GENERAL Quick Quoter saves SRs time Sherry Harvey/CSD

I The new Quick Quoter sales rep tool will help provide that competitive edge you've been looking for. You can now create professional laser-printed quotations in a fraction of the time it used to take. No more filling out worksheets or waiting for the backlog of quotes to be printed and signed.

i The Quick Quoter is a proposal aid, too. It automat- 1 ically retrieves correct prices, extends totals and i 1

prints a budgetary quote at the press of a key. You can create multiple quotes, each with different sup-

I port coverage, in seconds. By watching the product and support totals accumulate as you propose various alternatives, you can generate the solution that per-

! fectly matches the customer's pocketbook.

1 Quick Quoter, formally known as Integrated Quota-

I tion System (IQS), will being alpha test in the Bellevue office in February. Other key features of the system are:

Electronic Authorization - to eliminate "in-basket backup"

An Automated Quote Summary - to pre- sent high-level information to customer management

Trade, GSA and Support Pricing - no more manual entry or adjustments

Quote Tracking and Reporting - to track quote $ and ensure timeliness

Automatic Repricing - to ensure quote accuracy and control

Flexible Formatting - to match the quote to customer needs

Skeleton Quotes - for repetitive quoting of complex configurations

More features are on the horizon, too. They include a "portable" version to take to customer sites, an inter- face to the product configurator, and automatic quote- to-order conversion.

Be sure to watch for more information about when this new tool will be installed on the HP 3000 in your office.

New recruiting presentation now available Dave Mahrt/ISG

Information Systems Group (ISG) announces the new Value-Added Supplier recruiting presentation for both commercial and technical third-party reps. This stand-up flip-chart-binder style presentation is designed for one-on-one selling with the key decision maker of a Value-Added Keseller (VAR) or Software Supplier as the audience. This 30-to-45-minute pre- sentation allows you to give the message of "why HI' should be the logical choice as their vendor." VAR solutions plus HP products and support combine to form a "Profitable Business Kelationship."

T h e presentation includes an overview (three to four slides) of all five integrated computer families: HP 100, HP 250, HP 1000, HP 3000, and HP 9000 along with HP peripherals. You can select the products that you wish to present to a particular prospect and leave the others out.

T h e flip-chart-binder version has been distributed to 1 the field. Contact your DM or FMM for a copy of the binder you can use. Slides, both 35mm and overheads. are being completed now and can be ordered directlv from ISG Graphics. Contact Betty Smith a t 408-973- 7611 or 1-125-7611 and request PIN VAS-5001. T h e cost is approximately $175 per set for both 35mm and overheads.

Additional binders are available at no charge. T o order binders, or if you have any questions, contact Dave Mahrt - ISG Value-Added Solutions Marketing a t 408-725-81 11 ext. 3079 or TELNET 1- 125-3079.

SERIES 4 0 Replace HP-97 orders with HP-41 systems Kent Henscheid/PCD

T h e HP-97A, obsoleted on Decembe.r 1 ,1984 , is now a t zero inventory, but dealers and SRs continue to ask for additional units. Since there a re none, there 's a great potential to switch requests for the HP-97As to HP-41 systems.

Look a t t h e following comparison:

1 Product US List Price

HP-97A $750 versus

HP-41CV 225 H P 82104A card reader 195 H P 82143A thermal printer 385 -

$805

T h e $55 additional list price buys a lot:

A flexible system: plug-in ROM software, plug-in RAM, HP-IL support , and the ability to interface to peripherals, instruments and computers.

Card compatibility with HP-67/97.

RPN programming.

Alphanumerics (not just numerics).

Access to thousands of Users Library programs.

Newer technologies.

Now is the time to move your HP-97.4 customers on to newer systems. the HP-41 system or even more powerful programmables, such as the HP-71B.

Australian insurance company uses HP-71B Margaret Doolen/PCD

T h e Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP), Australia's largest insurance company, is using the HP-71B to provide fast and accurate solutions to its customers' insurance needs.

Using the HP-71B, AMP agents no longer need the cumbersome and time-consuming books of ra te tables they have always used. Instead, they can enter infor- mation about a particular client and, in seconds, pro- duce a policy's benefits, charges, surrender value, yield, and more. Even the newest and most compli- cated insurance products a re easily handled by the HP-71B. And the calculations can be done while the customer looks on. T h a t means more productive agents, more satisfied customers, and fewer lost :sales.

Since AMP initiated its offer in August 1984, over 650 agents have bought the HP-71B with two memory modules and a custom overlay for a total of more than $500,000 in sales. HP SR John Keen, who closed the deal with AMP, expects this number to grow to over 1,500 units a s more agents realize tlhe benefits of owning an HP-71B.

According to Jack Collis, AMP Marketing Manager, the only limit to the programs available to AMP agents is their imagination and their need. After the original programs have been field tested by the agents, they will be transferred to custom ROMs. Then a new se t of programs - programs requested by the agents themselves - will be made availab~le on cassette a t the sales office, and the process will be repeated.

