Rahy Dead cont. from p1

Rahy, a $2-million KEEJUL yearling purchase bySheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, began hiscareer overseas with trainer Sir Michael Stoute, winning

the Listed SireniaS. and placing inthe G1 Middle ParkS. at two. Heannexed one ofthree starts duringhis sophomoreseason, then wasshipped to the U.S.and transferred toNeil Drysdale forhis 4-year-oldcampaign. Rahyposted a 10-lengthvictory in the GII Bel Air H. at

Hollywood Park and concluded his racing career withrunner-up efforts in Santa Anita=s GIII Goodwood H.and GIII Harold C. Ramser Sr. H. Three Chimneys purchased a 50% interest in Rahyfollowing his retirement in 1989, and stood him inpartnership with the Maktoum family for the duration ofhis breeding career. His stud fee reached as high as$100,000. ARahy is one of the most important stallions we=vehad,@ Three Chimneys President Case Clay said. AAs astallion, he had a profound and lasting impact on thebreed and was integral to the development and successof Three Chimneys. He was truly a world-classinternational sire.@

Bred by Hill >n= Dale Farm in Kentucky, Rahy is out ofCanadian Horse of the Year and two-time championolder mare Glorious Song, who is a full-sister tochampion Devil=s Bag and leading sire Saint Ballado.Glorious Song also produced multiple championSingspiel (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}). Rahy will be buried in the Three Chimneys stallioncemetery. AHe was the ultimate >great things come in smallpackages= kind of horse,@ stallion managerSandy Hatfield said. AHe was really a little s--t! Hekicked harder and faster than any of the otherstallions, but that definitely wasn=t a reason not to lovehim. I have so much respect for that horse. We=ll misshim a lot.@

Video, courtesy Racing UK. Crius opened his account on debut in a Warwickmaiden July 7 before adding a novice event on the JulyCourse here 22 days later. Runner-up in a mile nurseryat York=s Ebor meeting Aug. 20, the bay filled thatsame spot in the Listed Ascendant S. at Haydock backat that trip last time Sept. 3. He showed plentiful speeddropped back in distance to put some smart reputationsto the sword in this intriguing affair. Leading theeventual third-place finisher Zip Top as that pair racedalone towards the stand=s side, Crius was on top overallbefore the quarter pole and never looked caught as thefavorite Farraaj made heavy weather of the task inhand. AI gave him an awful ride at York and when Imade the running on him at Haydock on slow ground, Ithought I should have gone faster, but with the tailwindtoday I let him rip,@ jockey Richard Hughes said. AI knewif I was quite near to the rail and he was getting tired Iwouldn=t have far to go to get to it. This was a little bitsharp for him and he=s a big, tall horse who has done usproud today, so maybe we=ll leave him off for the year.We wouldn=t put him down as our Guineas horse, buthe=s decent and could go for the Craven.@

MORE BLUE LIGHT? Newly moved to Newmarket from Ascot, today=s G1 Shadwell Fillies= Mile features Lyric of Light, whobids to extend her unbeaten record for a stable whichhas enjoyed a purple patch with its juvenile fillies so farin 2011. Her neck defeat of J “TDN Rising Star” JFallen For You in Doncaster=s G2 May Hill S. a fortnightago was characterised by some late wandering and thistough test, which was originally the target of her stablecompanion Discourse (Street Cry {Ire}), comes upquickly on the back of that run. ALyric of Light is ingood form and she has improved since Doncaster,@trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni said. AShe came on a lotfor her first start at Newmarket and I hope that she haslearned plenty from the May Hill S., because she wasstill very green. She has improved with every start thisseason, so I am hopeful that she can continue herupward curve.@ Whether Fallen For You can reverseMay Hill form is debatable, as she appeared to besecond-best with no excuses that day. But connectionshold her in the highest regard and the manner of herdebut success on the July Course here July 30suggests she could be out of the top drawer. Samitar, who took the G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot June 17,was 3 1/4 lengths behind that duo in the May Hill.Other interesting prospects could be the unexposed pairAlbamara and Firdaws. Both daughters of significantGroup 1 winners, the former scored by four lengths atEpsom Aug. 30

Firdaws opened her account in a seven-furlongmaiden at Salisbury Sept. 1. AFirdaws is obviously a fillyof great promise,@ the owner/breeder Sheikh Hamdanbin Rashid Al Maktoum=s Racing Manager Angus Goldsaid of the Roger Varian trainee. AShe won inworkmanlike fashion at Salisbury, but I hope that wasdue to the ground--it was very dead that day and shedidn=t quicken like she did at Newbury [on debut]. Themile is going to be in her favour and she will like theforecast faster ground at Newmarket. We don=t know ifshe is good enough to win a Group 1, but it would beparticularly fitting if she did.@

