Tea Bags!!!

Thomas Sullivan a New York City tea merchant is said to have come up with the idea of tea bags in 1908. He used small silk sample bags and sent them out to potential customers. Although in years to follow many innovations were made and the 1920s became known as the decade of the tea bag.

Obviously our old tea pot hasn’t been used in years due to technology such as the electric kettle and a little later the cordless kettle.

Page 4: Tea Research

With modern day tea bags and a cordless kettle making tea has become a very fast process and it can take less than 2 – 3 minutes to make a cup. In my house the process of making tea isn’t really thought about, someone just shouts ‘stick the kettle on’ and normally one person makes up the tea.

Afternoon Tea!

In the early 1800s it was tradition only to have breakfast in the morning and dinner later in the evening. The idea of Afternoon tea was not a tradition until Anna the 7TH Duchess of Bedford claimed she got a ‘sinking feeling’, as the evening passed. She thought a good way to solve this problem was to have a pot of tea and a couple sandwiches. As she started inviting friends over the trend soon caught on and until this day it still exists.

I feel nowadays people opt for the choice of coffee over tea just because it has more caffeine and helps them remain alert on stressful days. This may also be as a result of large chains such as Starbucks selling so many different varieties.
