Media Task Two Part OneIn what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media?When conducting my research I learnt new features within magazine and what effect it had on the audience. Typical features of a Magazine:The Masthead;The title is usually very big and placed predominately at the top of the magazine. Along with being its title it is used as a template and logo because the title always remains in the same place this magazine as it is they believe that is the best way to attract readers. By making the masthead largest on the cover signifies the magazines importance ensuring you knows it and recognises it.

Main Image;The main image is usually a celebrity to add celebrity endorsement as the reader will be enticed by such a well-known artists. Famous people attract their fans, so if the celebrity music star is better known then it will appeal to wider audience. The central image s acts as a key signifier, it introduces us to the main artist the magazine is covering.

Incentives;Free posters are used to attract the customer into buying the magazine for the free poster. This is a commonly used technique as it is very effective and attracts customer very easily.

Information;The magazines information such as; price, website address and bar code, along with the date is displayed in the bottom right hand corner of the page in a place where it is obvious and easy to read.

Cover Lines;They show what content is in the magazine. There big to lure the reader into the magazine enticing and encouraging them to read. The biggest cover line acts as the most exclusive content in the magazine and they want to express this content the most.

In my magazine I used most of these typical features and a few more. I thought by adding other features would help attract my audience and catch their eyes.

In my magazine the features I included were;

Front CoverMasthead;My masthead is predominately placed at the top of my magazine on two lines; the title Bring the Beat Back was created to link in with my genre of festival fun. It is the largest piece of text on my magazine as I want it to be recognisable and relate to the audience. This was effective because it was bold, it stood out and its one of the main features to attract my audience, first impressions are key and if I cant get the font right then my magazine wont be consistent and link together throughout.

Main Image;My main image is of my model Alex; I wanted my front cover picture to be naturalistic so there for I choose a forest as the backdrop to the photo-shoot. This helped to link in with my lighting as I wanted my lighting to be naturalistic and no high key or low key lighting as it wouldnt create the effect that I was trying to obtain. My main image challenged usual conventions, my main artist is not looking predominately at the camera, this would have been effective to create relationship between the reader and writer, and however my image adds a sense of mystery. By doing this encourages the reader, they want to know what hes looking at and where his eye are wondering.

Puff;I included an opacity puff in which it states 200+ FESTIVALS INSIDE this was to encourage my audience, it acts as an incentive to lure the reader in and appeal to them. Its a short snippet of text to gain attention from the reader, which is exactly the purpose of mine. This is a typical convention, I by using some typical features allow my audience to feel secure to what they know/are used to.

Information;All my information was included, for example my date and issue is placed just below my masthead and my barcode and price is predominately in the bottom right hand corner of the magazine.

Cover Lines;All my cover lines link go my contents page and double page spread, it is consistent with the magazine and compares to the house style. My cover lines show the reader what they should expect to see feature within my magazine and acts as my exclusive information within my magazine. My cover lines are effective, they grab the audiences attention and lure them in, wanting to carry on reading.

Comparison;My magazines features serve the same purpose to that of Q or NME. The conventions that exist within Q and NME are the same that exist within my magazine. All magazines share the same purpose to sell and attract/ appeal to their target audience; these are the objectives that I need to exceed in order to be successful.

Conclusion;In conclusion without all the knowledge of the key conventions and key terminology my magazine wouldnt have been able to contain the vital elements that make up a magazine. Therefore it would have failed horrifically and probably wouldnt have even looked like a magazine at all. I think my media magazine has developed and challenged forms and conventions of real media products by research into together magazines and trying to use similar techniques to interest and attract my target audience.

Contents page: My contents page sticks to a usual magazine convention to standard magazines. The layout was the key convention that tells the audience what can be viewed inside and gives snippets of information about what the articles may include.

Double page spread: My double page spread conveys the same conventions as the standard magazines. This is because I stick to a similar layout that people of familiar with and included text that is relevant to the image.

In my double page spread I included a pull quote similar to other magazines, the purpose is to encourage the reader and lure them in, making them want to read the article not just take a glimpse at the image. By using this feature helps me persuade my audience, so that they can consider reading and not feel pressured. The pull quote is in a opacity box to fit with the my colour scheme and make it stand out from the image. I did this to make it more appealing and enticing for the reader. I also included a stand first within my double page spread. This gives a clear out look of the article and makes it easier for the reader to understand. By increasing font size and the boldness of the quote to make my double page spread look more professional. The stand first is a background for the article, explaining what they expect to be reading about.
