“Choosing a tender is a bit like choosing a wife,” a captain once told me. “It is difficult and expensive to change later if you don’t like it.” The superyacht tender realm is certainly one that sees a lot of hasty marriages and bitter separations. The honeymoon period that follows a whirlwind first date at a yacht show or love-at-first-sight with a tender in the pages of a magazine can quickly end when you and your crew realise that it isn’t exactly fit for purpose.

We’ve all heard crew grumble about their yacht’s tenders and the often-humorous/sometimes dangerous tales of tender disasters. Soggy transfers, manoeuvring through ice floes near Norway in a limousine tender or dropping windswept guests off for red-carpet events in a sturdy, no-frills RIB; when considering how you are going to use your yacht, you should consider how that will

affect what you need from your tender. While it is tempting to buy based on looks alone, appearance can distract from important realities.

If there is anything I have learned from chatting to owners and captains it is that with any yacht-related purchase, forethought is key. Your intentions may initially be to go exploring away from the milk run – adventures that will require a tender that can stand up to various tests from harsh environments – but if you decide to charter or use your yacht for a season in the Med,

a more forgiving, luxurious tender will be required. The prospect of a bouncy journey from anchorage to shore in a rugged RIB wearing heels and a cocktail dress is unlikely to delight guests.

According the most recent Superyacht Golden Ticket survey conducted by The Crew Report, the average monthly spend in season on new tenders and toys for yachts between 50m and 69m is e84,991.20 out of an average monthly OPEX of e975,841. Off-season it goes down to e48,177.30. That is almost 10 per cent of the monthly operational expenditure that goes to purchasing new tenders: e1,019,894 a year. Compare this to the average monthly maintenance spend on existing tenders and toys during the season at€e14,722.55 – just over one per cent of the average monthly OPEX. It is hard not to wonder if researching and intelligently

selecting a more suitable tender in the first place could drastically reduce the figure for new purchases. Spending less on new tenders and toys and slightly more on existing, fit-for-purpose ones makes much more sense.

So why are tenders and toys typically the most griped about part of a yacht? A problematic tender can be the bane of an engineer’s life, while an ill-suited one can leave a bad taste in a charter guest’s mouth. Most captains will agree that lack of knowledge is the main reason for unsuitable and unpopular tenders being purchased. “It is a common misconception that the tender is just a little rubber boat for the crew to dispose of rubbish with,” says Captain Herbert Magney. “It is typically the number one method of transport for all guests as one group to and from the yacht at anchor with at least two crew.” Like Magney, almost all captains will advise that owners make a list of the activities the tender maybe be used for.

The tender is the lifeline for the yacht, her crew and guests, so while it may be simpler to go for the same make and upgrade model that you are used to or that is on the yacht already, reviewing what is available and enlisting specialist advice will make life easier and it will be better for you and your guests in the long run. Seeking guidance from your broker, yacht manager or an independent tender expert is always useful, but ultimately, nothing can beat listening to your captain and/or crew. “The crew are probably the best placed to give good advice,” stresses Eddie Cooney, captain on board 73m M/Y grace-e, a sentiment that most captains will agree with. “The crew will have operated a variety of tenders and will have to operate and maintain whatever is purchased.”

There are a huge number of tender builders and models and it is easy to get overwhelmed by the options. Now in its third year, The Superyacht Owner’s ‘Tenders

and Toys Guide’ is here to help. In these pages you will not only find valuable articles on driving and handling, storage, deployment and retrieval and practical advice from captains, but also over 25 brands showcasing the best of what they can offer – a tender lookbook if you like – that will enable owners to research what is available, what is suitable and what is worth investigating further.

Happy shopping.

1Suitability for use The first step when choosing any tender is to identify what the tender’s

primary use will be. “Tenders intended only for the transportation of persons ashore and tenders used for diving support or game fishing need a totally different customised design and different equipment,” explains Captain Massimo Marras. “Another important aspect to consider is if the new tender will have to carry small children or mature people. In this case, a tender with a rigid and high freeboard is preferable.”

