Thoughts from Caroline-Artemis…

Dear Friends and Readers,

The last month of the year and for many this month sees the enjoyment or stress or a bit of both in the lead up to the Christian festival of Christmas.

Throughout the world today, we are seeing many different nationalities joining in various festivals and some tourists make it their reason to travel, like to Korean Boryeong Mud Festival or Hindu Diwali Festival of Lights or the Holi Festival of Colours festival in India. Many of these festivals have deeply religious meanings and many believers are only too happy to invite and enlighten an outsider to the special ceremony or rituals of the festival.

Indeed, with many nations preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on 25th December, we can also see many nations which are not classified as ‘Christian’ also joining in the festivities with various levels of celebration, like the putting up of a Christmas tree.

Most festivals, from whichever nation or religion, bring people together for a special moment, a celebration or a commemoration; they enjoy traditions and the customary festive food which goes with such events. Often it is a time for reflection, to reconnect and to be thankful. The joy of giving is also a strong element of such festivals, whether it be giving gifts, offering hospitality, welcoming newcomers to a community, there is great pleasure in the act of ‘giving’.

These days, it is therefore sad to see that this big Christian festival is, in some countries, overshadowed by such huge commercial gains which leave many people not knowing or forgetting the true value or message of the festival.

Wherever you will be on 25th December, I hope you will be at peace, happy and either giving or receiving, bringing joy to all.

Wishing all our readers a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2015.

With my very best regards,

Caroline-Artemis Laspas & the TOURISM AROUND THE WORLD Monthly team!

PUEBLA THE COLOURFUL CITY OF MEXICO! by Dimitri Laspas

Mexico’s 4th largest city and one of its oldest is ‘Puebla de los Angeles’, which was founded in 1531. It lies just 100km south-east of Mexico City in the Valley of Cuetlaxcoapan, at the foot of one of the country’s highest volcanoes, Popocatepetl, which is still active and often gives some dramatic displays of ash clouds! With a wonderfully preserved and rich history and culture, Puebla is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Puebla has some of Mexico's best preserved colonial architecture, which when combined with the local’s warm hospitality, its relaxed atmosphere, and colourful surroundings, it is no wonder it is an up and coming Latin American tourist destination.

The covered market, Puebla

During the 16th century, the city became very important and earned several noble titles; in 1532 it was given the title of a ‘city’ and in 1538 the ‘Coat of Arms’, both given by King Charles V. In 1558, it became the ‘Noble and Loyal City of Los Angeles’ and in 1576, it was given even higher status as the ‘Very Noble and Very Loyal City of Los Angeles’. There is much to see in the city including the many wonderful religious buildings like the 16th–17th century cathedral and old archbishop's palace, as well as the university dating back to 1587; the Colegio del Espíritu Santo. Indeed, the Palafox Library was established in 1646 and was the 1st library in the Americas. With decorative tiled walls on many buildings, known as azulejos the combination of European and Baroque

styles comes through across the historical centre of the city. Filled with pretty squares with cafes and arts and crafts shops, the large historic centre is a delight and the main square or the zocalo is the perfect place to start exploring the city. It’s the place where people gather and where rallies, protests, concerts and holiday celebrations take place. Puebla is seeing increased tourism as a result of its stunning mixture of architecture, culture and hospitality with many new hotels opening to meet the rising demand.

The Dome, at the Cathedral of Puebla,

Its geographical setting has meant that it has been a strategic location both commercially and culturally over the centuries with a distinctive trade route between Port of Veracruz and Mexico City.

The city offers many options for visitors like the Africam Safari Zoological Park located just outside the town and with a bus tour on offer for those without a car to drive around. Africam was the 1

st zoo

in Latin America accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, for its dedicated conservation and high quality of animal care. The park protects many endangered species of animals as well as indigenous flora and fauna.

