Introduce the Technical Skill

Get the Team’s Attention

Arrange the Team So Everyone

Can See and Hear You

Name the Technique and

Explain How It Is Used.

Teaching Technical and Tactical Skills

Demonstrate and Explain the

Technical Skill

Demonstrate and Explain

Relate the Technique to

Previously Learned Techniques

Check for Understanding

2

Keep demonstrations brief; tell athletes one or two things they should watch for

Part to Whole

Whole to Part

Have Athletes Practice the Right

Technique

Have the Athletes Practice the Technique

in Game like Situation

Keep Practice Short and Frequent When

Teaching New Technique

Use Practice Time Efficiently

Make Sure Athletes Experience a Reasonable

Amount of Success at Each Practice

Make Practice Fun

Correct Errors or Evaluate

Observe and Evaluate

Performance

Use Video

4

You can observe a lot by

just watching – Yogi Berra

Video can help athletes see

their errors and learn to

correct them

Have a Positive Approach in Correcting Errors

TECHNICAL

Providing Effective Feedback

• The sooner you give feedback, the more likely the athletes will

remember what the feedback pertains to and to practice

correctly

• More frequent feedback is better than less frequent feedback

• When an athlete is making several technical errors, it is best o

correct only one error at a time

• Feedback to feed back exactly what was done. When athletes

performed incorrectly, you should feed them back what they

did wrong. Then explain how to do the technique correctly.

• Both explanation and demonstration should incorporate

specific feedback.

REMEMBER THIS…

TECHNICAL

Questions for Reflection

• When you introduce a technique to your athletes, how do you

get their attention, and how o you arrange them so they can see

and hear you?

• Which techniques that you teach could be broken down into

parts, and which should be taught as a whole? How do you

decide?

• How can you correct errors by using a positive-feedback

approach?

TACTICAL

Players with excellent tactical skills have a “Game Sense” , or

what you called “The ability to use understanding of the rules; of

strategy; of tactics; and, most importantly, of oneself to solve the

problems posed by one’s opponents” – Alan Lauder

Game Sense

Tactical Knowledge

Reading the

situation

Decision-making

skills

Should a runner go out hard or lay back for a strong finish? It’s tactical decision

There are many ways of winning the game. Take advantage of your

teams’ strengths.
