Training your dog to stay can be a challenge at first. To make things a lot easier begin the training session in a familiar environment – free from any distractions. Have sufficient supply of treats your dog loves to be used as rewards. Dogs are motivated by praise and rewards to perform well.

After your dog can give his attention to you, the lesson can be started.

3. Keep him sitting then say “Fido, stay” in a clear and firm tone. To teach a dog to stay is not the same as teaching him to do tricks and games where the tone of your voice can be the kind of coaxing and cajoling. So, give him “stay” command in an authoritative voice so that he knows that you are serious in this matter. Stay command can prevent dangers of your pet or everybody around him.

The next level of the training:

1. Give your dog ‘stay’ command then try to inch away

from your dog. Gradually increase the distance.

2. Teach him to obey this command in the standing or lying down positions. Your dog must not change positions during the ‘stay’ command.

3. Now, after your dog can stay put after you give him the command, it is time to practice him with distractions. Ask a member of the family to give a sound or talk. Your dog must not move and stay in his position despite of all the distractions.