Popocatepetl volcano, Puebla

Visitors should also experience a ‘Latin/Spanish’ bullfight (from November to March) at the Plaza de Toros El Relicario.

Puebla is famous for its ‘talavera’ pottery and this can be found in the Antiqua Plazuela de San Roque, built in 1801 and was the city’s 1

st traditional market.

Today is offers over 100 stalls, offering products from all over the region.

It is therefore no wonder that Puebla is the host city for the 20th MITM Americas and the 6th CULTOUR Fair taking place this month. The city will showcase its best to international and regional hosted buyers and media. Tourism Around the World Monthly will be present and look forward to telling you all about it in a future edition! ●

The Acropol is and the Parthenon, Athens, Greece

'PROMAKHOS': NEW FILM FOR THE REUNIFICATION OF THE PARTHENON MARBLES ‘Promakhos’ is a drama about

2 Athenian attorneys who pursue litigation for the return of the Parthenon Marbles. The name of the film is inspired by the bronze statue of Athena Promakhos that used to stand guard in front of the Parthenon; linking the lawyers’ courage in standing up for what they love. The release of the film coincidentally happened close to the arrival of The movie, was filmed with the support of the Greek Culture Ministry, the ‘Alliance for Greece’, the Acropolis Museum, the Greek-British Chamber, the Greek-German Chamber, the Greek-Spanish Chamber and the Greek-Italian Chamber, as well as cooperating with the groups ’Return, Restore, Restart’, ‘Bring them Back’, ‘Marbles Reunited’ and ‘International Association for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures’. FRANCE TO FOCUS MORE ON TOURISM France is one of

the world’s top tourist destination bringing 84.7 million foreign tourists in 2013. Tourism is a priority for its economy, at over 7% of GDP. The country’s latest target is to reach 100 million tourists by 2020. France ranks globally 3rd for tourism-related revenue, totalling over UK33, EU€42 billion a year. Building on this is a top priority. With greater competition from neighbouring nations and new destinations, France needs to adapt in order to benefit from the predicted increases in tourists over the next 20 years from 980 million to 1.8 billion international tourists a year in 2030. Tourism involves all Regions, Departments and Municipalities. It is a real opportunity for all territories. Tourists spend locally and their presence increases consumption in shops and visits to cultural sites. With most tourists coming from Europe, there are increasing numbers arriving from the Americas; nearly 3 million, 2 million from the African continent and 1.5 million Chinese. 80% of the French vacation in their homeland - France.

2015 MARKETING FROM UK OFFICE OF GERMAN NATIONAL

TOURIST OFFICE Sustainable Travel, German Reunification

and Customs and Traditions are some of the new PR and marketing campaigns to take place during 2015 from the German National Tourist Office UK and Ireland (GNTO) for 2015. ‘Scenic Routes’ with 80 different themes, from food to football, castles to clocks and industrial heritage to history, among others, will also be a focus for 2015, along with arts and culture. A spiritual travel campaign in 2015 will culminate in the 500th anniversary of the birth of Martin Luther, in 2017; as part of ‘Customs and Traditions’ there will be a focus on German food, time-honoured arts and crafts and traditional ceremonies. Germany’s Royal Heritage Route and accessible travel/multi-media campaign ‘Discover Germany BarrierFree’ remain

priorities also for 2015 and beyond. Klaus Lohmann, director, GNTO UK and Ireland commented: ‘next year provides the perfect opportunity for anyone to discover Germany. As a holiday destination, it offers huge choice - from the coastal regions in the north, lakes and mountains in the south to the beautiful towns, cities and natural landscapes in between. It’s the year to discover the eastern regions, full of history, perhaps less well-known than some of the more famous regions but hugely welcoming and surprising. In a year that reflects on so much history, it’s time to discover something new and our campaigns for 2015 provides a perfect starting point to do that”.

