These are the steps 1. First position yourself and your dog at the same direction.

Your dog must stand at your left side while you hold the leash across in front of you in the right hand.

2. The objective is your dog will walk beside you at will and the leash is not to keep the dog in place. In other words the leash should slack between you and your dog.

3. Reinforce your dog to give all his attention to you and train him to focus on your commands. When the dog doesn’t listen, pull the leash.

4. When your dog is reacting to the pull, make him watch your command. Make no further correction unless he doesn’t obey you.

5. To teach a dog to heel more easier, you will need to have pet’s full attention. Stand and place your dog beside you, then call his name, pat his head, make a sound, or say something like “look” or “look at me”. hen he looks at you, slap your left hip to command him where he should be while heeling. Practice this for few days and soon enough your dog will catch the lesson.

6. If your dog decides to forge or run ahead, allow him to reach the end of the leash then turn to the right and walk to a new direction. In this way your dog will be surprised or confused and will forcibly follow you. When your dog catches you up, give him praise and reward him with treats. Repeat this procedure when your dog walks ahead of you.

When your dog lags behind, call his name, lure him to come or pull the leash gently. When he comes, praise him. Remember you are the one who lead the way, not him.

7. When your dog lag, don’t get panicked or keep pulling him. Most dogs lags because he feels unsecured or afraid. You have to give him encouragement but don’t coax him. Here’s what you have to do. Remember to hold the leash on your right hand crossing in front of you and your dog beside your left thigh. When you step forward but your dog lags, the leash will give a jerk causing him to catch you up. If this will not help, use a command like “Right here Fido” and slap your hip. Once dog comes next to you allow the leash slack then give him praise, pat him on this head or give him reward. Don’t be discouraged if your dog lags again, all you have to do is repeat the session. Be patient and soon enough your dog will know that walking is fun.

8. It is normal that initially your dog will stop and sniff at something that interests him. Ignore this and keep on walking. Your dog must have the habit of keeping up with you and it’s not your job to get his attention during the walk. You are the boss and you are the one who gives him rules. A trained dog will look at you as the leader to ask for guidance when a cat comes across to you rather chases it off.

The above methods usually work well for many dogs and the bond with your pet will become closer. However when your dog is a little difficult and harder to train it doesn’t mean that he’s a bad dog. Dogs are smart animals; it is you, the master who needs to work harder to make him obey you. It may take a few days or may be weeks to teach a dog to heel, but if you have patience and are consistent in your training, and reward him accordingly, your pet will soon respond eagerly to your “heel” commands, and corrections will no longer be required.