AMP conducted an exhaustive evaluation of the 13P- 71B and its competitors. As part of the research, 128 agents were asked their preference of the HP-7'1 B and 7 other computers. T h e consensus was overwhelining- ly in favor of the HP-71B. Asked how AMP expects the HP-71B to perform over time, Jack Collis re- sponds, "The only safety we had in buying a machine in today's swiftly changing environment was to bluy the best machine available from the firm most likely to be able to handle technological change, and from someone who will be around to service it in the future. W e bought not only the Hewlett-Packard machine but the Hewlett-Packard organization, because they are world-leaders in this technology."

GENERAL DA&C reading list Grant Drenkow/LID

One of the first steps in making you successful in the Data Acquisition and Control (DA&C) market is knowledge. From time to time we will be giving you the names of courses that you should attend and lists of books that you can read to bring you up to speed on Data Acquisition and Control.

We have already told you about the DA&C Peaking Seminars in February and March at the Loveland Instrument Division. We have also given you the name of the Data Acquisition and Control Fundamen- tals Training Course (HP 50015A) that is given around the world at the local sales offices by SEs. Now we would like to build up your library.

T h e "bible" of any Data Acquisition and Control SR or SE should be the Instrument Engineer's Handbook. This book was compiled by Bela Liptak and published by Chilton Book Co. in Radnor, PA. It comes in a two volume set ; volume two includes a supplement.

The Instrument Engineer's Handbook is not light reading, but it is a worthwhile reference document. Some of the material in the February and March DA&C Peaking Seminar was derived from these books.

Another good reference book is Programmable Con- trollers - Concepts and Applications by C.T. Jones and L. A. Bryan. The book is published by IPCI ASTEC Publications in Atlanta, GA. It explains pro- grammable controllers in terms of both hardware and software. It also covers data highways and typical applications. It is an excellent book designed to help you understand programmable controllers in general.

New schedule for DA&C peaking seminar Gary Pinkerton/LID

Due to the overwhelming demand for our Data Acquisition and Control (DA&C) peaking seminars, we have added a class for SRs.

The old schedule was:

SR Seminar February 19-22, 1985 SR Weekend February 23-24, 1985 SE Seminar March 5-8, 1985 SE Weekend March 9-10, 1985

Sugar refinery run by HP 1000 with HP 2250 Grant DrenkodLID

The Onesimo Redondo, a cooperative sugar society, in Valladolid, Spain, has automated a sugar refinery using an HP 1000 and an HP 2250. The three-year project is a joint effort between a local university, the sugar refinery. and CPI - a local engineering company.

Evaporator

1 r V

Molasses

Automation begins just inside the front gate of the refinery. T h e farmer brings in sugar beets to a scale to be weighed and at that time, the name and address are entered into an HP 1000 F-Series computer. T h e weight and sugar content of the beets are also recorded in the computer. At the same time, a data base of farmers, location, amount, and sugar content is created. At the end of the day, the data base is trans- ferred to an HP 3000 at the central office where the accounting (invoices, payments, payroll, etc.) is handled.

Inside the refinery, an HP 2250 in the Contro1!1000 configuration is used to control the processes. This process consists of 100 analog inputs, 32 digital sig- nals, and 44 analog outputs. T h e HP 2250 controls level, density, flow, pressure, temperature, and pH of water in the processes.

After the sugar beets have been cleaned, they are run against a stream of water through a long cylinder at a determined temperature. This process extracts sugar from the beets in the form of "juice" and leaves "wet pulp" which is dried and sold as fertilizer. In the next stage, the juice undergoes a series of processes intended to remove any impurities. Pre-soaking, soak- ing, carbonation, filtration, and sulification are exam- ples of these processes. The HP 2250 both monitors and controls the parameters in each process.

T h e juice then passes through evaporators that raise the sugar concentration from 14% to 60%. T h e juice now takes the form of syrup. The syrup passes on to the boilers, where the pressure is dropped and the sugar crystals start to form. At this point, the crystals are separated from the syrup with a centrifuge. T h e sugar crystals are put into bags for distribution and syrup is bottled as molasses.

T h e software is written in amplified HP BASIC. When speed is desired, some of the routines are written in Pascal. An extensive set of graphics routines have been written to allow the user to monitor the process in the refinery. Program development for the HP 2250 is performed on an HP 1000 A700 and downloaded to the HP 2250 over a DS link. With an A600 processor inside the HP 2250, there is enough power to monitor the inputs, perform calculations for 44 control loops, and send out the necessary outputs to control the processes.

Although the development of the graphics has taken a long time, the refinery is pleased with the results. Less manpower is now required in the refinery and the processes are better controlled. T h e refinery plans to save over one million psetas ($100,000) per year

~7 and management hopes to automate several other refineries in the area.

HP-Design Revision 05.00 now available Wolfgang Franzke/BEO

Revision 05.00 of HP-Design, the ME-CAD package for parametric variation, is now available. This revi- sion contains the following powerful new features:

Calculation of hatched areas - T h e approximate area for each area of hatching is calculated and displayed.