GLOBAL WILDLIFE POPULATIONS DOWN SINCE 1970 A

new report by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) confirms that the world populations of fish, birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles fell by 52% from 1970-2010, a lot more quickly than expected. The lions have reduced by 90% in West African and the tigers in India are 2-3% of what it was 100 years ago. The report gives a shocking indication at the state of the planet.

The declines are mainly due to human activity as well as our demand on natural resources making places unsustainable. It is thanks to many conversation projects that the situation is not worse and many projects, have seen great results like in Nepal where the tiger population increased by 60% from 2009-2013. We need to make better choices about how we live and consume things. We must consume more wisely and better manage our natural resources which will result in the reduction of the loss of habitats and species. Global tourism can play a huge role is passing this vital message to all concerned.

BRITISH POLICE TO PATROL STREETS OF IBIZA, SPAIN

British policemen could be patrolling the streets of ‘party’ Ibiza next summer to help control British tourists. Already the island has German, Italian and French police on its streets to help keep the streets safe and deal with tourists in their own language and in terms they can understand from a cultural point of view. The scheme has been a huge success so far and helped reduce crime by 18%, with petty crime down 46%.

The Cathedral of Er fur t , Christmas Market , Germany

RUSSIAN TRAVEL MARKET The outbound Russian tourism

market has seen great growth in recent years, but with a devaluated rouble, travel has become a more expensive luxury in 2014, by about 20%. However Russian citizens remain keen to travel. Forecasts for 2015 growth are good, but at a slightly slower rate than in previous years. From Jan-Aug foreign trips by Russians fell by 1%. The decline is mainly due to a reduction of 50% in travel to Ukraine; Russia’s 2nd most popular Russian destination in 2013. Taking out Ukraine, Russia foreign travel market has grown by 10% from Jan-Aug 2014. Turkey was the top tourist destination; with Greece, the UK, Thailand and the USA all seeing greater arrivals. However Russian arrivals to Spain and Germany declined. With its yearly double-digit growth, Russia is one of Europe’s top foreign travel markets. In 2013 beach holidays were top holidays at 55%, with 15% taking city breaks and 10% went on round trips. Russian tourists spent more money and stayed longer at their destinations. Although tourists find the internet important, it represented 50% of bookings while 40% still booked through a travel agent.

THE ’REITERLESMARKT’ OF ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER At Christmas time, there are many wonderful

Christmas markets to visit across Germany and one of the most famous is in the medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Southern Germany. A top tourist destination all the year round,

with its walkable town wall, towers and gates, half-timbered houses, narrow alleyways, cobblestone streets, churches, museums and parks. Each winter, the picturesque old town transforms itself into a winter wonderland and since the 15th century, a wonderful Christmas Market. There are many cultural events held alongside the market, like brass band concerts and guided tours through the town. The highlight of the market, is the appearance of the ‘Rothenburger Reiterle” (Rothenburg horseman), who also gave the market its name and who opens the market each year. The origin of the ‘Reiterle’ comes from ancestors who believed that they were messengers from another world, who floated in wintertime through the skies with the souls of the dead. But the image of this mythical character has changed over the centuries and rather than one to fear, today it is a friendly messenger.

TANZANIA JOINS EAST AFRICA VISA SCHEME In order to

boost regional tourism, Tanzania is to join other African nations; Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda in a single-entry tourist visa scheme. On another matter, Tanzania has joined forces with Kenya on the war against poaching within the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem to contain the killing of elephants by poachers. The scheme has been very successful with the number of elephants within the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem increasing from 3,000 in 2006 to 7,000 this year.

ENVIRONMENTAL

DISASTER LOOMS

OVER THE

SCENIC COAST OF

SALENTO By Mario Masciullo

A debate has begun in Italy over the case Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), a project created to supply gas energy in the country. The TAP pipeline stretches from Azerbaijan all the way to Europe via Albania and Greece, and is threatening

to destroy one of the most beautiful coasts of Salento.