2 An intelligent designAn intelligently designed tender will be comfortable, dry and safe in all

weather conditions. Captain Mannie Avenia recommends a V-shaped hull, advising that a well-designed hull will ensure a comfortable ride in a choppy sea or on a longer trip; Captain Christopher Schaefer agrees that this is one of the most important aspects of a tender: “No matter what the tender is used for, it should have sufficient freeboard, be dry and offer a comfortable ride. If you are operating in remote locations where you are frequently confronted with beach landings in poorly charted and rough terrain, then

the tender cannot be too heavy and large.”Aesthetics are always going to be

important with a superyacht tender, but they should never take precedence over logic. “Do not have plywood sandwich on the floor of the tender, for example,” advises Captain Fernando Vallmitjana. “It gets damaged with time.” And Schaefer recommends that the colour of the tender should not be overlooked: “Ever tried to sit on a black pontoon of a boat that has been in the sun the entire day?”

3 StorageAn owner purchasing a new tender for an existing yacht will typically

find that options are limited by available space and weight restrictions on board. “Too often it is only possible to replace the old tender with the latest version of it, even though there is a much wider variety of choice,” explains Marras. He suggests that one possible solution is to register an additional tender as an independent small yacht with a dedicated crewmember driving and taking care of it. “Alternatively, the tender can be towed by the main yacht, but in this case the new toy is often like a ‘ball and chain’ for the captain,” he says.

Whether the tender is to be stowed on board or towed, Vallmitjana suggests ensuring that strong towing or lifting points are part of the tender’s design.

4 Propulsion“What are you trying to achieve and where?” asks Schaefer. “An Inboard

Performance System (IPS) is great for fuel efficiency, improved handling and reduced maintenance but is useless for beach landings. Anyone who has tried to go up mangrove swamps in a jet tender will know the next time to take a mask with them, because you will end up diving in to clear the jet pump.”

For Vallmitjana, jet tenders can get to beaches more easily and are risk free but they are not as efficient if the main purpose for the tender is for watersports. “A stern drive’s ability to trim reduces the wetted surface of the hull, which reduces resistance,” he says.

And what about speed? “If the owner is not crazy about speed, I would suggest the use of inboard diesel engines because they are safer compared to the powerful but bulky petrol outboard engines,” advises Marras.

THE PERFECT

10When it comes to selecting a tender for your yacht, there are a number

of key issues that should be taken into consideration that come irrespective of budget, size and preferred brand. Four superyacht

captains offer their ‘Perfect 10’: the 10 essentials that an owner should take into account when purchasing a new tender.

Page 8: teNDers & tOYs GUIDe

5 Engine noise levels“Unfortunately during my career I have dealt with more

than one plus 200,000-euro tender that had a distinct agricultural sound to it,” says Schaefer, who stresses the importance of buying a tender with a low engine noise. “Noise insulation will be dealt with in a very different way depending on whether the engine is outboard or inboard, four stokes or diesel and if it is a standard tender or custom built,” adds Avenia.

6 User-friendlinessCaptains are in agreement that simplicity is the key to

any tender; an excess of electronic gadgets often only cause irritation and problems. “If the tender is complex and has a lot of buttons it will require a lot of maintenance and that is far from what I need the crew to be spending their time doing,” says Vallmitjana. “For example, a tender definitely does not need three different bilge systems.”

All equipment fitted should be relevant. “A small open tender packed with electronics from bow to stern is a delight when all works,” Captain Schaefer says. “However, a tender usually operates in an environment that calls for a basic and solid engineering approach. Simple, waterproof on and off switches situated behind a water-resistant panel work much better than a touch screen display exposed to the scorching sun that melts the screen within a few months, rendering the entire electrical installation useless.”

7 ManoeuvrabilityLinked to user-friendliness is a tender’s manoeuvrability;

how simple it is to operate a tender and how it can adapt to different conditions will dictate how much time will be spent on crew training. “A varnished mahogany tender with a big flared bow, pronounced tumblehome and a single engine will look very cool, but will not be easy to deal with unless you have ideal conditions,” says Schaefer, who

adds that purists will never allow you to install a bow thruster on a craft like this, due to the classical design. Beautiful, big tenders can see inexperienced owners struggle to handle them and as a result increase anxiety among the crew every time they are launched. “An IPS drive, on the other hand, turns a novice into an expert driver in a very short time,” says Schaefer. “Jet propulsion has half the crew confused, and stern drives the other half.”