Plotter spooling - You now have two ways to plot a drawing, either directly to your workstation plotter or to a file. Such a file contains HP-GL statements in ASCII format. If your workstation is connected to an SRM system, HP-Design uses this plot file for plotter spooling or you can use the data in the file for your own application programs.

Reading dimension values - Instead of typing in each dimension value, you can now read them from a file. This makes it even easier to create a whole family of parts because the input file can contain all the necessary dimensioning data.

Reading text items - In the same way that text can be read from a file, you can add standard text or parts lists to your drawings. Creating such input files is easy to do using the special program pro-

vided or your own program.

Writing dimension values - Dimension values can be written to a file. This is especially useful if the values were calculated by the parametric variation algorithm. The stored values can then be used as the basis for further calculations.

Writing data base information - You can also store information about your active drawing in a file. For example, the drawing name, classification schemes and results, and information items. You can then use this information as required. All the new file I/O features can be handled in the partition while HP-Design is running.

These new enhancements establish HP-Design as the ideal system for 2-D variation design.

HP SNA IMF completes HP SNA/3000 family John Zoglin/IND

New AdvanceNet product SNA IMF provides H P 3000 users for the first time with full Physical Unit type 2 access to applications written for IBM 3270 devices in an SNA environment. SNA IMF, a Network Service, is installed with the SNA Link, a Network Link, to enable interactive HP 3000-IBM mainframe communications.

Complete SNA/3000 family SNA IMF joins SNA NRJE (the Network Service that provides batch SNA data communications) and the SNA Link to provide a complete family of SNA prod- ucts. SNA Link is the foundation for an "SNA Node": SNA IMF and SNA NRJE may operate simultaneously with the same SNA Link to provide both batch and interactive SNA data communications capability (SNA IMF and SNA NRJE may also operate individually with an SNA Link).

1 New A d v a n c e N e t Product 1 Completes S N A F a m i l y

Applications Remote users may access a central data base main- tained on an IBM mainframe, e.g. an operator a t a warehouse loading dock could interactively update an inventory data base as products are shipped or a marketing manager could access data on his sales for the latest month.

System support personnel may write and edit applica- tions programs that reside and are to be executed on an IBM mainframe.

These applications can be accessed by users on multi- ple HP 3000 computers connected to an AdvanceNet Network. As SNA IMF and SNA NRJE work with other H P AdvanceNet products, these HP-IBM datacom products can act, individually or together, as a gateway between H P AdvanceNet and IBM SNA Networks.

Upgrade program for HP bisync customers In order to protect customers' investment in bisync products, the Information Network Group (ING) is offering a special SNA upgrade program that will run for one year starting February 1, 1985. Customers may upgrade their IMF (PIN 30250) to SNA IMF (PIN 30247) and receive a $3,000 credit ("A" copy). Likewise NIRJE (PIN 30249) may be upgraded to SNA NRJE (PIN 30245) and receive a $2,000 credit ("A" copy). Customers need not physically trade in their old products; all they must do is order the special upgrade option. By encouraging customers to upgrade to SNA, this program will prepare them for fu ture HP-IBM datacom products that will enhance SNA capabilities.

Capabilities SNA IMF, along with the SNA Link, enables the HP 3000 to emulate an IBM 3274 or 3276 control unit. In SNA terms, the emulation is a Physical Unit type 2 (PU 2), Logical Unit types 2 and 3 (LU 2,3). Terminals, printers, and applications programs con- nected to the HP 3000 emulate IBM 3278 terminals and 3287 printers. Up to 6 4 devices are supported by SNA IMF concurrently.

T h e SNA Link implements protocols in the lower three layers of SNA and provides physical connec- tivity to the IBM host via a leased or dial-up line. One SNA Link can support both batch and interactive communications simultaneously over the same line, a t speeds up to 56K bps. This will cut costs for network users who will be able to use one link to support both SNA IMF and SNA NRJE.

Network configuration checkout T h e Network Configuration Checkout Program (NCC) is a valuable selling tool provided by the Net- work Support Center (NSC) (GND centralized sup- port in Europe) which is part of the Network Market- ing Center. Many customers have mentioned that the NCC Program was a crucial factor in their decision to

go with HP, because it reflects HP'tj concern for the customer and commitment to provi'ding the highest quality support.

If a customer's host software components have not been specified as being supported (see SNA IMF Field Training Manual or data sheet) the NSC must be con- tacted to determine whether an order can be placed. Once SNA IMF has been ordered, the account SE must send a copy of the host gen to the NSC for verification so that an installation date may be set.

AdvanceNet '85

In ING's fourth mailing, you should receive an SNA IMF Field Training Manual, data sheet, and summary sheet to provide more detailed information about this AdvanceNet product.

