Contractor: Deconstruct UK LtdCompletion Date: September 2010
Sector: Construction
About the Project:
New basement area to provide teaching areas(as part of a fundamental refurbishment plan)
at St Patricks Church, Soho.
Deconstruct created a new basement area underSt Patricks Church.
This involved MoLAS having a watching brief on excavation over structures preceding its construction dating back to 1778.
Creating the new basement included supportingstructures and the creation of a basement area 22mby 9m wide to a depth of 4m.
Other fundamental structural alterations were carried out to bring this historic structure firmly into the 21st century.
Project Challenges:
There were significant temporary works designs and installations on this project, some supporting retained historic features and in particular the marble pulpit.
Significant amounts of soil were removed over a busy public footpath into Soho Sq. Listed structures within the Church had to be protected and supported throughout the works.
MoLAS operatives were present throughout the dig phase of the project and integrating our safety culture and processes onto those operatives was very successfully delivered.
