Exodus 20:9-10

Six days you shall labor and do all your

work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath

to the LORD your God. On it you shall

not do any work, neither you, nor your

son or daughter, nor your manservant

or maidservant, nor your animals, nor

the alien within your gates.

Exodus 20:11

For in six days the LORD made

the heavens and the earth, the

sea, and all that is in them, but he

rested on the seventh day.

Therefore the LORD blessed the

Sabbath day and made it holy.

Page 12: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

Not an “aimless” rest!

Page 13: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

But a “God-focused” rest!

Page 14: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

Exodus 20:10

But the seventh day is a Sabbath

to the LORD your God.

Deuteronomy 5:15

Remember that you were slaves in

Egypt and that the LORD your God

brought you out of there with

a mighty hand and an outstretched

arm. Therefore the LORD your God

has commanded you to observe the

Sabbath day.

Exodus 31:13

You must observe my Sabbaths.

This will be a sign between me

and you for the generations to

come, so you may know that I am

the LORD, who makes you

holy.

Page 21: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

The Sabbath was to be

a God-focused rest!

Observe the Sabbath, because it

is holy to you. Anyone who

desecrates it is to be put to

death; those who do any work on

that day must be cut off from their

people.

Mark 2:27-28

Then he said to them, “The

Sabbath was made for man,

not man for the Sabbath. So the

Son of Man is Lord even of the

Sabbath.”

Page 32: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

Are we to observe

this fourth

commandment?

Page 33: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

Nowhere in the

New Testament are

we commanded to

observe the Old

Testament

Sabbath.

Page 34: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

Romans 14:5

One person considers one day

more sacred than another;

another considers every day

alike. Each of them should be fully

convinced in their own mind.

Colossians 2:16-17

Therefore do not let anyone judge

you by what you eat or drink, or with

regard to a religious festival, a New

Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

These are a shadow of the things

that were to come; the reality,

however, is found in Christ.

Page 36: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

Are we to observe

this fourth

commandment?

No, but . . .

Page 37: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

The New Testament

church did begin to

observe Sunday as

a day marked out

from other days:

a day to gather

together for

worship and

instruction.

Page 38: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

Acts 20:7

On the first day of the week we came together to break bread.

Paul spoke to the people and,

because he intended to leave the

next day, kept on talking until

midnight.

Page 39: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

1 Corinthians 16:1

Now about the collection for God's

people: Do what I told the Galatian

churches to do.

Page 40: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

1 Corinthians 16:2

On the first day of every

week, each one of you should

set aside a sum of money in

keeping with his income, saving it

up, so that when I come no

collections will have to be made.

Revelation 1:10

On the Lord’s Day I was in the

Spirit . . .

Ignatius of Antioch

(disciple of the

Apostle John)

In 114 AD he wrote that

Christians were to be“no longer

living for the Sabbath, but for

the LORD’S DAY.”

Page 43: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

Can we, should we

forget the whole

concept of the Old

Testament Sabbath?

Page 44: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011
Page 45: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

The Lord’s Day can become the

most important day of our week, if

we use it for our desperately

needed R & R!

Page 46: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

Leviticus 23:3

There are six days when you may

work, but the seventh day is a day

of sabbath rest, a day of sacred

assembly.

Page 47: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

Q 103. “What is God’s will

for you in the fourth

commandment?”

A. “. . . and that, especially on

the festive day of rest, I

regularly attend the assembly

of God’s people to learn what

God’s Word teaches . . .”

Page 48: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

The Lord’s Day is graciously given

to us by God as a day for R & R!

Page 49: Ten words of grace #4 june 12, 2011

Matthew 11:28

Come to me, all you who are

weary and burdened, and I will

give you rest.
