project Manager for BridgeCat at Gaist, responsible for managing and delivering the BridgeCat project. With a background in engineering and having worked on many full life cycle projects, she has been ideally placed to take this concept through to prototype and beyond. Currently based in Lancaster, and since graduating from Lancaster University with a Masters in Mechatronic Engineering, Jenny has worked for a number of companies designing and developing products that aim to benefit society; something that she has been passionate about since her student days.

Theo Salet is a full Professor in the Department of the Built Environment, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and visiting Professor at the Singapore Centre of 3D Printing (SC3DP) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He combines these positions with a partnership at the consulting engineering firm Witteveen+Bos. He is a member of the board of the Dutch Concrete Association and the chairman of Stufib, the Dutch Association of Structural Engineers in Concrete Structures. His main topic of research is 3D printing of concrete structures, including innovative design, materials testing and numerical modelling of both print process and hardened printed components. He studied structural engineering and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy from Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands.

Luke WalkerSenior Engineer – BridgesEngineering Design GroupDevon County Council

Since graduating from Cambridge in 2006, Luke worked on water tanks, dockyards and nuclear power stations in Jacobs’ Structures team until early 2013 when he joined Devon County Council to lead an exciting footbridge project. Luke took his outline footbridge design to professional review, becoming a Chartered Engineer in 2014 and moving into the role of Senior Engineer. The next years were spent delivering initial piling works, finishing the detailed design, and more recently delivering the footbridge amongst other structures in a £10million road widening scheme which opened in Autumn 2017.