SNA IMF price and ordering in.formation SNA IMF (PIN 30247) is priced at $6,000 for the first license ("A" copy) on the HP Series 4X and 6X. For the HP 3000 Series 37, the first license of SNA IMF costs $3,500. "R" copy prices are 50% of the "A" copy

@ prices. Delivery of SNA IMF, pending completion of the Network Configuration Checkclut Program, is four to five weeks after an order has been placed.

IMF price cut

Effective February 1, 1985, ING is reducing the price of IMF (PIN 30250) on the Series 4X and 6X from $7,000 to $6,000 ("A" copy).

Coordinated delivery program now includes HP 3000 software Rosemarie Larsen/SDC

The Software Distribution Center (SDC) now adds HP 3000 software to the coordinated delivery pro- gram for North America and select Intercon coun- tries. Customers will now receive their software directly in coordination with their HP 3000 systems.

In December 1984, the system coordinated delivery program expanded to include the Fundamental Operating software (FOS) for all HP 3000 systems running MPE-V. Shipment of this software is trig- gered by a "media product" order. The media product designates the FOS version and the media type required to run on each SPU. These are mandatory products that an SR must order with every SPU. It is important to note that the media product is not simply an option to an SPU order - it is ;I separate product

on the Corporate Price List with a supplying division of 5007-SDC. The actual cost of this product is bundled into the cost of the SPU; therefore, it carries a zero dollar amount on the Corporate Price List.

There are a few key steps that must take place to ensure that the customer receives the appropriate software with the SPU.

Sales Representatives Prior to placing an order for an SPU, confer with the AEO (account responsible SE or DM) to deter- mine the appropriate "media product" and options.

Order the SPU and related peripherals according to the current. HP 3000 System Configuration Guide. Be sure to include the proper "media product" on the coordinated system order.

Inform the AEO (account responsible SE or DM) of the coordinated sales order number and the list of all HP 3000 subsystems ordered with the SF'U.

AEO and CEO An SE or DM will confer with the SR to determine the appropriate "media product" and options for the SPU order.

The AEO will request that SDC provide a customized SUBSYS tape for the customer. 'This request is based on the SE obtaining the necessary information from the SR. The SUBSYS tape will contain software for any subsystems and ap.plica- tions, which the customer ordered, that appear on the integrated HP 3000 MIT. Software that does not appear on the MIT will be provided by the AEO; these include manufacturing applications, administrative applications, distribution applica- tions, and semiconductor productivity applications.

The AEO and CEO will assist the customer, as needed, with the initial installation of the software.

For HP-installed systems (Series 37XE, 39,4X, and 6x1 the CEO must use the FOS software shipped from SDC to perform the initial system installation. For customer-installable Ser:~es 37 systems, the customer will perform the FOS installation.

The installation procedures for SUBSYS !soft- ware for all systems are designed so that in most cases a customer system manager can install the software with little or no SE assistance. The SE will always be available to assist when the soft- ware configuration is not customer installable, or if a customer encounters difficulty installing the software.

Note: Any SUBSYS tape sent out from SDC that contains products that are not customer-installable will be clearly marked with a "warning sticker" that cautions the customer not to attempt installa- tion before consulting a n SE.

Software Distribution Center Ship the media product (FOS kit) directly to the customer site in coordination with the SPU shipment.

Ten days prior to shipment of the media product, notify the AEO, via a "FOS shipment alert" that an SPU and FOS kit will be shipped into their area and request that they order a customized SIJBSYS tape from SDC.

Upon receipt of a phone order from the AEO, ship a customized SUBSYS kit directly to the customer site or to an SE office, as requested. If the SUBSYS order is received prior to the shipment of the FOS kit, SDC will ship both kits together.

Fur ther details and questions related to the Coordi- nated Delivery Program can be found in the "Coordi- nated Delivery of HP 3000 Software-Field Training Manual," which was distributed to Commercial SRs in early December. T h e manual covers all ordering details, media product descriptions and Corporate Price List listings, ordering examples, and frequently asked questions. Additional copies of this manual can be ordered from SDC as a n I2 order over the HEART system - P/N 5957-7038Ell84. First European PBX for HP 3000 certified Jean-Pierre Baudouin/GND

Certification has been granted to Thomson Opus 4000 digital PBX for use in connection with the HP 3000.

This first European PBX certification was announced a t a press conference held in Paris on November 27, 1984. Early response from this announcement shows a strong interest from the press and their readers - your customers. Certification of this PBX clearly posi- tions HP as a leader in business communications and a partner to the European communications industry.

This is also a message of assurance to your customer. First, a n extensive test of the OPUS/HP 3000 connec- tions was conducted a t the Grenoble Networks Divi- sion to ensure proper functionality. Then a joint sup- port agreement was signed between HP France and Thomson to guarantee support of our common customers*.

Finally, joint flyers and data sheets were published by the French SMC to help merchandize this solution.

We are now working on other PBXs from different manufacturers and we will keep you updated as we progress. *Although the joint support agreement is only valid in France at this time, i t zt'ill be modified as Thomson extends its support to other countries.

