“12Vdc or 24Vac” - what sort of power supply should I use ?

A: The simple answer is the

most suitable one for the

circumstances ! A few things to

consider:

* DEVICE POWER CONSUMPTION:

Current draw when powered

by 12Vdc will be approximately

double the current required

from a 24Vac supply. Not usually

an issue for small f ixed body

cameras, but significant for PTZ’s

and IR I l luminator equipped

cameras.

* CABLE DISTANCE & TYPE:

Long cable runs and l ight gauge

cable can result in significant

voltage drop. The use of 24Vac is

generally a better choice - within

certain l imits. Remember, Ohm’s

Law can be used to determine

SIM & a single antenna !

The Cyturion family of GSM & 3G models is available as back-up only (Protector / Protector 3G) and back-up + panel data transmission (Pro-Data / Pro-Data 3G ).

Protector models provide basic PSTN back-up functionality, with a suite of SMS based command & control features.

Protector is equipped with 8 digital inputs and 8 digital outputs (3 of which are SMS controllable) and an onboard battery charger.

Pro-Data models share all the features of the Protector range, with the addition of an on-board modem data pump (MDP).

The MDP allows fuss-free upload & download of control panel programming data via a GSM / 3G circuit switched data bearer. Panel programming functionality is virtually identical to PSTN / copper connectivity and is accomplished using a single SIM and a single antenna. 3G models (both Protector & Pro-Data) have been extensively tested for remote area operation on the Telstra Next G Network. Frequency specific hi-gain antenna systems (both directional & omni-directional) are available for Next G operation.

It’s the Law . . . .Ohms Law ! There is a fixed relationship between voltage (Volts / V), current (Amps / I) and

resistance (Ohms / R). In the security industry, it is this relationship that influences the correct operation of electronic security equipment connected to long (and sometimes not so long) cable runs.

It is possible to use Ohm’s Law (or an online calculator based on it) to determine the correct cable type for satisfactory operation. Careful selection of the correct cable type / gauge, rather than simply installing whatever cable happens to be on hand at the time, can mean the difference between a reliable, high performance system and one which fails to meet customer / installer expectations.

The longer the cable run between the power supply and the powered device and the more current that the device draws, the greater the problem becomes (voltage drop) - this can be complicated further by devices which do not exhibit constant current draw (such as PTZ cameras, heaters / blowers & infrared illuminators) and installations that have been pre-cabled for power using CAT5 / CAT6 data cable rather than multi-strand figure 8 security cable.

V = I R (Volts = Amps x Ohms)

I = V / R (Amps = Volts / Ohms) / R = V / I (Ohms = Volts / Amps)

An example: You have a 12Vdc security device with a manufacturer’s rated current consumption of 250mA Given a cable run of 100m, using 24 x 0.02 figure 8 security cable (manufacturer’s stated resistance approx.5 ohms) and a 13.5Vdc 2.5A Tactical power supply, the predicted approximate voltage drop can be calculated as follows:

V = A x Ω ~ 1.25 (Voltage drop) = .25A (device current consumption) x 5Ω (resistance of the cable)

With a 13.5Vdc supply we would expect the operational voltage measured at the device to be approx 12.25Vdc (13.5V - 1.25V)

Actual voltage may be lower due to termination resistance, temperature and cable quality - always allow an adequate margin.

Toroid TransformersTactical 24Vac models (including rackmount) have featured toroidal wound transformers for many years. Toroid transformers are simply the most energy efficient and reliable devices available for the purpose.

If you were to ask most installers for their thoughts on the key to high performance, reliable CCTV system operation, you would likely receive a mix of

responses: “good quality cameras”, “ a decent DVR / NVR”, “ suitable camera placement” or perhaps “correct lense selection”.

Seldom, if ever, would the use of correctly specified, quality power supplies be suggested.

A troubling fact when a high percentage of system performance and reliability issues can be traced directly to inappropriately specified or incorrectly installed power supplies and/or their associated cabling. While many integrators will spend time researching and specifying appropriate cameras, recorders,

illuminators, multiplexers, etc, often the last thing considered is the power requirements for the job.

This then leads to the use of the “cheapest” supply that appears will do the job, which in turn often influences not only system performance, but longevity. It’s usually after the second or third service call that the penny finally drops and the possibility of a power related problem is considered - a costly exercise at best.

Installers and resellers share a legal responsibility with manufacturers & importers to ensure the products they install or supply comply with Australian Safety Standards

The Australian electronic security market is flooded with poor quality, low cost power supplies.

Temptation to use these devices is high - but can you afford to risk the consequences ?

Installing, importing or selling non-complying electrical goods carries extremely harsh penalties.

Fines of up to $220,000 for an individual or $1.1M for a corporation and equivalent civil

Please take the time to read through a few of the key points below, then ask yourself :

“Why take the chance ?”

Do the security power products that you install or resell comply with Australian Electrical Safety

& EMC Standards ? (All Tactical products meet or exceed Australian Standards)

In recent years there has been a marked increase in the number of security power products sold

which do not comply with Australian Standards - either electrical safety or EMC.

Let’s face it, most security power supplies look like simple metal boxes and often the “cheapies”

outwardly appear to be similar or the same as genuine compliant products. It’s only upon closer

inspection or pointed questioning of your supplier as to the legal compliance status of the item

in question that the real picture emerges. Very often these inferior products not only fail to

comply with even basic safety standards, but due to the poor quality of components and overall

design, they represent potentially life threatening electrocution and fire hazards.

Products which fail to comply with Australian Standards are potentially electrically unsafe and

are more susceptible to causing harm to people and property. If you are an installer, contractor

or distributor who buys or installs electrical products that don’t meet Australian Standards, you

could face fines plus civil and/or criminal action.

What are the legal implications ? Under Australian law, whoever initially imports a product is

legally recognised as the distributor of the product. They are also directly liable should the

product fail or cause harm.

If proven that an installer knowingly installs product that doesn’t meet the Australian Standards

they can be deemed liable for any damage or death caused by the installation of faulty goods.

If the installer’s conduct does not meet reasonable standards and there is a high risk of causing

death (as could be the case for example where a power supply is supplied either without a mains

lead or with the mains lead not installed and the installer connects it) severe penalties could

occur - as well as potential criminal charges (including manslaughter).

Simply selling, installing or importing non-complying electrical goods could render you liable to

substantial penalties - any resultant loss or damage will not be covered by insurance. This could

result in further civil action and potentially run into millions of dollars, depending upon the

severity of the loss or damage.

So ask yourself, when weighing the initial cost saving against the potential for (at best) poor

performance or (at worst) potential penalties and legal action:

All models feature short circuit & overload protection, small physical footprint and low thermal output and are ideally

Cyturion Protector models feature alarm back-up with PStn interface, SMS control & monitoring, 8 optically isolated inputs, 8 optically isolated outputs and an onboard battery charger.

Cyturion Pro-Data models incorporate all the features offered by Protector models, with the addition of an onboard Modem data Pump (MdP) the integrated MdP allows remote upload and download of alarm panel programming data via a gSM cSd bearer - simply connect to the panel as you would using a standard copper PStn line. combined alarm reporting and data upload / download functionality are accomplished using a single SiM and single antenna - data transmission made simple !
