Word of the Day

occupantGrab a Hold Word of the Day:The addition of -ant to a French or Latin-derived verb stem often gives you the name of an agent, as it does here: an occupant is one who occupies. The dead ancestor here is Latin occupare, "seize, take hold of, appropriate," which in an interesting figurative way still describes what happens with things that you occupy, and things that occupy you — though the latter, even if they're human, are not usually called occupants.
