ParentingAs a result of First Steps Parenting andFamily Strengthening Investments…• The parents of more than 4,200 SC
preschoolers participated in more than 45,000 First Steps-funded parent education home visits during FY08 alone
• Both the adult and child participants in First Steps parent education strategies are making measurable progress, with scores on a research-based measure of interactive literacy behaviors increasing by an average of 15% during FY08.
Child CareAs a result of First Steps Child CareInvestments…• Child care centers enrolling nearly 10,000 SC
preschoolers received more than 6,500 technical assistance visits from First Steps staff during FY08 – with these centers improving their average Environment Rating Scale scores by 17% during this period.
• First Steps provided training to more than 6,000 SC child care providers during FY08 alone.
• Nearly 2000 high-risk SC preschoolers accessed high quality child care during FY08 as a result of FS-funded scholarships.

• Quality– Ensure limited resources for SC’s children are dedicated to services whose
impact on readiness is well-documented in research
• Accountability– Strengthen focus on student outcomes, data, and research
• Collaboration– Build more rigorous collaborations among ALL school readiness partners to
leverage existing resources and strengthen systemic improvements which benefit all SC children
• Leadership– Ensure decisions are made with key stakeholders in a timely, data-driven
manner to assure quality services to children