HP Series 37 customer installability notes Mike Tarens/CS Y-R

As you a re all aware, the HP 3000 Series 37 is designed to be a customer-installable system. With the initial shipments in December and January, Com- puter Systems Division (CSY) is requiring that the customer purchase site prep and installation assis- tance. This is to ensure that your customers encounter no problems in coming up on the system. Beginning in February 1985, we will be able to offer a fully customer-installable system. In February the Series 37s in the following configuration will be fully installable by the customer.

This is the only Series 37A that will be customer installable on February 1, 1985. All other configura- tions will require HP installation assistance by an HP customer engineer.

(The 37XE system does not need separately purchased iristallation assistance as it is already included in the price of the system.)

HP-IB peripherals In certain cases, peripherals added to the Series 37 may also necessitate the purchase of HP assistance. When adding extra peripherals such as the HP 7945 disc or HP 9144 cartridge tape, remember that if they sit outside the main cabinet and are HP-IB devices, the customer cannot install them. When HP-IB cables are out of the cabinet, there is a potential for ground- ing problems which could possibly result in system failures. Therefore, installation and site prep must be ordered at the time the peripherals are ordered. This will ensure that the equipment is installed properly, which translates into satisfaction for both you and your customer.

HP-Draft now links to HP 30100 Joe Nowakowski/BEO

In response to the many requests from the field, HP-Draft now includes a BDAT utility program. This is a program that converts binary files (BDAT) to ASCII files to enable datacom transfer. It also recon- verts transmitted ASCII files to the original BDAT files.

This feature is a very useful sales tool; in fact f ~ ~ r two major accounts in Europe it clinched the deal. C)ne has a number of HP 3000s at various locations and sends HP-Draft drawings via the HP DS13000 network. The drawing files are then uploaded at the receiving: end using the Series 200 terminal emulator, and recon- verted to BDAT files ready for use by HP-Draft.

HP-FE files may also be transmitted in this way. Remote station to station transfer via modem V24lRS-232 is also possible. You can even send your files to other non-HP mainframes, providing that the terminal emulator can be configured properly.

This opens up a whole range of new benefits to your customers, especially if they are major accounts with a large HP 3000 installed base. For example, HP-Draft drawings could be achieved in a 3000 data bank. DS13000 and HP Desk can also be used for data exchange.

HP 3000 Series 68 console update Todd Richman/CS Y

All is well with the system console for the HP 3000 Series 64/68. The HP 2647F with Clption 890 will remain on the Corporate Price List, ordered from Computer Systems Division (CSY), and is available to ship with HP 3000 Series 64/68 orders.

The long-term replacement console will be from the HP 150 product family. CSY is currently developing the software necessary for an HP l!50 to emulate the 2647F as a system console. This solution is scheduled to be available in the late spring of 11985. Until then, the HP 2547F remains as the only supported system console for the Series 6 4 / 6 8 . The HP 2647F Option 890 and associated power and cabling options will remain on the Corporate Price List until the replacement console i!; available. All other HP 264X terminals scheduled to be discon- tinued were removed from the Corporate Price List on February 1, 1985. As of that date, the HP 2647F with option 890 was transferred to CSY. CSY will only accept orders for the HP 2647F that include Option 890 and are ordered with a Series 64/68 system.

You and your customers can be sure that there will always be a reliable system console available for the Series 64/68. We will notify you as !joon as the long- term solution becomes available.

HPFA has been available on the HP 3000 Series 37 for about a year and a half now. Performance testing on the Series 37 is now complete, and the news is that APO will support HPFA with up to eight terminals on a 2M-byte Series 37.

Where shall we sell it? The "branch office" and small businesses are the areas to focus on. The best environment is one where they need instant access to their financial information.

How can we keep the cost of FA in line with the Series 37?Sell HPGA, the bundled, uncustornized version of H:PFA and HP Report Facility. HPGA sells for only $10,000, and will give your cus1:omers a full HP Ac:counts Receivable, HP Accounts Payable, anti HP General Ledger system. HPRF costs $5,000 and gives customers the flexibility they need to make better decisions. What kind of performance can our customers expect? The Series 37 acts comparably to the Series I11 and that is also true when running HPFA.

APO is continuing to work on ways of enrichin? the HPFA product offering. Within the next couple of months, you will be hearing about even more substan- tial performance improvements, some exciting new enhancements, and some new products to furth'er refine your customer's information flow and decision making capabilities.

MANUFACTURING MPN now expanded with HP Production Cost Management Andy Garcia/FSO

HP Production Cost Management, the newest addition to the Manufacturer's Productivity Network, is a customizable cost accounting system for manufac- turers designed to work with H P Materials Manage- mentl3000, H P Production Management13000 and the HPFA General Ledger.

HP PRODUCTION COST MANAGEMENT

MANAGEMENT

DESlQNED FOll MANAGEMENT YANUFAC'NIIWQ

ACCOUNTINQ

-11n.W E!iJ!Z+= H P Production Cost Management has been designed to help manufacturing management by providing information on work-in-process inventory and labor and material production variances. Information is available through a comprehensive series of reports and on-line reviews. These reports can be modified and new reports can be created using H P Report Facility (PIN 32310A1, an H P report writer for added flexibility.

