BANDS / ARTISTS I WOULD USE FOR

MY FRONT COVER

One reason why I would choose this band to go on the front cover is because they are a very

famous rock band. They have a very wide target audience and have gained many fans throughout

the years. The magazine I want to create will have a target audience of 15 – 30 year olds. The

majority of Pierce the veil fans are of that age range and so would help broaden my audience

reach and help gain buyers for my magazine. Additionally their fans are both female and male.

This means that by using them on the front cover I will be able to reach out to both genders aged

between 15-25. On top of this, they are a rock band – meaning

there is more than one member. Most rock artists are in a band.

Therefore by using them on the front cover it will help me

represent the genre of rock and portray this to the niche market.

Because they are such a famous rock group, it will help brand my

magazine if they are on the front cover. This is because they

endorse the target audience into reading the magazine, and in return

the magazine provides more popularity and recognition from a

larger target audience. Therefore by using the band Pierce the veil

on the front of my magazine, they will work in synergy to brand

each other and thus get more recognition from the target audience/

niche market.

Bring Me The Horizon is another famous rock band., with a

very large target audience. Since the band was first formed in

2004, they have gained a very large fan base of both males

and females. This is good because it will expand my target

audience to both genders and of the target audience age

range (15-30). They are commonly used on the cover of rock

magazines such as ‘Kerrang’, and by using them on my

magazine it will show the readers that I ‘have contact’ with

many famous bands that are yet to be introduced to them.

Additionally they are modern rock that a lot of younger

people (my target range 15-30) are into. Therefore if they like

the bands music they are more likely to want to read/buy my

magazine.

Rise against is a rock band who generally don’t get the

recognition they deserve for producing good rock music.

Therefore I would use them on my magazine in order to

provide them with more recognition and help introduce

the target audience to bands that they have never heard of

before (therefore my magazine and the band would work

in synergy to get more recognition). It would be good to

use them on my magazine as it would make the target

audience think that my magazine will help introduce them

to more music from different bands that they wouldn’t

normally listen to or haven't heard of before. The band

consists of white males, aged around 30 and are from a

white ethnic group. They target males aged around 20-30,

which is within the target age group of whomb I wish to

target.

A day to remember are another rock band that I could

use on the front cover of my magazine. This is because

they also have a very large and vast audience of the

same target age range of my magazine. I think the band

would help represent the audience because they would

help portray that my magazine is of the rock genre and

so would show that the target audience (rock lovers)

should read the magazine. Additionally they always have

gigs and concerts going on and my magazine and their

band could work in synergy to advertise tickets and sell

them to whoever wants to go and see them live.

Sleeping with sirens are an additional band that I could use for my

front cover. As well as all the other bands I have mentioned, they

also have a very large target audience and fan base. Therefore by

using them on the front cover of my magazine it would help reach

out to their target audience and other people who like rock. Not

only do they have a male target audience due to the style of their

music, they also have lots of female fans. This is because they have

released good acoustic songs which has got them well known the

women who listen to rock radio stations such as Kerrang where they

are frequently played. Therefore it would be good to use them on

the front of my magazine because not only would my magazine be

targeting the right audience (males aged 15-30), it would also be

targeting all the female fans of their bans as well. This will help me

have a wider audience reach as I will be able to target more people

who may like their music or rock music in general.

Green Day are a very famous rock band. It

consist of three members which is

unconventional as most bands consist of 4

members plus. They frequently appear on

magazines such as AP, Kerrang, Q and NME.

They are used often because of such a wide fan

base they have obtained through making rock

music. Therefore they would provide popularity

for my magazine and help sell it to the readers.

CLOTHES MY ARTISTS WOULD

WEAR

These are examples of some of the clothes my artists would

wear. Generally they wear a plain t-shirt or a printed t shirt.

Furthermore snapbacks are a common item used, aswell as

hoodies and dark coloured skinny jeans. Leather jackets are

also common amongst rock singers, aswell as printed or

plain baseball t-shirts as shown in the bottom right corner.

Oli Sykes has his own clothing brand and so it is common to see him wearing his

own designs. On many magazine issues he appears on the cover page in his own

‘drop dead’ company, and in the magazine they advertise his products to the target

audience to sell the products.

Kellin Quinn from sleeping with sirens also has his own clothing company

called Anthem made. It is also common to see him in his own clothing

designs on magazines and in photos.

MAKEUP MY ARTISTS WOULD

WEAR

GREENDAY

Green day are a band that wears make up. As you can see from the images their general make

up is eye liner around the eye. They do this because it helps connote the genre of the rock. It

does this because many rock singers are associated with heavy makeup and tattoos. As males

stereotypically don’t wear make up, it makes them stand out from other bands – even more

so than they already do as they are a band of three which is not very common. The use of

eye liner under the eye helps create a rustic look. This helps to denote the unusual rock style

they have.