TAP’s website has pointed out the so-called benefits that the pipeline will bring to the countries that it intends to serve. "The pipeline is environmentally friendly and compatible with the area and that will have no impact on tourism of Salento,” TAP’s website states. "On the Italian coast hundreds of locations welcome millions of tourists every year. Only a few, however, have earned the Blue Flag which recognises the quality of the sea and their services”. However, this specification does not take into account that Salento has been the leader of the Blue Flag for several years and the pipeline will run through protected areas. From Azerbajian, the pipeline avoids the beautiful coasts of Greece by using its mountains (1,990m above sea level) to get to Albania, where it will then be built on the seabed (leaning to 111kms) of the Strait of Otranto, which is a sea that is particularly vulnerable due to rough waters and significant risks, as some experts have warned. The pipeline should then land on one of the 5 Melendugno’ beaches named Caciulara St. Basil, San Foca district, which has received the Blue Flag award 4 times, and the 5 sails by Legambiente (the Italian Association of the Environment), and about a mile away from the nature reserve of international importance, The Gesine.

The steel tube reinforced by concrete is then buried 18ft deep under the dunes, with its pit covered by concrete and mortar. Re-emerging in the woods, (which will be virtually razed to the ground by 2 hectares) will unfold over land through the vineyards of Negro-amaro Northern Salento Doc Wine (destroying a large part of it) to get to enter the central SNAM (general gas station) of Mesa. But not before uprooting century-old olive trees. In a region that is rich with having 4% of oil production at the regional level.

This is an area that is highly dependent on tourism where young people rely on tourism for their daily sustenance. The pipeline will put their future in tourism in jeopardy by destroying the region’s natural resources. These include a number of sites of common interest and the archaeological site of extraordinary beauty, Roca Vecchia, known as the ‘Mycenae of Salento’. Along 500m of beach, which are regularly reported by the national travel magazines to be among the most beautiful beaches in Puglia, Punta Cassano Tourist residence. In the dunes, spawn the now rare sea turtles, Caretta caretta. The project will involve the destruction of these beautiful beaches,

undermining years of hard work to raise the level of Salento first tourist destination in Italy. These problems were highlighted in a report presented last year in November by the Ministry of the Environment, which consulted 25 experts (including architects, engineers, geologists, chemists, doctors and lawyers) called to share their expertise by Melendugno’s mayor, Marco Poti, and coordinated by the professor of the Polytechnic of Bari, Engineer Guido Borri.

At present, the Ministry of Environment approved the Environmental Impact Assessment report filed by TAP, which included 58 requirements. Promptly rejected by the Ministry of Culture at the Fiera del Levante (Bari) headed by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and attended by 40 mayors from Salento. Melendugno Mayor Poti praised the president of the Nichi Vendola Region by reiterating that ‘Puglia is not the trash of others’.

In response, Environment Minister Galletti, who recently approved the Environmental Impact Assessment report, has said that the project is a definite go, prompting an immediate opposition from Ministry of Culture. Prime Minister Renzi, however, said that there is space for talks on the final decision. The gas pipeline project has been met favourably despite the strong opposition highlighted in the studies and opinions of many experts.

Italian and international tourism expert journalists and tour operators met by Mayor Poti and Alfredo Fasiello of Lido San Basilio on the spot have commented and already posted on their Facebook profiles, "This is heaven, it would be a real sin destroy it." At Melendugno, then, in the estate of Masseria del Capitano, where the pre-historic Dolmen Placa and Gurgulante are found, will be built the central airlock, with 10m high chimneys to dispose of the smoke. Around it, the 12 hectares of wilderness will not be permitted for any activity.

The Council of the municipalities involved have also declared in resolutions passed on October 14, 2013 it to be an unsuitable place to house the central depressurisation station because it is located very close to the towns of Melendugno, Vernole and Calimera and it is located in a non-industrialised zone, hosting farms and olive groves that characterise the typical landscape of Salento.