Two selling opportunities

Production Cost Management gives you two ways to win. Since it integrates several MPN solutions, you can sell to your existing manufacturing systems installed base. By having a cost accounting capability you can also be competitive in sales to new customers who a re looking for comprehensive MRP 11 manufac- turing systems.

Features

Some of the features which impressed the Beta test site and will please your customers are:

Exception reporting which focuses on specific customer information needs rather than generating superfluous reports. T h e reports can be requested by users without programmer assistance. Beta site management said, "There are good, timely reports at the summary and detail level. There is no need to look through reams of data; there is always a report that seems to pinpoint the problem."

Obtain cost control through variancing. Variancing implements the management by exception princi- ple. Variance reports use either standard costs or current costs a s requested by the user.

Data flows from Materials Management13000 and Production Management13000 or can be entered on-line.

Variance reports provide material usage, yield, substitution, scrap, and discrepancy variances. Labor variances report efficiency, yield, scrap, and discrepancy information. Substitution and discrep- ancy variances help manufacturing management

1 locate production problems not usually found by cost systems.

How to qualify a customer

A few items to keep in mind when selling Production Cost Management are:

Materials Management13000 and the Standard Product Costing module a re required for implemen- tation of Production Cost Management.

T h e Product Evaluation Guide (PIN 32920-90301) can be used by the customer to self-qualify.

Cost fields and overhead application a re based upon the information developed in Standard Product Costing.

Production Management13000 and HPFA General Ledger are not required. If Production Management13000 is not installed, labor informa- tion can be supplied through a user developed batch interface or entered on-line. H P Interface Facility (PIN 32311A) is recommended for this situation. Production Cost Management can also be interfaced to other general ledger systems.

Customers who expect to spend time learning and working with the user exits, and who allocate the time, can be very suc- cessful and satisfied with the results achieved.

Simply specify your name, entitylsales region (or COMSYS code), departmentllocation code or sale of- fice, account or I 0 number, mailing address, telephone number. and shipping method. Your office will be billed for the cost of the kit (approx. $175-225) and freight charges.

DISTRIBUTION User exits enhance HP SFD/3000 Carol McDonell/IRO

T h e user exits in HP SFD13000's major sales order entry programs have added a new dimension to system tailoring for our customers. These exits allow our sophisticated users to augment the processing functions already in SFDl3000 to handle some of their special needs such as additional edits, reports, look- ups, other pricing, and additional end-of-order processing.

I t is important to remember that there are limitations to what can be done via user exits. If customers or prospects intend to write a user exit to work around SFDl3000 or to obtain additional capabilities, they will have to review the user exit documentation for either SOE or SOREGULR programs to determine if it is feasible and to verify that the data needed is available to user exit routines. If any doubt exists regarding the feasibility, the SE or SR should call Information Resources Operation field support or sales support. In general, a user exit should be considered only after all other possibilities have been thoroughly explored. In some cases a user exit has been proposed to achieve something that is already standard in SF1)/3000.

It is also important to set customer expectations. User exits can provide valuable capabilities, but customers must know that to write one requires that they become thoroughly familiar with the standard

Load scheduling improves system performance Ron Wade/IRO

During a performance round table discussion a t the recent SIGSFD (Special Interest Group for System for Distributors) users group meeting in Atlanta, an HP SFDl3000 customer stated that the one single thing that did the most to improve the system's perfor- mance was load scheduling. He went on to explain that he had noticed there were times when the system was underutilized, and other times when everyone seemed to be trying to do their whole day's work a t once.

/'-)

In analyzing the jobs done on the machine, he realized that some jobs had to happen at certain times - like the sales order ent ry function, which peaked in the afternoon - but others were more flexible. By restricting processes like report writing and check printing to the off-peak times, he was able to spread out the system load, and the result was a much better utilization of the machine's resources. Some users were not used to having to schedule their work, but they did have to admit that system response time was greatly improved, and they soon got used to the new routine.

While several other customers agreed that they had also discovered this performance improvement tech- nique, an alarming number acted like this was some- thing they had never thought of. Their idea of man- aging the system was to allow their users total unrestricted access to the computer. Thei r jobs cen- tered mainly around "crisis management" and mak- ing excuses for why response time was so poor.

I have since heard from some of the attendees who have put this suggestion to the test, and this one change has made more performance improvement than anything tried before. This shows one benefit of users group meetings. What may be an obvious solu- tion to one user can be a hidden nugget of gold to '7 another.

DataCheck 1 indicates signal activity when placed be- tween the computerlword processorlterminal and another device (such as a modem, multiplexer, and printer). This breakout box needs no batteries and therefore is ready to use anytime. It comes with 24 LED indicators, 25 breakout switches, plastic case with accessory storage space, five interface jumpers, an RS-232 cable, an operator's manual, and an instructional booklet.

