DESCRIPTION

A basic outline for a training session for teaching staff. The core of the training is the pedagogy the lesson is based on. In other words, where teachers have lost their sight of pedagogy or one has never existed this training should pull some threads together. These threads consist of 1 Connecting & Focusing 2 Stretching 3 Transferring & Assessing 4 Extending. A separate presentation will follow which is the lesson plan pro forma which supports the process: 'Planning For An Outstanding Lesson'

What precisely do I want pupils to do in this lesson?

Lesson objectives are…

What is taught and learned - what the pupils

should know, understand, be able to do, or

be aware of as a result of the lesson.

Page 4: Teaching An Outstanding Lesson

What advice would you give an NQT who planned these objectives?

Pupils should finish writing their stories.

Pupils should move from Level 6 to Level 7.

Pupils should be reflective.

Pupils should get better at listening.

Writing Objectives: Useful Stems

By the end of the lesson pupils will:

• Know that…(Knowledge: factual information)• Develop/be able to…(skills: using knowledge, applying

techniques, analysing information)• Understand how/why…(understanding: concepts,

reasons, effects, principles, processes)• Develop/be aware of…(attitudes and values: empathy,

caring, sensitivity towards social issues etc)

Objectives may also focus on how pupils learn

What are the issues/implications of getting

your department to plan Learning objectives

in this way?

Page 7: Teaching An Outstanding Lesson

How do we share learning objectives with pupils?

Useful Strategies:

Page 8: Teaching An Outstanding Lesson

All our lives long, every day and every hour,we are engaged in the process ofaccommodating our changed andunchanged selves to changed and unchangedsurroundings; living, in fact, is nothing else thanthis accommodation: when we fail in it a little weare stupid, when we fail flagrantly we are mad, when we suspend it temporarily we sleep, whenwe give up the attempt altogether we die.

Samuel Butler, The Way of All Flesh

Connecting and Focusing

Think of a lesson that you have taught

recently that was successful in connecting

pupils into learning and framing their minds

for learning. What did you do?

What are the issues/implications of getting

your department plan activities like this?

Page 10: Teaching An Outstanding Lesson

How do staff know about the needs of the children in their class?

• Pupil progress data

• SEN and Gifted and Talented registers

• IEPs

• EAL assessments

• Liaison with specialist staff eg. LSAs

• Liaison with other members of the department

Page 11: Teaching An Outstanding Lesson

Stretching

• Look at the lesson plan.

• What do you notice?

• What suggestions would you make?

Page 12: Teaching An Outstanding Lesson

What are the issues/implications of getting your department to plan in this way?

Transferring and Assessing

• How will pupils assess their learning?

• How will I know all pupils have met the learning objectives?

• How will this be assessed/recorded?

• How will I know that pupils have had a positive learning experience in my lesson?