8 DurabilityThe quality of the build, right down to the details, will

ensure that a tender is built to last. From the materials used on the hull and the pontoons to the quality of the accessories, everything should be high quality. “How well the hull is constructed is important,” says Schaefer. “Will it survive a not-so-clever manoeuvre coming on to a dock? Will it result in the splintering of the hull laid up too thin?”

9 ServiceabilityIt goes without saying that the more difficult a tender is to

clean and the more complicated it is to access and repair installed parts, the more of valuable crew time will be spent on them. For Schaefer, ensuring that any repairs are easy to make is all the more important when it comes to more remote travel. “Attempting a repair on a complicated system in a remote location is challenging,” he says. “Swinging out

an outboard is easy enough anywhere in the world, but dealing with an IPS system is a completely different story. The Volvo technician out in the Galapagos Islands that had to deal with our 50-hour inspection to maintain the manufacturer’s warranty on our Volvo IPS600 system was perplexed by the entire package. It was quite obvious that he had never seen anything like it before.”

10 The ‘wow’ factorFinally, never overlook the importance of a

superyacht tender looking the part. “‘How cool is my tender?’ is the final question,” says Captain Schaefer. “Ever seen some poor soul cruising by your boat in a desperately embarrassing tender? The result is a quick look into the sky and a humble prayer: ‘Thank God that is not us’.’”

“A vArnished mAhogAny tender with A big flAred bow, pronounced

tumblehome And A single engine will look very cool, but will not

be eAsy to deAl with unless you hAve ideAl conditions.”

Driving the tenders and playing with the toys – that’s the enjoyable part, whether you’re an owner, crewmember or guest. But while it’s a lot of fun it comes with a heavy responsibility when it comes to safety.

As both tenders and toys become more heavy duty, insurers are getting a growing number of claims for accidents involving these so-called ‘toys’. In the last 12 months, for example, superyacht insurance provider Pantaenius has had claims for a night-time, high-speed collision resulting in damage to the third-party yacht, tender and injury to the yacht’s crew and guests; tender engine failures, due to overuse or lack of ongoing maintenance; and numerous jet ski claims, mainly down to inexperienced users colliding with the yacht’s swim platform.

When we put this in the context of the rising costs of the latest add-ons to hit the market, should owners be concerned? Most yacht insurance policies include tenders and toys, but not in every case. “Tenders are getting larger and more luxurious and their individual values can be very high, sometimes up to and over seven-figure sums. The overall sum insured on the insurance policy generally includes tenders and toys; as such, consideration needs to be given when

purchasing new or replacement tenders as to whether their value would have an effect on the overall sum insured on the yacht’s insurance policy,” advises Ian Hazelton, superyacht insurance broker at Willis. “As tenders are included in the overall itinerary of the yacht they benefit from the premium charged overall,” he adds. “In the event that they were to be insured separately, the chances are that the rate against value would be higher, therefore increasing the overall

premium.” Of course, there is no one-fits-all

superyacht insurance policy, and policies will respond differently based upon the incident: whether a crewmember or guest is involved or injured and whether there is material damage to the craft, to a third-party yacht or the yacht itself.

There’s one crucial area where the

LIsteN & LearN

The latest tenders and toys hitting the market are getting more complex, with different propulsion systems, hulls and handling characteristics, all of which make it more complicated for the person in the driver’s seat, whether that is

crew, owner or guest. We look at how to find the balance between fun and safety and the insurance implications that come with handling these luxury add-ons.

crew comes into this discussion, explains Michelle Van der Merwe, sales and administration for Pantaenius. “Some policies will exclude liability to persons who use the yacht’s tenders and diving equipment and who do not possess necessary licenses required by flag,” she warns. “Therefore it is essential that the owner, manager and captain reads their policy exclusions to understand what is covered.”

And this is absolutely key. It’s what all captains bring the tender and toy handling discussion back to and it’s the alarming failure to do this that is the reason these claims are being made. It all comes down to crew training.

While there is a new course on the market – the Superyacht Tender Operators course was launched by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and Professional Yachting Association (PYA) this time last year at the 2014 Monaco Yacht Show – most captains I have spoken to in the aftermath have voiced their concerns that this could lead to some slacking when it comes to on-board familiarisation training.

