10 KLD Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant at Kalpetta, Wayanad, Kerala
Vermifiltration based breakthrough faecal waste management solution
1. INTRODUCTION
Kalpetta is a town and a municipality in the Wayanad district, state of Kerala, India.
Kalpetta is the headquarters of Wayanad district as well as the headquarters of Vyatiri
taluk. It is a bustling town surrounded by dense coffee and tea plantations and
mountains. It lies on the Kozhikode-Mysore National Highway NH 766 (Formarly NH 212)
at an altitude of about 780 m above sea level. Kalpetta is 72 km from Kozhikode and
140 km from Mysore.
Apart from the administrative capital of the district, Kalpetta is also the centre of tourism
activities in Wayanad due to its central location within the district and its proximity to
most visited tourist sites.
As of 2011 India census Kalpetta had a population of 31,580. Males constitute 49% of the
population and females 51%. In Kalpetta, 11% of the population is under the age of 6.
2. NEED OF PROJECT
Fecal sludge management (FSM) is the collection, transport, and treatment of fecal
sludge from pit latrines, septic tanks or other onsite sanitation systems. Fecal sludge is a
mixture of human excreta, water and solid wastes (e.g. toilet paper or other anal
cleansing materials, menstrual hygiene materials) that are disposed in pits, tanks or
vaults of onsite sanitation systems. Fecal sludge that is removed from septic tanks is
called septage. FSM is necessary in densely populated areas where a proportion of
population is not connected to a sewerage network, and the covering and rebuilding pit
latrines is not possible.
3. PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
In August 2018 Kerala received worst flood after July 1924. Several NGO, GO’s and
Private sector assist Kerala Government for Flood rescue and rehabilitation majors. One
of the agencies UNICEF is actively engaged in rehabilitation measures. As part of their
programme UNICEF selected PriMove Infrastructure Development Consultants Pvt. Ltd.

Purchase Order No. 81066913 Dt. 20th Dec 2018
Inclusions in contract
1. Supply and Installation of Sludge Treatment Unit- Design Construction, Supply,
Installation Testing & Commissioning of 10 KLD Capacity Faecal Sludge Treatment
Plant based on Tiger Bio Filter Technology.
2. Annual Maintenance of Sludge Treatment Unit- One year Operation and
Maintenance of Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant.
4. FSTP AT KALPETTA
Capacity:
Kalpetta have a population of 31580 souls (as per 2011 census) and 14000
Households. Based on this data UNICEF proposed to construct a Fecal Sludge
Treatment Plant of 10 KLD (Kilo Litres per Day) capacity. Also Kalpetta Municipality
wants to serve this FSTP for Wayanad District also after expansion of the plant later.
Site Location:
The location of the FSTP at Kalpetta Municipality holds a land for Solid waste
management at 5 km from Kalpetta along Puzhamudy- vellaram kunnu road.
5. TIGER BIO FILTER TECHNOLOGY
The plant is based on “Tiger Bio Filter” Technology with capacity to treat 10 Kilo litres of
Faecal Sludge per day (10KLD/Day). This technology is comprised of 4 processes-
anaerobic digestion, Vermi filtration-I, Vermi Filtration-II and polishing. The Earthworm
based vermifiltration rapidly treats waste matter, with no smell and need for desludging
(a common phenomenon in traditional and informal faecal waste treatment). Vermi
filtration is reportedly a superior form of sanitation technology, compared to
conventional methods such as septic tanks and pit latrines. Earthworms are known to
promote digestion of organic waste, which results in the production of vermicompost. In
vermifilters, this behaviour is combined with filtration to digest organic matter present in
septage. The worms need only air, water and organic matter to form a sustainable
population in the vermifilter.

Screen Chamber and solid liquid separation tank This tank is used to remove large size floating matters,
plastic etc from faecal sludge. Also this allows gravity to
act and separate the inert grit from faecal sludge.
Anaerobic Digester Anaerobic digestion is a collection of processes by which micro-organisms breakdown the biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen. These tanks are used to reduce organic load from Faecal Sludge. This tank contains specially formulated bacterial culture which consumes organics from faecal sludge. This is a three stage process.
Tiger Bio Filter - I (Sludge water separation and treatment tank) The thickened sludge is then spread on beds comprising earth worms, bacterial culture that provides a favourable habitat and respiration zone for earthworm growth and reproduction. This tank is used to separate residual solids and liquid stream coming from anaerobic digesters. The offensive odours are completely removed in this stage. The trapped solids are consumed by earthworms and converted to Vermicompost thus reducing the organic load. The liquid stream leaves the tank from bottom and stored into the tank.
Tiger Bio Filter - II (Wastewater Treatment) This is setup consisting staggered media and earth worms in a module. The effluent from stage 2 enters the module from top and leaves from bottom leaving behind the dissolved impurities in media. The trapped solids are consumed by earthworms and converted to Vermicompost.
Tertiary Treatment (Pressure Sand Filter Activated Carbon Filter and Disinfection) This is a polishing unit, provided to remove any colour or odour remaining from secondary treatment. The disinfection by Chlorination is provided to make treated effluent safe for human handling and disposal.
