Remote, rugged and wild, Ruaha National Park is built for adventure. Sitting in a transitional zone between the savannas of northern Tanzania and the woodlands common in Zambia, it’s uniquely covered with thick vegetation in some areas and open grasslands in others, interlaced with sandy intermittent streams flowing off the Great Ruaha River.

Roughly ten percent of the world’s lions live here. Lions in Ruaha are generally much larger than those in northern Tanzania and many Ruaha prides have as many as 20 members. Cheetahs frequent the grasslands while leopards lie in the more wooded areas, as do smaller predators like spotted hyenas and black-backed jackals. It’s the only park to see both greater and lesser kudu together.

CONSERVATION & CULTURAL INITIATIVES | RUAHA CARNIVORE PROJECT

Carnivore Research projectRuaha National Park, Tanzania

A predator’s Eden, Ruaha is home to large populations of lions, cheetah, spotted hyenas, leopards and African wild dogs that thrive on the abundant wildlife on the plains and the livestock raised outside the protected area by local pastoralists. Predator attacks result in villagers killing lions and other apex predators to understandably protect their livelihood and families. As with almost every other species, recent population declines have been dramatic. It is estimated that only six large lion populations remain in Africa and that Ruaha supports the second largest lion population on the continent.

The Ruaha Carnivore Project was developed to address

the needs of both the local human and predator populations to reverse these trends. When Ruaha Carnivore Project initially met with community leaders to listen to what they needed, they realized lions could be more valuable to people alive than dead. Ruaha Carnivore Project worked to reduce attacks on villagers’ livestock by reinforcing bomas (livestock enclosures) and placing guard dogs to alert herders when predators approach. They addressed the villages need for better healthcare, education and veterinary care for livestock.

Each night of your stay at Jabali Ridge supports the Ruaha Carnivore Research Project with a per person financial contribution.

DAYS 7-9 MAJI MOTO RESEARCH CAMP | USANGU WETLANDS

DAYS 7-9

Maji Moto Research Camp Usangu Wetlands

Move into even wilder spaces and unexplored places—the vast Usangu Wetlands which follow the Great Ruaha River to the south and west.

Maji Moto Research Camp is a tourism research and exploration camp designed to further knowledge of this largely unexplored region of Ruaha National Park and to keep it pristine for future generations. Join researchers and guides and explore sections of the

wetlands. Boat through waterways. Hike over higher ground and traverse narrow tracks by four-wheel drive. Receive naming rights for the segment of the wetlands you explore. Naming an undiscovered marsh, or those granite boulders or that delta tributary leaves something behind for generations to come.
