Ten things to consider when buying a log cabin

1. Quality of the timber

All our Gudrum Log Cabins are manufactured from high quality, slow grown North Eastern European and Russian spruce. Our timber is sourced from sustainable forests in these cooler climate countries because the wood is closer grained and heavier. The more open grained woods have a greater tendency to twist or warp.

2. Always use a good preservative

It is really important that your log cabin timber is properly treated to encourage a long life. We suggest every part of your log cabin should be preservative treated for durability. Some of our Bertsch Log Cabins feature a Larch wood base - a wood with a high natural oil and resin content and is very resistant to the normal decay associated with untreated wood.

3. Pressure treat base beams

Every part of our log cabins that are in direct contact with the ground is pressure treated. Pressure-treated wood will give your log cabin longevity meaning it will last for many years and in all the seasons, protecting the timber from rot and insects.

4. Build on a solid base

Your log cabin should be built on well prepared, level and solid base is ensuring a long lasting build. Cabins should at least always have a base as large as the floor.

5. Corner Jointing

Because we use an extremely good quality timber that can be manufactured to fine tolerances it means we can produce very well sealed corner joints that fit together firmly and create a very sturdy finished building. Slowly grown Russian timber works particularly well and thereby produces a beautifully machined surface and excellent corner jointing.

7. Insulated Log Cabin

We supply log cabins that offer roof and floor insulation. If your log cabin is to be used as an extension to your living area e.g. garden office, play room or games room, then we advise the roof and floor insulation as this does have a clear benefit in terms of creating a more stable and regular temperature inside the cabin and minimising exposure to extremes of weather, both hot and cold, when inside the cabin.