DataCheck 2 is a more powerful diagnostic tool than DC1. It displays a greater range of signal activity, thus allowing the user to identify a wider range of com- puter problems. Extra features such as a pulse trap

(for detecting signal glitches), voltage output pins and a battery saving device make DC2 an easy tester to use. It comes with 2.1 LED indicators, 25 switches for easy identification, an RS-232 cable, patch jump- ers, scope pins, two 9-volt batteries, storage areas for batteries and accessories, an operator's manual, and an instructional booklet.

Selling OEM means a big re turn on your investment of time. San Diego Division (SDD) has the sales tools to help you profit from OEM selling. Here are the tools to help you sign and develop your potential and cur- rent plotter OEMs:

40% demo development plotter discount

A powerful tool for potential OEMs that are develop- ing software for H P plotters or for existing OEMs that would like to include our plotters in their system dem- onstration sites.

On-line technical support

SDD provides both hardware and software support for OEMs who have specific questions or problems with our plotters.

Competitive OEM discount schedule

H P plotter discounts are competitive with the indus- try. Since the discount is based on the total number of plotters that an OEM purchases, your OEM can choose from one or all of HP's family of plotters.

Drop shipment H P will ship the plotter directly to your OEM's customer. This saves your OEM the cost of reshipping the plotter from his site to the customer's site.

Extended warranty (Exhibit OW)

For OEMs who choose to inventory H P plotters, we can provide them with a warranty extention of up to 90 days. This helps ensure that your OEM's customers will receive a full new product warranty. Note: The warranty begins on the date the OEM ships the plotter to the customer (up to 90 days from the date of shipmeti t for HP). Worldwide service

H P plotters are serviced in over 39 countries. For OEMs who do not have an established service organization, HP can support their customers with our excellent field service organization.

PRINTERS HP 2687A functionality comparison Steve Berube/BOl

The HP 2687A is an excellent office ]printer providing exceptionally high-quality print, a heavy usage level for the office environment, and functions very well as a shared department printer. However, the HP 2687A's functionality depends on the application package driving the printer. HP's office text process- ing software offers various subsets of' the total feature set available with the HP 2687A. The package which best supports the HP 2687A in an office word pro- cessing application is HP Word. A coinparision of HP 2687A features supported by the HP text processing packages is shown in the following table. As a further functionality comparison, the HP 268'7A is compared with the HP 2130112 daisywheel printer. a HP 2687A functionality comparison

Many customer:j have purchased the HP 2687A lo act as a line printer. As a line printer it offers 132-column printing, but this function requires the Line Printer font cartridge (PIN 92186R) and a user-written pro- gram. The HP 2687A is escape-sequence driven rather than control-code driven, thus it may not be supported by most existing line printer applicatic~n programs. Furthermore, current HP application packages such as HPFA, HP SFDl3000, MMl3000, and others that 'have been written to support standard line printers will not support the HP 2687A without making special modifications to these software packages.

Contact the appropriate HP application software divi- sions if special nlodifications are desired.

Note: None of these packages ulill support the 66-line- per-page specia1,fimware available with the HP 268 7A.

HP 2687A now prints 66 lines Per page Steve Berube/BOI

Boise has received many field requests to enhance the HP 2687A to print 66 lines per page. This feature is now a reality. It allows the HP 2687A to print 66 lines per page in a portrait format and better meet your customers' office needs.

With the new 66-lines-per-page firmware installed, the HP 2687A will offer two new features: (1) print 66 lines per page in a portrait format and (2) pro-vide carriage return with linefeed suppression as an alter- nate underline technique. This firmware was targeted for the OEM market, but will work well for those customers driving the HP 2687A with their own specially-written application software. Testing with HP Word, TDP, and HP Slate indicate that these rsoft- ware packages do notsupport these new features. Furthermore, these new features are not prograrn- matically selectable. For example, it is not possible to shift between 60 and 66 lines per page via program control. The printer will be fixed at 66 lines per page in portrait format with the new firmware installed.

COMPlJTER NEWS For HP Use Only 39

Many of you have customers who use their HP 2687A as a system line printer (though it is not formally sup- ported as such). With the Line Printer font cartridge (PIN 92186R) and a user-written program, the HP 2687A will function quite adequately as a line printer emulator for many applications. Unfor- tunately, the new 66-line-per-page feature supports portrait format only and cannot be used to enhance current line printer applications. Please be aware that none of the H P applications packages (for example HPFAl3000) support the H P 2687A as a line printer.

For those of you who have customers interested in this new feature, it can be ordered as a special printer option or upgrade kit from Boise Division. Please con- tact Boise Division Market Development Department for a price and availability quote.

HP IDSCHAR obsolete S teue Berube/BOI

With obsolesence of the H P 2647Fl48A graphics ter- minals, IDSCHARl3000 is also obsolete. Supporting IDSCHAR on the HP 262X terminals would result in a product no sooner than November 1985. This IDSCHAR product void, combined with future prod- uct schedules, resulted in obsoleting IDSCHAR. Therefore, a s of second quarter 1985, IDSCHAR will enter its five-year support life cycle. IDSCHAR will be tested on selected future MPE MIT versions and problem fixes will be made as necessary to keep the product functioning through its five-year support.