“The training has to be done on board with the equipment that you’ve got. You can’t set up a course to teach the aspects of individual yachts’ equipment. Yes, you can teach safety awareness, but people need to know exactly how the equipment that you’ve got works, how to do it safely and how to be aware of all the risk elements involved in the whole operation,” asserts Captain Mike Conquest of golden eagle.

According to Hazelton, this responsibility comes down to the owner. “Tenders are getting more and more technical with single or multi engines, propeller and waterjet drives, some even have bow thrusters. Additionally, there may be solid hulled vessels, such as the limousine tenders, or large rigid inflatables, all of which have their own and sometimes vastly differing handling characteristics,” he explains. “All crew whose role it is to operate these craft should be trained in the operation of each of the items on board.”

The new course is the result of a PYA survey, which made clear the lack of superyacht-specific education in the most common tender course – Power Boat Level 2 (PB 2). What it does include (that PB 2 doesn’t) is night-time training (an obvious necessity for superyacht crew driving guests to and from the dock in the late or early hours) and guest communication skills; PB 2 doesn’t teach you how to deal with a potentially rowdy group of slightly inebriated guests at 3am – the Superyacht Tender Operators course does.

A good captain will train his or her crew – many will even have a designated tender driver – but when it comes to tender and toy handling, handling the guests when it comes to enforcing safety-focused rules and regulations might actually be the trickiest part. For Hazelton, this comes down to the owner: “It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure that any guests using toys also receive adequate training in the operation of these to ensure as far as practicably possible that they are able to operate them safely.”

There is one toy in particular that is likely to cause a bit of controversy when it comes to being told what to do. “Obviously jetskis are the case in point, because everybody thinks they can drive one because they’ve hired one off a beach somewhere. But that doesn’t mean you can bring one safely back to a superyacht,” says Captain Conquest. “That’s the hard one, because you’ve got owners and very important guests, very wealthy guests, who say they can do it but probably can’t. That requires a careful look at how crewmembers cope with that situation and that comes from the top down, from the captain and first officer working through scenarios with the crew.”

With a well-trained crew – and I mean well trained on board, not just having ticked off the right courses in the classroom – the chances of accidents when it comes to tender and toy handling should be slim to none. But accidents do happen and having a well trained crew, and owners and guests who listen to that crew, should lessen the chances, and the consequential costs, of an accident.

parkING with styleAs superyachts continue to grow in length, so do the size and number of tenders on board, putting a greater demand on the need for fully

equipped garages that can safely deploy and retrieve tenders. We explore how the location of tender storage has changed and asks where the best

place to house a boat is.

In a market that demands intelligent and sleek design solutions that make life easier, it is no surprise that designers and owners alike push for ideas that hide features of a boat when they’re not in use, such as retractable cleats to mirrored or picture-covered television screens. Commonly located aft on the lower deck, the tender garage has evolved over the past 30-40 years, offering a multi-use space when toys have been deployed. However, it is only in the past few decades that private yachts have had the space to allow for tenders to be concealed below deck.

“Fifteen to 20 years ago, most tenders were deck or transom door stowed,” explains Richard Watson, CEO of Pascoe International. “The progressive move to larger yachts, which rely more heavily on tenders for both guest transport and operational support, means that yacht design now puts a greater priority on tender stowage.”

Watson reveals how this has led to less open deck stowage and more shell door arrangements. There are a number of reasons for this move, but the most compelling is safety. The launch and retrieval of a boat on the

foredeck adds additional layers of complexity with the need for long-line davits that have to clear the bulwark and extend the length of the hull to the water. “It makes sense from a safety and operational point of view to have tenders stowed close to the waterline,” says Gunnar Vikingur, managing director of Vikal International.

By locating a garage aft of the engine room and close to the waterline, the lifting distance and handling risk is minimised, Vikingur explains. This, combined with a shell door hinged in such a way that the door can be opened up or

teNDers & tOYs

down depending on what is required when the tender is out, is an ideal combination. “From a tender builder’s perspective, the position of the davits or overhead cranes is the most important factor when trying to achieve the optimum weight distribution between the davits/cranes and hooks,” he says.

