Dear Century Scholars, This handbook provides information about your Century Scholarship as well as your role within the Century Scholars community. A goal of the Century Scholars Program is to provide the support and resources of Texas A&M University to scholarship students whose high achievements demonstrate readiness to take greater responsibility for their own education. Your designation as a Century Scholar also carries the added distinction of being an Ambassador to the community. The role of an Ambassador provides the opportunity to promote these ideals to students at your former high school so that they will use Texas A&M University as their conduit to a future of educational opportunities. Texas A&M University, through Scholarships & Financial Aid, is investing a substantial amount of time and financial support in your education. Your cooperation in carrying out the responsibilities as outlined in this handbook will be one way that your appreciation for this interest and investment can be shown. The Century Scholars Program is dedicated to developing outstanding students into leaders on campus and in their communities through: Academic excellence, Service to Texas A&M University and to your high school, Leadership development, and Professional Growth As a participant in the Century Scholars Program, we hope that you find the information in this handbook useful. It not only outlines your responsibilities to the Century Scholars Program throughout your time at Texas A&M University, but also the commitment that the Century Scholars Program coordinators, Scholarships & Financial Aid, and university have to the success of each Century Scholar. The Century Scholars Program is proudly sponsored by The Association of Former Students. Please join me in thanking them for their generous support. Thanks and Gig ‘em! Delisa Falks Executive Director Scholarships & Financial Aid

The Century Scholars Program (CSP) is a partnership between Texas A&M University and 90 high schools throughout the state of Texas. Established during the 1999-2000 academic year, the Century Scholars Program is an academic scholarship and retention program seeking to increase the number of enrolled and retained students from under-represented Texas high schools. The program serves as a four-year learning community in which its students are developed holistically and prepared for the rigors of the academic and professional arenas. The Century Scholars Program was first implemented in the Office of Admissions. In 2001 the program was moved under the jurisdiction of Honors Programs & Academic Scholarships. This move allowed the program to grow from a recruitment tool into a scholarship and retention program, focusing on the academic and personal success of its students. During the summer of 2010, the Century Scholars Program was repositioned within Scholarships & Financial Aid, where it resides today. This restructure has opened the program up to additional academic and support resources, including a dedicated student development team. The program was originally established in 1999 with select high schools in the Houston area. It has expanded over the years to further encompass high schools throughout Houston, Dallas/Ft Worth, San Antonio, Central Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley. Review of current and prospective Century Scholars high schools occurs every few years in coordination with Scholarships & Financial Aid and the Office of Admissions & Records.

Howdy Ags! As I begin my fifth year working with the Century Scholars Program, I marvel at how far you all have come since you first set foot on campus as prospective students. I am blessed to have the opportunity to work with all of you and see you transform into thriving college students. As always I will leave you a challenge for the coming year: Take the opportunities and good will that you have received as a Century Scholar and help Pay it Forward to someone else, whether it be a younger Century Scholar or a prospective Century Scholar. I look forward to working with all of you this academic year. Remember that my door is always open. Thanks and Gig ‘em!

Howdy! This is the start of my third year with the Century Scholars Program and I am thrilled to now serve as the coordinator for such a special program at Texas A&M University. It is through working with individuals such as yourselves that I get to say, “I love my job!” while bragging about the amazing things you all do each day at Texas A&M, within the Brazos Valley Community, and across the globe. Our challenge to you is this: make the most of these four years through getting involved outside of the classroom, working hard in the classroom, and taking the time to build a group of friends to get you through the ups and downs of life. I look forward to 2012-2013 with you all; it’s going to be incredible. Gig ‘em!

Century Scholars are expected to participate in Century Scholars Programming. Partial or non-participation in the Century Scholars Program (CSP) will result in progressive consequences. The CSP coordinators regularly monitor Century Scholars’ participation.

Monthly Advisor

Meetings

All freshmen and sophomore Century Scholars are required to meet with a scholarship advisor on a monthly basis.

Juniors and seniors that are on probation or suspension are required to meet with a scholarship advisor on a monthly basis during their probation or suspension period. This includes probation or suspension due to poor academic performance, failure to be enrolled full-time, and partial or non-participation in the Century Scholars Program.

