MR. MICHAEL BENNETT

DR. THORSTEN BECK

Michael Bennett is the Head of Derivatives and Structured Finance at the World Bank. Among other areas, he is responsible for the World Bank's capital markets work in the areas of financial derivatives, structured bonds, carbon finance, catastrophe risk financing and Islamic finance. His notable transactions include arranging US$700 million of international “vaccine sukuk” for the International Finance Facility for Immunization in 2014 and 2015. He has published articles on, among other topics, Islamic derivatives, social impact sukuk and sukuk to finance green projects. Mr. Bennett previously worked for international investment banks in New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong. He holds a doctoral degree in Law from Columbia University in New York.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS/MODERATORS

DR. ISHRAT HUSAIN Ishrat Husain is Chairman AAOIFI Board of Governance and Ethics, Chairman Centre for Excellence in Islamic Finance at IBA and member Board of Trustees of IRTI. He is one of the founding Directors of Islamic Financial Services. As the Governor State Bank of Pakistan, he introduced Islamic banking in Pakistan in its present form in consultation with the Shariah scholars, bankers and academics. In recognition of his outstanding public service, he received the highest civilian award of Nishan e Imtiaz from the President of Pakistan. Dr. Husain obtained Master’s degree in Development Economics from Williams College and Doctorate in Economics from Boston University in 1978.

DR. WALID ABDELWAHAB

Walid Abdelwahab is the Director General, Country Relations and Services, Islamic Development Bank. He leads the IDB’s engagement with member countries to deliver customized development solutions through policy dialogue, advisory, and financing. Dr. Abdelwahab oversees the Bank's relationship and service delivery with its 57-member countries through 11 Regional Hubs in Asia, Africa, MENA, Europe and Latin America. He also leads strategic initiatives in innovative finance, change management, organizational efficiency, and business development. He previously led IDB’s infrastructure activities.

DR. KHALED SHERIF Khaled Sherif is the Vice-President, Regional Development, Integration and Business Delivery, African Development Bank (AfDB). He is an experienced economist and manager with 25 years of experience within the World Bank, spanning strategic, operational and technical expertise in development and development finance. He rose progressively through the ranks in the World Bank, joined through the Young Professional Program and moved up as Senior Economist, Principal Economist, Lead Economist and Sector Manager for private and financial sector development. He later became the Chief Administrative Officer of the World Bank’s Africa Region.

MR. BILEL SAHNOUN

Bilel Sahnoun has been the Chief Executive Officer of Tunis Stock Exchange since February 2015. He was previously on the top management of private companies operating in different sectors: banks, retail, electrical and mechanical industries. He is working on a new program for SME's: education, coaching, capital market financing, etc. to enlarge the TSE's market cap, and to attract new investors by promoting the new investment law in Tunisia. Mr. Sahnoun is an engineer graduate from Ecole Centrale de Lyon, and he earned an MBA from Mediterranean Business School.

DR. ZAMIR IQBAL Zamir Iqbal is the Vice President (Finance) and Chief Financial Officer of the Islamic Development Bank. Previously he headed the World Bank Global Islamic Finance Development Center in Istanbul. He has more than 25 years of experience of risk management, capital markets, and asset management at the World Bank Treasury. Islamic finance is his research focus and he has co-authored several articles and books on Islamic finance. His co-edited book, "Economic Development and Islamic Finance" was published by the World Bank in 2013. He earned his PhD in international finance from the George Washington University and serves as Professional faculty at Carey Business School of Johns Hopkins University.

Thorsten Beck is professor of banking and finance at Cass Business School in London. He is also a research fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and the CESifo. He was professor of economics from 2008 to 2014 at Tilburg University and the founding chair of the European Banking Center from 2008 to 2013. Previously he worked in the research department of the World Bank and has also worked as consultant for, among others, the European Central Bank, Bank of England, BIS, IMF, European Commission, and German Development Corporation. He holds a PhD from the University of Virginia and an MA from the University of Tübingen in Germany.
