24 hour Shoppette on Belvedere The Exchange Mini-Mall HVAC pro-ject is scheduled to start on Mon-day, 02 April. The project is a base initiative to upgrade the HVAC in the existing Mini-Mall complex. One of the requirements for the work to be completed is to have the retail sales floor closed for a 30-day period while the contractors complete the ductwork in the main retail sales floor. The Exchange understands closure of the retail sales floor will affect the service to the community. In order to minimize a disruption of service, the Northgate Express will open 24 hours during the time-frame the Mini-mall is under reno-vation during the month of April. The proposal is the following:. Beginning Monday, 02 April:

Mini-mall hours of operation will be 0600 - 2000 hrs for a minimum

of 30 days during the construction period. Mini-mall will be limited to a

very small assortment of retail items (tobacco, and carbonated beverages).

Popeye's will not be affected by

the project and will be open regular hours of operation. Barber Shop, Laundry Alternations and Laundromat

will not be affected during this period.

Northgate Express will begin 24 hour operation starting on Mon-day, 02 April until the Mini-mall project is completed. Appropriate marketing initiatives to inform the community of these changes will occur, and further changes will be update in this Flash as well.

Drainage work outside Mt Belve-dere entrance gate has been de-layed from 19 Mar 2012 until the 26th of March 2012, this work will take three weeks to complete. Closing of roughly 1000 feet of one lane will take place on a daily bases during the median work. They will pull the barrels and signs into the median each night and reopen all lanes. Road construction of the intersection of Military Rd and Mt Belvedere will start immediately after and will last approximately two weeks.

2012-2013 MG James Ursano Scholarship Program

for

Dependent Children of Active, Retired and Deceased Soldiers

GENERAL INFORMATION

Army Emergency Relief (AER) is a private non-profit organization with the primary mission of providing

financial assistance to Soldiers and their dependents in time of valid emergency need. The MG James

Ursano Scholarship Program was established in 1976 as a secondary mission to help Army families with

undergraduate college expenses for their dependent children.

SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS

The MG James Ursano Scholarship Program offers scholarships based on financial need as evi-

denced by information submitted on the FAFSA. The MG James Ursano Program also offers scholarship

funds for academic excellence and leadership/achievement.

The MG James Ursano Scholarship Program is not an entitlement and applications are not auto-

matically approved.

The MG James Ursano Scholarship Program will not be awarded to any student for more than four

academic years, for second undergraduate degrees, or for graduate degree programs.

The scholarship funds are mailed directly to the school and are split evenly between the fall and

spring semesters, terms or quarters. The funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, and school

room and board (either on or off campus).

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Student must be enrolled full time as an undergraduate student for the entire academic year at a

school accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. (Because financial need is already met, students

attending Service Academies are not eligible.)

Student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale

Student must be a dependent of a Soldier on federal active duty, of a retired Soldier, or of a de-

ceased active or deceased retired Soldier.

To be a dependent, the student must:

Be under the age of 23 (Eligibility ends at the end of the semester/term in which the student reaches

their 23rd birthday. Example – turning 23 in December would mean the scholarship would be awarded for fall

term ONLY.)

Be registered in DEERS

Remain unmarried for the entire academic year.

Not be a member of the National Guard, Reserves, or other active duty military branch

DOCUMENTS AND DEADLINES

1. APPLICATION – APRIL 2, 2012

The 2012-2013 MG James Ursano Scholarship Application is available on our website,

WWW.AERHQ.ORG after December 1, 2011, and must be submitted online by April 2, 2012. If it is not

possible to submit the application online, a paper application may be requested using the contact

information at the end of this document.

2. TRANSCRIPTS – APRIL 2, 2012

Transcripts must include the student’s fall 2011 grades and cumulative GPA based on a 4.0 scale.

Unofficial transcripts are acceptable as long as they include the student’s name, school name, and

cumulative GPA based on a 4.0 scale.

3. 2012-2013 STUDENT AID REPORT (SAR) – MAY 1, 2012

The FAFSA requires an annual application and can be completed at www.fafsa.ed.gov after January 1,

2012, for the 2012-2013 Academic Year. The result from the 2012-2013 FAFSA Application is the

2012-2013 Student Aid Report (SAR) which can be downloaded from the FAFSA website and

submitted to AER. We require the COMPLETE SAR – please see our SAR instructions for more

information.

4. FEDERAL TITLE 10 ORDERS (if applicable) – APRIL 2, 2012

If Soldier is Title 10 Active Guard or Reserve, submit a copy of orders showing federal activation for the

entire academic year (August 2012 – May 2013).

5. CASUALTY REPORT (if applicable) – APRIL 2, 2012

If Soldier died while on active duty, submit a copy of casualty report.

History of Maple Syrup

An old Iroquois legend describes

the accidental discovery of the sugar-making process. A hunter returned to his dwelling and found an enticing sweetness in the air around the kettle in which his mate was boiling meat. The fluid in the kettle, he learned, was sap and had been collected beneath a broken maple limb. To make their sugar, the Indians would cut a slash in the maple tree and collect the sap as it dripped out. Logs were then hollowed out, and filled with the fresh sap. White-hot field stones were then added to cause the sap to boil. The Indians would process the sap through the syrup stage to end with crystallized sugar, which did not spoil when stored.

When the first European settlers ar-rived, the Indians traded maple sugar with them and eventually taught the settlers the secrets of the maple sug-aring process.