FINDING HIS VOICE This newly upgraded part of the Champions= Serieshas attracted a disappointing turnout, with last year=sG1 Queen Elizabeth II S. winner Poet=s Voice looking toput a below-par comeback effort in the G2 CelebrationMile behind him. Only seventh in that Aug. 27Goodwood contest, he is joined by EmeraldCommander, who needs to find improvement on hislatest third in the Listed Fortune S. at Sandown ninedays ago. APoet=s Voice came out of his Goodwood runvery well and he has improved for that race,@ trainerSaeed bin Suroor commented. AHe did a very goodpiece of work on Saturday and he looks physicallybetter than last month. This is the right trip for him andI am hopeful that he can run a better race this time.Emerald Commander has been working well lately and Ihave been pleased with his preparation.@ Sir MichaelStoute puts forward Tazahum, who has progressed allseason and put up one of his best efforts when a latestsecond to the subsequent G3 Arc Trial winner GreenDestiny (Ire) (Marju {Ire}) in York=s G3 Strensall S. overa furlong further Aug. 19. A SHARP TRIO Godolphin hold the aces in the juvenile fillies=category this year and send an intriguing trio in thisearly 1000 Guineas pointer headed by the G3 PrestigeS. runner-up Rakasa. The choice of Frankie Dettoriholds the re-opposing Questing on the form of thatAug. 27 Goodwood contest. Desert Gazelle earned a J “TDN Rising Star” J tag with a four-lengthwinning debut over six furlongs at this town=s JulyCourse July 9 before failing to build on thatperformance when only fourth behind Discourse (StreetCry {Ire}) in the G3 Sweet Solera S. over sevenfurlongs of the same strip last time Aug. 6. That formhas received a boost after the fifth-place finisherWahylah (Ire) (Shamardal) took the ,100,000Tattersalls Millions race here recently and she hasanother chance to confirm her initial promise. Minidressis no back-number. The Al Zarooni trainee was animpressive four-length winner of a seven-furlongmaiden on the Sweet Solera card. ARakasa surprised usa little at Goodwood with how well she ran and hasimproved a little bit since then,@ Mahmood Al Zaroonicommented. AThere is a bit of a question mark overhow she will cope with the ground, but she is in goodform at the moment. Minidress has also improved forher debut, but she is still a little weak. She is a toughfilly and we will find out more about her ability.@ Saeedbin Suroor said of Desert Gazelle, AShe won nicely onher debut, but we were a little disappointed with herlatest start. She came out of that race very well andworked nicely on Tuesday morning. She deservesanother chance in a group race and I am lookingforward to seeing her run well.@ Albaspina beat a lessercrew in a Carlisle maiden on debut Sept. 7, but therewas a lot to like about the way she went through therace. The grey is yet another from the famed Alruccaba(Ire) dynasty to run for Kirsten Rausing and Sir MarkPrescott.

A day earlier, Adena landedthe Big Brown--Cold Awakening colt that made$140,000. Adena also purchased the $1.35 millionAwesome Again--Legs Lawlor colt who topped sessionfive. Roberts commented on the Proud Citizen miss. AShewas a lovely filly,@ he said. AShe=s from a good familythat, all the way down the page, produced good fillies. We thought she was astandout today.@ Roberts admitted theprice was a bit more thanhe expected. AI thoughtshe=d probably go for$75,000 or $80,000, buton the day, both pedigreewise and as an individual, she was a standout. Andthose are the ones thatsell.@ The filly=s 8-year-olddam, the Horse Chestnut(SAf) mare In Return, wasa classy performer on thetrack for Jayeff B Stablesand trainer Alan Goldberg, setting or equaling courserecords at Monmouth not once but three times. In Return was put through the Keeneland NovemberSale in 2009 with this filly in utero. Tall Oaks acquiredher for a modest $32,000, and recouped the purchasedprice over three times over yesterday. Tall Oaks, a

Canadian-based operationowned by the Hungarian-bornIvan Dalos, is best known asthe breeders of Classic winnerVictory Gallop. AI only get a horse fromIvan every now and then, which I greatly appreciate,@said Kitty Taylor. AIvan racesa lot in Canada, but this fillyis a Kentucky-bred--she wasraised at Nick and Rose Lotz=sBriarbrooke Farm out in Paris.