Other bands such as the black veil brides opt for a more heavy make up look. They use lots

of dark makeup around the eyes, pale foundation, and other various bits of makeup to give

them a unique look. This heavy make up is used in order to help demonstrate that they are

a heavy metal band as it connotes the drastic sound of their songs and lyrics. Furthermore

they use lots of makeup to enhance they're heavy metal as everything they do and wear is

exaggerated and extreme such as the heavy makeup, lots of tattoos, extreme hair and black

clothing with silver studs and chains.

Bands such as sleeping with sirens, bring me the horizon, lower than atlantis and pierce the

veil all go for a more natural look. They aren't that into makeup and prefer a more messy

look which is rustic and helps fit into the rock genre. However in saying this they all have a

particular hair style which tends to be long with a swept fringe. This is a common hairstyle

for rock singers as it creates more of an effect when ‘head banging’ on stage.

As you can see from

the rock charts, some

of the bands I have

mentioned are in the

top 40.

MIS EN SCENE

This is one of the places i could set my mis en scene. I think this is a good idea because it helps

represent the artists in my magazine and the genre that they are showing. The image shows a

stage with an amp, microphone, lights and wires. This helps represent the rock genre because it

helps show what kind of setting rock artists would be in at a show or concert/gig. This mis en

scene would also remind the reader of their favourite or first gig/concert and would make them

want to read the magazine and see what tickets are available.

Another setting could be at a skate park. This is because a lot of rock singers have BMX bikes

and ride a skate boards as shown by the

images. Furthermore the graffiti

background helps represent the more

rebellious side of rock. It also kind of

represents rock because the graffiti

reminds the audience of tattoos which

many rock singers have. The use of

graffiti also helps connote the rustic side

of rock making it seem drastic and

distressed like some of the lyrics of

their songs.

The graffiti background helps represent the more rebellious side of rock. It also kind of

represents rock because the graffiti reminds the audience of tattoos which many rock

singers have. This photo also looks rustic and helps represent the dark side of rock music

and some of the depressed feelings they show in some of their songs.

This particular image doesn't necessarily have a location. However this is good because

most music magazines don't necessarily use background in the image. They do this in order

to make the main person in the image stand out and so the background doesn’t distract the

audience from the main feature. I thin using this kind of background will be better than

using plain white as it connotes a grunge kind of effect that can be linked to rock music.

HISTORY OF ROCK MUSIC

1950s – it was in this decade that rock music emerged. Rock and roll in its earliest days could be described as blues with an

electric guitar. Rock ability however emerged in the 1950s. This was a mixture of rock and roll country, blues, and jazz. The

major artists of rock in the 1950s were Elvis Presley, bill Haley, buddy holly and little Richard.

1960s – during this decade, other parts of the world was introduced to rock music. The most popular rock band in this era

was the Beatles. They were influenced by Elvis Presley and they used his music to create something new – thus a new age of

music was born. After this, new rock bands emerged such as Pink Floyd, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Yard birds, the

Grateful dead, and Jimmy Hendrix.

1970s – bands such as led zeppelin who were popular in the 1960s became even more popular in the 1970s. He did this by

creating a blend of hard rock and blues. Other bands such as David bowie, the eagles and Queen started in the 1970s.

However the founding fathers of punk rock were the Ramones. They combined anarchism and teenage rage with rock and roll.

This rock music made in the 1970s influenced many other rock bands in the future.

1980s – many bands such as Guns and Roses, Van Halen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, and Motley Crue can best be

remembered for their unique style. They all were heavy metal bands with tight leather trousers, insane hair, soaring guitar solos

and power ballads in their music. In the 1980s, indie/alternative rock began to emerge examples of these bands are the smiths,

the cure and sonic youth.

1990s – the early 90s was the era of grunge and alternative rock. The most popular band of the 1990s was Nirvana. People

described this kind of music as dark and expressed teenage angst. Popular grunge and alternative bands are Pearl Jam, Nirvana,

Alice in Chains, and Jane's Addiction.

2000 – so many of the genres from above exist in this day and age. You still see teenagers today with the Beatles and nirvana t

shirts on. Alternative rock is one of the most popular genres of music that exists today. Emo, a sub genre of rock is also very

popular. It has deep and intensely emotional lyrics. It can also be described as heavy metal. Heavy metal has many sub genres

such as black metal, death metal, thrash metal which are very loud, aggressive, and fast. Examples of heavy metal include some

of the example i have used in my PowerPoint: pierce the veil, slipknot, bring me the horizon and cannibal corpse are a few

examples. In this day and age, alternative rock is also very popular. Such bands include the red hot chilli peppers, Coldplay, and

the foo fighters. Pop is also a popular genre. Such bands include Adele, Florence and the machine and kesha.
