6. The lens is compatible with Extender EF1.4X IIand EF2X II.

7. Tight seal structure ensures excellent dust-proof and drip-proof performance.

* Based on [1/focallength] second. Generally, it requiresa shutter speed [1/focallength] second or faster toprevent camera shake.

6 Safety Precautions• Do not look at the sun or a bright light source

through the lens or camera. Doing so could resultin loss of vision. Looking at the sun directly throughthe lens is especially hazardous.

• Whether it is attached to the camera or not, donot leave the lens under the sun without thelens cap attached. This is to prevent the lens fromconcentrating the sun's rays, which could cause afire

Handling Cautions• If the lens is taken from a cold environment into

a warm one, condensation may develop on thelens surface and internal parts. To preventcondensation in this case, first put the lens into anairtight plastic bag before taking it from a cold towarm environment. Then take out the lens after ithas warmed gradually. Do the same when takingthe lens from a warm environment into a cold one.

See your camera's instructions for details onmounting and detaching the lens.

1. Mounting and Detaching the Lensu

o After detaching the lens, place the lens with therear end up to prevent the lens surface andelectrical contacts from getting scratched.

o If the contacts get soiled, scratched, or havefingerprints on them, corrosion or faultyconnections can result. The camera and lensmay not operate properly.

o If the contacts get soiled or have fingerprints onthem, clean them with a soft cloth.

o If you remove the lens, cover it with the dustcap. To attach it properly, align the lens mountindex and the 0 index of the dust cap as shownin the diagram, and turn clockwise. To remove it,reverse the order.

The lens mount has a rubber ring for enhancedwater- and dust-resistance. The rubber ring maycause slight abrasions around the camera's lensmount, but this will not cause any problems. If therubber ring becomes worn, it is replaceable by aCanon Service Center at cost.

2. Setting the FocusMode

To shoot in autofocus (A F) mode, set the focusmode switch to AF.To use only manual focusing (MF), set the focusmode switch to MF, and focus by turning thefocusing ring. The focusing ring always works, regardless of the focus mode.

aJ After autofocusing in ONE SHOT AF mode, focusmanually by pressing the shutter button halfwayand turning the focusing ring. (Full-time manualfocus)

3. Switching the FocusingDistance Ran e

You can set the focusing distance range to1.2 m/3.9 ft. to infinity or 2.5 m/8.2 ft. to infinity.By setting the suitable focusing distance range, the actual autofocusing time can be shorter.

U Be sure to finish zooming before focusing.Zooming after focusing can affect the focus.

The ET-87 hood can keep unwanted light out of the lens, and also protects the front of the lens fromrain, snow, and dust.

AttachingTo attach the hood, align the hood's attachmentposition mark with the red dot on the front of thelens, then turn the hood as shown by the arrowuntil the lens' red dot is aligned with the hood'sstop position mark.

RemovingTo remove the hood, hold down the button on theside and turn the hood in the direction of thearrow until the position mark on the hood alignswith the red dot.The hood can be reverse-mounted on the lensfor storage.

••• Part of the picture may be blocked if the hood is not attached properly.• When attaching or detaching the hood, grasp the base of the hood to turn it. To prevent deformation, do not

grasp the rim of the hood to turn it.

6. Image Stabilizer Settings

• If you are not going to use theimage stabilizer function, setthe switch to OFF.

2 Select the stabilizer mode.

• MODE 1: Corrects vibrationsin all directions. It is mainlyeffective for shooting stillsubjects.

• MODE 2: It compensates forvertical camera shake duringfollowing shots in a horizontaldirection, and compensates forhorizontal camera shakeduring following shots in avertical direction .

3 When you press the shutterbutton halfway, the ImageStabilizer will startoperating.

• Make sure the image in theviewfinder is stable, then pressthe shutter button the rest ofthe way down to take thepicture.

7. Tips on Using the ImC!ge§tabilizer

• In semi-darkened areas such as indoors oroutdoors at night.

• In locations where flash photography isprohibited, such as art museums and theaterstages.

• In situations where your footing is uncertain.• In situations where fast shutter settings cannot

be used.

o The Image Stabilizer cannot compensate for ablurred shot caused by a subject that moved.

o Set the STABILIZER switch to OFF when you aretaking pictures using the Bulb setting (longexposures). If the STABILIZER switch is set to ON,the image stabilizer function may introduce errors.

o The Image Stabilizer might not be fully effectivein the following cases:

o You shoot while riding on a bumpy road.o You move the camera dramatically for a

panning shot in Mode 1.o You shoot using techniques other than

following shots in Mode 2.o The Image Stabilizer consumes more power

than normal shooting, so fewer shots can betaken if you use the function.

o The image stabilizer operates for about twoseconds even when your finger is off the shutterbutton. Do not remove the lens while the stabilizeris in operation. This will cause a malfunction.

o With the EOS-1V/HS, 3, ELAN 7E/ELAN7/30/33, ELAN lNE/ELAN 7N/30V/33V, ELANII/ELAN IIE/50/50E, REBEL 2000/300, IX, and030, the Image Stabilizer will not work duringself-timer operation.

aJ . Using a tripod also stabilizes the image. However, depending on the kind of tripod andshooting conditions, sometimes it may be betterto turn off the Image Stabilizer function.

• The stabilizer is equally effective for hand-heldphotography and photography with a monopod.

• The Image Stabilizer function also operateswhen the lens is used with the EF12 II/EF25 IIExtension Tube, and the EF1.4X II/EF2X IIExtender.

• Pictures may look distorted after being takendepending on the camera, but this doesn't affectshooting.

• If you set the camera's Custom Function tochange the assigned button to operate the AF,the Image Stabilizer will operate when you pressthe newly assigned AF button.

8. Infinity Compensation Mark

To compensate for shifting of the infinity focuspoint that results from changes in temperature. The infinity position at normal temperature is thepoint at which the vertical line of the L mark isaligned with the distance indicator on thedistance scale.

o For accurate manual focusing of subjects atinfinity, look through the viewfinder or look at themagnified image* on the LCD screen whilerotating the focusing ring.

The infrared index corrects the focus setting when usingmonochrome infrared film. Focus on the subjectmanually, then adjust the distance setting by moving thefocusing ring to the corresponding infrared index mark.

o Some EOS cameras cannot use infrared film. Seethe instructions for your EOS camera.

aJ . The infrared index position is based on awavelength of 800 nm.

• The compensation amount differs depending onthe focal length. Use the indicated focal length asa guide when setting the compensation amount.

• Be sure to observe the manufacturer'sinstructions when using infrared film.

• Use a red filter when you take the picture.

10:-l!sin~gJ!leTripod MountAdjusting the Revolving MountYou can loosen the orientation lock-knob on the tripod mount to allow it to rotate as needed to fit aparticular camera model for switching between vertical and horizontal positions.

DetachingFirst remove the lens from the camera and then remove the tripod mount from the lens as shownbelow. To attach the tripod mount, reverse the procedure.

1 Loosen the orientationlocking knob.

Slide off the tripod collaraway from the rear of thelens.