She was a really correct filly with very good vetting, and big for a Proud Citizen, which is unusual. And shereally stood out in this book.@ Taylor=s second score on the afternoon, the MidnightLute--Per Se filly, was also being sold for a Canadian-based owner. AI=ve never met him [breeder BeclawatStable=s Leslie Pereira], but Tonya Johnson from RedGables Stud gave him to us as a client, which again Ireally appreciate. Tonya had raised and prepped her. This filly was another one where the owner wasn=treally happy with the placement in Book 5, and didn=tdecide until about 30 days ago to send her. But itworked out, because she was just a star in this book. She had eight scopes. I=ve seen a number of theMidnight Lutes myself, and my feedback from peoplewas that she looks just like her father.@

The filly was produced by the 9-year-old DeputyCommander mare Per Se, a full-sister to MGSP HolidayLady and SW My Main Starr, and a half to group winnerPutra (Dixie Brass). She hails from her champion sire=sfirst crop. Leslie Pereira is the retired owner and CEO ofBeclawat Manufacturing Company, a manufacturer ofwindows and doors forships, airplanes, buses, etc. Pereira has bred, among others, 2005Canadian Horse of theYear A Bit O= Gold, as wellas Eishin Missouri, anearner of over $1.5 millionin Japan. Taylor added of her fineBook 5 afternoon, AI wantto especially thank Mark Roberts and Adena Springs forbuying the fillies and wish them all the best.@ Adena was plenty busy Thursday, buying four of thefive top-priced yearlings and 12 prospects overall. Thatpushed Adena=s overall ledger to 37 horses bought for$4,466,000. While that=s an average of $120,703,Adena has played at every level of the market; no fewerthan 14 of those buys, for instance, came on bids of$50,000 or less. Bill Oppenheim was a thought provoking speaker atthe Pedigree, Genetics & Performance Conferenceearlier this month, and I am glad that the TDN took timeto reproduce his talk it its entirety (TDN 9/21/11). Billraised some interesting points in his talk, which I wouldlike to take some time to comment on. First was the issue of >false positives= in pedigreeanalysis. As discussed at the conference, theThoroughbred is not a good model for breedimprovement: there is a long intergenerational gap(mares and stallions are generally 10 years old beforewe find out their worth), mares are able to produceonly one foal a year, and we have a very poor methodof evaluating genetic merit.

When you actually deal with it every day, thewastage or misallocation of resources when it comes tomatings is truly mind-blowing in this industry, especiallywhen compared to other breeds with far less moneythat use better measurements of breeding merit andgenomic-based selection tools and get better and moreconsistent results. Bill=s assertion that he is more interested in looking atsuccess rather than opportunity is one that I have(unsurprisingly) a dissenting view on. The odds, as Billput it, are indeed against success; however, I believethat--within the context that we selectively focus onthe subset of information that appears to reinforce ourestablished "picture" or viewpoint--the more dataavailable to breeders equals better decisions beingmade. If the data is not presented to the contrary, as it iswith the TrueNicks Enhanced Report and in otherEquineline products, breeders would be none the wiser, believing that one or two successes is repeatable andfurther misallocating resources resulting in continuedwaste. Environments of asymmetric informationinvariably result in adverse selection. Cont. p12

Letter to the Editor Cont.

While there are plenty to choose from, a goodexample here is the Storm Cat stallion Forestry. Whenhe retired to stud many thought that he was a >lock= toappreciate Mr. Prospector line mares. His own sire haddone well with them, and Forestry was from the familyof Mr. Prospector (for whatever that is worth). To date, there have been 308 foals by Forestry out of Mr.Prospector line mares for 11 stakes winners. It is not agreat cross for Forestry and he has done much betterwith mares from other broodmare sire lines. The oneson of Mr. Prospector that has done well with Forestryis Fappiano. He is the sole exception. Mares by his sonsand grandsons have produced 76 of the 308 foals for 5of the 11 stakes winners, including this year=sPreakness winner, Shackleford. The data, when it is presented for intelligentinterpretation, tells the story. When it comes to Mr.Prospector line mares, unless you have a Fappiano linemare, there are better options than Forestry. TrueNickscurrently rates the generic Forestry/Mr. Prospector linenick a AD@ and the Forestry/Fappiano nick a AB+.@ Nickshas both as an AA.@ I have to think that presenting thedata, as we do in the TrueNicks Enhanced Report, givesbreeders the opportunity to not only evaluate how thecross has done (as we display the number of times ithas been tried), but also the quality of the horses thathave been bred on the cross. As predictive as the ratingis, a considerable proportion of the report=s power liesin its reflective nature, its ability to show where geneticaffinity has not occurred. This knowledge puts breedersin a far better position than they were blindly relying ona rating without any data context. Even considering the long intergenerational gap thatThoroughbreds are produced upon, I also can=t seem tofind agreement with Bill=s statement that Aas soon aswe know something works, it is outdated...,@ especiallyin this era of large stallion books where what >works= isfound more quickly than before. As noted industryconsultant John Sparkman immediately questioned atthe completion of Bill=s talk, ADoes that mean Coolmoreshould stop breeding Danehill mares to Galileo?@ While Bill obviously knew that question was coming, the Galileo/Danehill cross is worth understanding onthree levels: 1) The cross itself is a very successful one.For Galileo, in terms of SW to foals percentage, it isone of his best; 2) When Galileo is bred to all otherbroodmare sires, by percentage of SW to runners thereare none better than Danehill mares; and 3) ThoseDanehill mares that have been bred to Galileo have not,as a collective group, done better with any other sire orsire line. The point is, it is not only important tomeasure simply the success of the cross (i.e. thenumber of times that it has been tried). That isone-dimensional, and to a certain extent Bill is right, itdoesn=t mean much. But it is just as important tomeasure the alternatives for the sire and broodmare sireto give the cross context, which is what TrueNicksdoes.

