The 11
Must Read Books
of September
2014
by The Cover Co.
Good books are like good friends - they’re not always easy to find, and sometimes you need an introduction.
A good book makes you think. The world created by the author makes you look at the world around
you in a new way.
So here are the top eleven books that I think are
worth your reading time this month.
1.Stone
Mattress by Margaret Attwood
Margaret Atwood is a master storyteller. From the first page,
this short story collection, doesn’t disappoint. With stories ranging from an elderly woman who hears the voice of her dead
husband, to a tale about a young girl who morphs into
something rather strange, this is definitely a book to curl up with.

2.Station
Eleven by Emily St.
John MandelI think I’ll hold all of the
dystopian fiction I read this year to the high standard set by The Country of Ice Cream Star. Yet, Emily St. John Mandel’s book is promising. It definitely sounds intriguing: a travelling troupe of actors and musicians perform concerts and Shakespeare to
settlements in a world savaged by a flu
pandemic.

3.The Hive
Construct by Alexander
MaskillI haven’t read good science fiction in a while so I’m really looking forward to this book. New Cairo is described as a ‘city built on technology’ and artificial implants are used to
solve illnesses and ailments. It all sounds great … until a
computer virus begins to shut everything down.
Bring on the adventure!

4.Doctor
Who: The Blood Cell by David GossI admit to some skepticism about books based on TV
shows. A book is a completely contrasting proposition to a TV series, and as it’s not written by Steven Moffat, who knows what to expect. But this book has a
couple of things going for it: the Doctor (of course) and it’s set
in a prison. O.K. Goss, show us
what you’ve got.

5.The Bone Clocks by
David Mitchell
The title and the cover of this book evoke a sense of mystery.
The description speaks of a teenage runaway and a strange woman who asks for ‘asylum’.
Everything about this novel points to very strange goings
on. I’m definitely looking forward to this Man Booker Prize
longlisted novel, I hope it lives up to it’s top-billing.

6.Bright
Shards of Someplace
Else by Monica McFawn
This book, written by Monica McFawn, promises some
interesting short stories. I’m particularly intrigued by the story involving a man who works at a
butterfly- release business & becomes obsessed with solving
a famous mathematical proof - it just
sounds too weird not to read!

7.Goodhouse by Peyton Marshall
Speculative fiction often parallels scientific progress. We can read about developments in
genetics in newspapers or scientific journals, but in this
book, Peyton Marshall questions what we might do with that information. Would we lock up children with criminal genes? What would happen if we did?
This book offers potential answers to these and
other questions.

8.Neverhome
by Laird Hunt
I’ve never read anything by Laird Hunt, but here’s the
teaser: ‘Meet Gallant Ash: hero, folk legend and master of war. Ash is a leader of men and a
brutal and fearless soldier. Will look you dead in the eye and kill
for no reason. But Ash has a secret. Gallant Ash is a woman.
This is her story.’ I’m already hooked!

9.The Wonder of All Things
by Jason Mott
This book has a very intriguing protagonist: a teenage girl with the ability to heal others of their physical ailments. Ava looks to be a compelling narrator, as her
healing gift leads to her own increasing weaknesses. Decisions will have to be
made, it’ll be interesting to see how far this ‘gift’
takes her.

10.The Zone of Interest by
Martin AmisThis book sounds like a modern
fairy tale. A king asks his favourite wizard to create a
magic mirror, one that shows you your soul rather than your reflection. What will the mirror
reveal, and will anyone be able to bear looking into it? This is a very original premise and I am
really looking forward to reading this novel.

11.By the
Book by Diane
SchoemperlenLess book, more
collage/compendium/collection, Diane Schoemperlen’s By the Book is one of those creations that makes us rethink the way
we look at narrative and language. With video media and social media offering new ways for stories to be told, I’m hoping that in this work, Schoemperlen
does something truly innovative with
words on paper.