While there have been a number of ideas developed and built for the swift and stylish launch and retrieval of tenders – such as drive-in tenders bays – the most common is alongside a superyacht. “There is some discussion that a transom door is more protected, but there can be significant motion at the transom while there is less between there and amidships,” says Watson. “I don’t believe drive-in tender garages are an ideal solution. We’ve seen them work well, but the efforts to create the solution can outweigh the benefits.”

The Englishman goes on to reveal that while launching a tender on the side of a vessel is the most practical solution, it is important to consider the balance between the stable lift provided by three or more crane points and the operational issues of connecting those points if the yacht and tender are moving in swell.

“An ideal situation is where the tender is lifted by a three-point lift – two aft and one forward,” agrees Vikingur. “The weight distribution between forward and aft should be 50/50 and the davit/crane rope used should be a high quality soft fibre.” Vikingur goes on to point out that safety can be enhanced by fitting the davit/crane rope with a light hook and by limiting the lifting distance to one metre or less. He also pointed out the importance of fitting limit switches to crane equipment to prevent a tender from colliding with the ceiling of a garage. “When considering safety, I always recommend using soft slings wherever possible.”

While having the right location, equipment and qualified crew are all vital to the safe launch and retrieval of a boat, the tender garage itself has to provide adequate space for crew to

manoeuvre the boat safely. Owners often want to have the largest tender possible, but a certain amount of space is needed for the safe operation in the garage. “Sometimes only 30mm or 40mm of clearance is provided in places,” says Vikingur.

“We often see a steady reduction in real space available during a build,” adds Watson. “While it is unacceptable to add equipment in guest spaces, the tender stowage areas often become the location to install electrical boxes, fire systems and fuelling stations.” With this knowledge to hand Watson and his team have learnt to be prepared and have designs that are tailored to this issue – such as Pascoe’s 9.6m limos, which fit nicely within a ‘10m’ garage.

Space allocation is a constant battle for the design community as designers strive to make the most of any and all available space on board. However, with superyachts continuing to grow in length, how could we see garages develop? For Peter Buescher of Donald L. Blount Associates, the answer may come from the tenders themselvesL “While an owner doesn’t want their tender to be visible all the time, when it is visible they want it to be an expression of their personality, just like their yacht is,” says the designer, who predicts that while the trend of hiding tenders is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, the increasing popularity for fully custom projects could lead to garages that display tenders as works of art in a similar way to classic cars. “Maybe we will start seeing glass doors that showcase their tenders. not likely to change is the location, as there are only so many places you can put tenders and I think people have experimented with pretty much all of them.”

For those wanting to maximise the space on board, shadow vessels provide an alternative solution that allows an owner to take advantage of a vessel’s interior. For Italian designer Mario Pedol, founder of Nauta Design, a shadow vessel is a good solution especially for a sailing yacht owner. “Unless you have a very big 80m-plus sailing yacht, a shadow vessel is advisable, as this can take the size of tender needed to perform all the duties expected. On a motoryacht, it is more or less the same story, but for a yacht around 30-40m,” says Pedol. “On our recent 130ft project, there is a 4.2m crew tender, which is housed in the opening transom, while a 45ft shadow vessel follows the mothership.”

A shadow vessel provides owners with the option to have as many toys as they wish within reason without compromising on space on board the mothership. This in turn allows for a smaller yacht to be built, broadening the number of marinas available to moor in and reducing costs of running and maintenance. With more shadow vessel solutions entering the market such as Lynx Yachts’ 23.9m YXT ONE, featured in issue 15 of The Superyacht Owner, this affordable solution is a strong alternative and could become ever more popular.

The series, designed by Michael Peters Yacht Design, emulates the grace and beauty of the traditional water taxis of Venice, yet the look is of an elegant modern classic that will complement any sophisticated superyacht design. The attention to detail and quality of execution from this superyacht builder is second to none. While the aesthetics of these tenders are exceptional, the performance characteristics of the hull design are equally impressive. 340 Sport opencenter console Nor-Tech 340 Sport has become one of the most popular mid- size centre consoles on the market. Power options range from twin outboards to quads. No matter the power, the 340 will ease on to plane and maintain plane at very slow speeds. Thanks to the hull design, visibility is

In rough water the hull quietly absorbs the impact of the heavy seas while keeping the occupants dry. Top-end performance and fuel efficiency are second to none for its size, and you can equip yours with your choice of power and options, leaving the rest to us.