Timeform ratings are developed on the basis of notonly the performance of the horse, but the previous andsubsequent performance of the horses that ran on theday and the previous performances of past horses.Context of opportunity is vitally important. Bill=s column does raise one issue that data cancreate, and it fits somewhat into his statement thatsuccess is not repeated at the same rate, I also think Ican presume that he would agree with what I am aboutto say. Successful nicks/crosses lead breeders tobelieve that there is some type of magic at work thatcan overcome anything. Having worked as a buyer andseller of horses, as a stallion manager and breeder, as apedigree analyst and now one that is using genomictools to optimize selection, I am thoroughly convincedthat it is much more important to really know your mare(or stallion), what he/she looks like, and who he/sherepresents in their pedigree. There is a nuance here thatis lost on many breeders each year as they select thestallions for their mares. Data does not represent fact.Just because the mare is by Danehill doesn=t mean thatshe inherited any of his genetic goodies. She got about50% of his genes, but he may have given her none ofthe good versions of them. She could well be a Danehillmare in name only, a genetic null, and sending her toGalileo could be a complete waste of time. Genomics isgoing to start to sort this out.Cont. p13

Finally, Bill opines that the stakes system is not theoptimal way of measuring success and promotinggenetic improvement in the breed. I am in 100%agreement with him on this. It is a system that serves apurpose to classify performance, but as a breedingindustry there are a lot better measures of performancethat we could develop and implement to breed betterand sounder racehorses. Using prize money, as theAPEX rating does, to delineate class is possibly an evenworse measure of performance than using black-typewinners. The horse that finishes 6th in a Grade 1 racereceives no prize money, and thus is not considered asuperior runner based on that performance, but thehorse winning a weak slots-fuelled state-bred maidenrace receives almost enough to be considered an AARunner.@ The latter would most likely be beaten afurlong if the two ever met. Using prize money as aclass discriminator presumes that prize money isrationally distributed and reflective of class and we allknow that is not the case. Either way, as a collectiveworldwide group, breeders are doing a great andavoidable disservice to themselves. A private study completed by a prominentowner/breeder this year pointed to mares that wonlisted races as being the worst group of mares to try tobreed a stakes performer from. You have to overpay forthem in the sales ring for what they are, and theyusually disappoint as producers. There are a numberreasons for listed winners being a bad bet in thebreeding shed, trainer effect being the largest reason, but suffice to say, as an industry, rather than relying onblack type status as a measure of merit, or AARunners@, we would be better served developing abreeding value that had known heritability, allowingbreeders to make informed purchase and selectiondecisions. Today, breeders select their breeding stock (stallionsand race mares), on the belief that what they areselecting for is heritable, but they really have no idea ifit is or not. We buy mares because they won a stakesrace, ran a 100 Beyer or a 4 on the sheets, but wehave no information to tell us if a mare that ran a 4 onthe sheets is more or less likely to produce a foal that iscapable of running a 4 on the sheets. Fast mares areseemingly always popular to buy and fast stallionspopular to breed to, but does it really matter if beingAfast@ itself is not heritable? On speed figures, FormalGold would beat A.P. Indy, which should tell youenough about the foolishness of using handicappingfigures for breeding selection. Most breeders are in this game to firstly breed a goodracehorse, breed a good horse more consistently, andby proxy improve the breed. Taking Bill=s statement onblack type one step further, and knowing the limitationsof using prize money as an arbiter of class, it wouldactually help us all if we had an accurate measure ofnot only what performance is, but what genetic meritand breed improvement meant in the first place.Byron RogersPerformance Genetics LLC

AI got her in January and February, butshe didn=t thrive in the spring and didn=t do very well,@her trainer said. AMy remit was that she was to beturned into an Oaks filly, so I thought I had to give hera run and, although she ran okay at Newbury, shedidn=t sparkle. I said to the owner that we should let hercome to herself and sure enough by July time she wasgiving me the right signs. At Leopardstown, she missedthe break and was always on the back foot, but madeup a lot of ground. The one concern we had was thatthe ground would be too fast for her today, but Kierensaid she moved beautifully and she is a very promisingfilly who stays in training next year. She is still only ashell and can only improve, so the G2 Middleton S. atYork in the spring could be a starting point.@ Video, courtesy Racing UK.
