How is TEL Funded?

TEL is a $2 million dollar project

TEL is administered by the Tennessee

State Library & Archives, a division

of the TN Secretary of State’s office.

Funds for TEL are provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the State of Tennessee, and pledges from Tennessee Libraries.

IMLS is a federal grant-making agency dedicated to creating and sustaining a nation of learners by helping libraries and museums serve their communities.

New tools at the article level• Mp3 read speaker- reads the entire article aloud for you or just a

sentence or unfamiliar word.

• Translate – this was always available (the read speaker will not read the translated page out loud) however they have added Arabic , Russian and Polish

• Marked items list- Save items to your account

HeritageQuest Online• Heritage Quest is an excellent complement to Ancestry Library.• 1930 is partial because it hasn’t been typed in yet. They need to

individually rekey them to make them searchable. However, the information is in Ancestry Library.

• Each of the six modules (or tabs at the top) are searched individually (no federated searching).

Census• 1830, 1840,and 1850 Census is not searchable but researchers can

browse those years• Under Browse Census on the left hand side look under “Help with Federal

Census”– FAQ about the Census and has a blank census forms (from 1790-

1930)– Includes history of the Census- how it got started, why it got started and

why some years were different. In 1790, only the head of the household name was taken but this changed over the years

Census –Advanced Search• You see a scanned view of the original. • Navigation:

– Zoom—200%, 100%– Positive and Negative view to help in reading – Subpage A & B is for big pages to see the broken up pages.– Top Right is the jump to next Page & Name navigation

• Click the Add to Notebook check box [the page refreshes] and then add note popup---click to save notes.– Notebook notes can be found at the top but are only good for one session, from log in to log

out. But you can now email, print or download the document and your notes will print too.

How to Crop and Print an Adobe Image• Adobe is the best way to print and Adobe

9 does work despite not being listed on their help page

• First Download the image

• Locate “View in Adobe Acrobat”, click View

• Need to add camera icon. Right Click on a blank spot on the toolbar

• Find snapshot tools at the very bottom of the list –mark it and click ok

• Click Print icon from Adobe toolbar

• Click radio button “Selected Graphic”

• Make sure page scaling is on “Fit to Printable Area”• Under Properties Change size

Accessing LearningExpress LibraryNew User Registration