Additional touches include two built-in drink coolers, which keep the cockpit free of clutter and your drinks cold. 390 Sport openThe 390 is a popular choice for yacht owners to be used as a towing tender. In 2014 the console/helm station was totally redesigned and deck improvements were made. The new, sleeker look has features that include more room for large GPS screens, more leg room, a new expansive port light, sky light and hand rails for the

sun lounge. Deck enhancements offer forward cockpit hand rails, built-in bow seat cup holders, and the 390 now comes standard with a swing in dive door.

The 390 will plane with little or no bow rise and can maintain a planing speed near single digits. The stepped hull has no adverse handling effects while yielding top speeds and fuel efficiency beyond the competition.

Sl 8m limousineFollowing the success of the SL 9.6m range, the SL 8m has been developed to offer a fully appointed semi-custom limousine tender to yachts with more restrictive garages. The SL 8m limousine has been developed to offer the same superb handling and sea keeping as the 9.6m but all within a limited space. The forward cockpit houses the helm station and guest boarding area, allowing the guest cabin to be positioned centrally to ensure comfortable passage from yacht to shore. With the option to select fully integrated AV systems, bespoke finishes and interior design to complement the mothership’s guest areas Pascoe International are now able to offer a full range of limousine tenders.

Sy9 beachlanderThe SY9 range has been designed as a multi-role yacht tender offering the space and layout to cater for the needs of any large yacht. The hull features an innovative bow to reduce length without compromising deck space. The key feature of the SY9 Beachlander is a hydraulic opening bow ramp which enables elegant and safe access to the shore, while also offering an open deck layout for easy passage of guests from the ramp right to the swim platform. Other features include a bimini mast that hydraulically lowers to provide sun protection whilst retaining a low profile stowage height.

More and more owners of existing or future superyachts are deciding to take a personal submersible on board their vessel. This was unthinkable just a short while ago as submersibles were generally considered too big and too heavy for operations from a superyacht. The necessary adjustments to the submersible and the yacht itself were often deemed to be overly complex and costly. Since the recent introduction of the Super Yacht Sub 3 circumstances have completely changed. Market leader U-Boat Worx has overcome all these perceived obstacles with this new submersible.

Super yacht Sub 3The Super Yacht Sub 3 is an extremely compact and safe submersible, specially designed for diving operations from a superyacht. Height and weight are no longer insurmountable complications for a yacht owner to enjoy the subsea realm. The Super Yacht Sub 3 is extremely easy and safe to sail to a depth of 300m. As an added bonus and heightening the guests’ experience, the passengers can fully control the submersible, under direct supervision of the pilot.

Sports limousine 7.5An ultimate convertible vessel, which is designed to maximise volume, versatility and comfort, the Sports Limousine 7.5 is a unique and intelligent superyacht tender. Built with comfort in mind, it has a deep V hull and interceptor trim tabs for a comfortable ride. A wide reverse chine minimises spray, keeping the vessel dry, whilst also increasing planing efficiency. The stern drive is set in from the aft of the vessel, and sliding stern doors provide uninterrupted access, allowing for seamless rear boarding and use of the swim platform. The electric bow thruster enhances manoeuvrability, which provides optimal accessibility and performance.

dive expeditions, overnight adventures and shallow-water superyacht tender

The 19m Dive and Adventure Tender was conceived to allow the owner and a few guests to go into areas not available to the mother ship. With a draught of less than one metre for a 60ft or 19m vessel, this dive and adventure tender is one of the largest superyacht tenders ever built and provides superyacht comfort to the owner with all the comforts of a fully fitted galley, master cabin with en suite and all the equipment for diving, including compressor for charging dive bottles and the ability to go into areas many smaller vessels cannot reach. It needs a large mother ship but does provide exceptional alternatives and comforts to the owner.

Vikal’s major projects since incorporation in 1982 have been large superstructures for a Western Australian superyacht builder and this progressed to total yacht construction in advanced composite with three vessels, from a 37m to a 51m ultra-high-speed motoryacht with a central sprint turbine.

In recent years Vikal has specialised in custom designed and built immaculately finished superyacht tenders from 7.5m to 19m, and the list now totals 54. The company recently launched the first three-piece fully automated hard top convertible – an extremely complex piece of composite and computer engineering.