At first glance this appears to be a major blow to laser printer sales. IDSCHAR has been a valuable sales tool from a demonstration standpoint, but don't overlook the use of IDSFORM instead. Also, two new Output Design Centers, one in Europe and Boise, are now available to meet customer needs for special symbol design. For those "hard core" customers who absolutely need an IDSCHAR design capability, there is always the 264X solution. Systems Finance1 Remarketing Division (FRD) should have a limited stock of used HP 264X terminals for these situations. Contact FRD Market Development for details.

T h e IDS13000 product will continue to consist of both IDSFORM and IDSCHAR, but only the IDSFORM subsystem will be forrllally supported. T h e price of IDS13000 will remain $4,000 (factory base price) for the master "A" version.

TERMINALS New industrial bar code wands now available Jerry Erickson/SMC

New industrial bar code wands are now available for applications and environments that require a rugged wand. These new wands offer the following features:

Solid metal case

Gasket seals

Replaceable sapphire-ball tip

0 to 3 5 degree scan angle.

T h e package design and internal construction of our new industrial wands enable them to survive severe impacts, either to the tip or to the side of the case, and also to stand up to wet environments.

There are two versions of industrial wands: the H P 16840A general purpose industrial wand and the H P 16842A high resolution industrial wand. T h e HP 16830A wand has a visible red (700nm) sensor and should be used in applications which require read- ing high, medium, andlor low resolution bar codes, including dot-matrix printed bar codes. T h e HP 16842A has an infrared (820nm) sensor and should be used in applications where only high resolu- tion bar codes are being read. In fact, the HP 16842A is the preferred solution in these applications.

T h e HP 16840A and 16842A are currently available only on the HP 39800A and 39810A bar code readers. They may be ordered with these readers by specifying the correct no-chargeoption when ordering. PIN 16840A Option 400 and PIN 16842A Option 420.

T h e wands are also available as replacement parts through Corporate Par ts Center (supplier 1500) and Personal Computer Distribution Operation (supplier 6000) and may be retrofitted on existing H P 39800A and 39801A bar code readers. Retrofitting is easy because the H P 16840A and 16842A have reading performance similar to the wands originally available with these readers - the HP 16830A and 16832A.

SCAN-TECH '84, a successful show for bar codes in manufacturing Francis Scarella/GPCD

T h e largest bar code show ever, SCAN-TECH '8.1, closed its doors on Thursday, December 6, in Cincin- nati, OH, under the applause of all the participants.

With approximately 6,000 visitors, with their level of knowledge in bar code, and the number of leads we received (about 400), this show was by far our best investment in the bar code area in 1984. Literature has been sent to' those requesting it along with a cover letter by Mike Cialane, CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) program manager a t Manufacturing Systems Group, and copies of the list have been for- warded to field marketing managers.

Among the 120 companies who had exhibits, HP had the largest and most attractive booth with the widest line of products displayed. All the products - readers, printers, components - were highly success- ful. These products were demonstrated on third-party software from Peripheral Software (HP 3000) an.d Industrial Computer Corporation (HP 1000). During the show, a large number of decision makers from major manufacturing companies came to talk to d.ivi- sion product managers in order to make their final decision.

GPCD displayed 1 2 workstations (HP 3081As an'd H P 9291Xs), which represented our largest participa- tion ever. T h e innpressive "fishtank" demo for the H P 3081A, intended to give customers the confidence to place the terminal in harsh environments, brought a lot of visitors to the H P booth. With the help of .the November issue of the H P Journal (which featured an extensive article on this terminal), the demo raised people's awareness of the industrial quality of our. products.

COMPIITER NEWS For H P Use Orlly 41

HP's bar code hardware, manufactured in five divi- sions, represents nearly $40 million in annual sales. T h e leverage on other products is estimated a t around $200 million. As an example of our progress, the annual unit growth for Grenoble Personal Computer Division (GPCD) bar code readers is 300'Lil.

Jean-Marie Kauffmann, terminals marketing manager at GPCD, showed SCAN-TECH '84 visitors that HP is prepared to put bar codes in harsh enviroriments.

Why this OEM chose HP for bar codes Ray Bitterman/lVeely Sacramento

System Integrators, Inc. of Sacramento sells fault- tolerant publishing systems that run on Tandem com- puters to newspapers around the world. I proposed the H P 3081A industrial workstation terminal to meet their bar code needs for an ad tracking system.

It turns out that bar code terminals from many ven- dors were evaluated. T h e HP 3081A was selected because of its clear alphanumeric display, its design for rugged environments, and the fact that it boasts safety approvals on an international basis. Systems Integrators. Inc. has installations in the IJS, Europe. the Far East, and the Middle East. They want to be sure that the system and all its components are universally accepted.