Furthermore, the project does not mention the system of water supply required to operate the plant. From here the fear of the greatest risk of draining the already delicate balance of ground water table of Salento.

This work will be cast off in the next 50 years, experts have warned. The TAP company intends to considers it ‘disposable work.’ The underground gas pipeline will be left to slowly corrode, which, as Carmen Mancarella, editor of ‘Beaches’ the journal of tourism and culture of Salento, put it “A gift for future generations for whom their parents are working at great sacrifice, hoping to deliver them a better land.” ●

Hever Castle, England… Like a Postcard by Caroline-Artemis Laspas

Castles, wherever they are always hold a certain magic and mystery and their history is as much about the castle as it is about those who lived in them. This is no exception when it comes to one of England’s most wonderful castles (of which, I have to say, there are many!).

Hever Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in England; a real classical picture postcard setting. Located in Kent, surrounded by glorious countryside, Hever Castle is most famous for being the home of King Henry VIII’s 2nd wife, Queen Anne Boleyn.

The castle location has a rich and long history. The building on the original site of the castle was a farmhouse. After the Norman Conquest by Frenchman, William the Conqueror the land was given to Walter de Hevere (d’evere), a Norman noble. He converted the farmhouse into a Manor House and fortified it with a stone quadrangular moat in about 1270. When complete it consisted of a huge gatehouse and a walled bailey, accessed by a wooden drawbridge.

The Boleyn family lived there in the 15th and 16th centuries and added a Tudor building within the walls and the Long Gallery among other features. The Boleyns were one of England’s most powerful families and one of the children, Anne became Queen of England, but only for 1,000 days! She was the mother of Queen Elizabeth I.

Anne was one of King Henry VIII’s mistresses, but she wanted to be his wife. He truly loved her he agreed to marry her and also renounced the catholic religion and created the Church of England.

That was not the end of Hever Castle as a royal residence; it was later the home to Anne of Cleves, the 4th wife of King Henry VIII. From 1557 ownership changed between 13 different families and the castle eventually fell into decline until in 1903, William Waldorf Astor invested time, money and imagination in

restoring the Castle. He also built the ’Tudor Village’, now called the ‘Astor Wing’ and added the stunning gardens and lake. His detail and restoration used materials and methods used by Tudor and Elizabethan craftsmen.

A visit to Hever Castle gives a glimpse into the past and a royal one at that! With lavish rooms full of huge paintings and historic furniture.

The Gardens are of a formal layout with a huge variety of interesting features including the famous yew maze (open April - October weather permitting), the Italian Garden, sculptures and many water features. There is a wonderful ‘Anne Boleyn's Walk’, lined by trees planted over 100 years ago.

The gardens are filled with flowers, bushes and trees and there is even a unique ‘Hever Rose’, which produces lots of deep-red blooms fading to cerise, offset by golden-yellow stamens. Throughout the year the gardens offer a spectacular display of plants and roses.

In the Astor Wing of the castle, luxury bed and breakfast is on offer with 19, stunning 5* graded en-suite bedrooms, some with 4-poster beds, some with roll-top baths or walk in showers! Each room is decorated differently with unique furniture and castle views. All reservations include complimentary access to the castle and grounds. A castle stay would not be complete without a full English breakfast or a healthy ‘Continental’ buffet.

Hever Castle is also a top venue for events of many kinds and offers two unique venues; The Astor Wing and The Guthrie Pavilion. The Astor Wing offers an impressive Tudor style meeting space, with state of the art audio visual facilities, suitable for up to 60 delegates. The Guthrie Pavilion, located in the Italian Garden, is a contemporary space and can accommodate up to 200 delegates. In addition there is a championship golf course, an activities field for outdoor pursuits, an outdoor heated swimming pool and a tennis court.

Hever Castle is easily accessible from London. It is a traditionally English setting with a royal history and perfect for a day trip, a big event or a luxury weekend away. What more could you ask for! ●