Century Scholars that are required to meet with an advisor may miss no more than one (1) monthly advisor meeting per semester. More than one missed monthly advisor meeting in a semester will result in a semester of probation for the first infraction and a semester of suspension for any additional missed meetings.

Juniors and seniors that are not on probation or suspension are not required to meet with an advisor on a monthly basis. However, these Scholars are still welcome to schedule appointments with advisors as needed.

Monthly Seminar

Century Scholars may miss no more than one (1) CSP monthly seminar per semester. More than one missed CSP monthly seminar in a semester will result in a semester of probation for the first missed seminar and a semester of suspension for any additional missed seminar.

Freshman Course

Freshmen Century Scholars are required to enroll in and complete the Century Scholars UGST-181 course during their fall semester. Enrollment of freshmen into the spring course is optional and will be at the discretion of the CSP coordinators.

Ambassador Visits

Ambassador visits are mandatory for sophomores and juniors. Failure to complete the ambassador visit requirement will result in the automatic suspension of the scholarship payment for the following semester. An appeals process is not offered for scholarship suspension due to a missed ambassador visit. Students should visit with a Century Scholars coordinator should travel be a concern in completing the ambassador visit, as alternate opportunities may be available on a limited basis.

Additional Programming

All additional programming elements , including community service hours, mentorships, and recaps are required. Students are expected to submit all their required documents by the posted deadline. Please refer to the specific requirements for each class year, as requirements may vary.

Recognition Ceremonies

Attendance at the Freshmen Recognition Ceremony and the Senior Recognition Ceremony is required for all Century Scholars. These ceremonies are not considered to be monthly meetings. Students are expected to be in attendance at both ceremonies.

Page 9: TAMU_Century Scholar Program

Probation & Suspension

Periods

Participation in Century Scholars programming is still required of students on probation or suspension who wish to earn back their scholarships. Lack of participation in a probationary period will result in suspension the following semester. Lack of participation in a suspension period will result in continued suspension of the scholarship.

Century Scholars Program Removal

Should a Century Scholar choose to be removed from the Century Scholars Program, the student will need to submit a Century Scholars Non Participation form to the Century Scholars coordinators. Voluntary removal from the Century Scholars relinquishes all the student’s rights and privileges as a Century Scholar Ambassador and Century Scholars participant, including any remaining scholarship payments.

Neo Email Accounts

The Century Scholars Program uses email as its primary means of communication with students. Texas A&M University recognizes TAMU Neo email accounts as an official means of correspondence per Student Rule 61. Century Scholars are expected to regularly monitor their TAMU Neo email account (@neo.tamu.edu) and should not forward their TAMU Neo email to an alternate email address.

Responding to Contact

Century Scholars will receive a variety of communications, including email and letters, from the Century Scholars coordinators throughout their time in the program. These communications will relate to important administrative matters. Century Scholars are expected to respond to these communications promptly and by the stated response deadline.

Changes of Address or

Phone Number

Century Scholars are responsible for updating any changes of address or telephone number through the Howdy portal. Because the Century Scholars Program will use the primary contact information (permanent address and primary phone number) listed in Howdy for each student, it is imperative that students provide up-to-date contact information.

Appeals Process

As with appeals for grades and hours, the Century Scholars Program allows for an appeals process for lack of participation. Should you choose to appeal your suspension, you will be expected to submit the appeal in writing by the deadline specified in your suspension letter. Late appeals will not be considered. Students may not appeal a suspension due to a missed ambassador visit.

ENROLLMENTTo continue receiving scholarship payments, Century Scholars must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours per full semester at Texas A&M University. If co-enrolled with another institution, students must have 12 credit hours per full semester at Texas A&M University. Students must register for 12 or more hours for their Century Scholars Award to appear on their billing statement. First-year grade exclusions will be considered in reviewing hours. If, by excluding a grade/course, a student is enrolled in and completes less than 12 hours in a prior semester, this will count as a semester in which the student “fell below” the minimum 12 hour requirement to continue receiving the scholarship. The first occurrence is results in a semester of probation; the second is suspension of the scholarship effective the following semester.

GRADESThe Century Scholars Program requires that students maintain a cumulative grade point ratio (GPR) of 2.75 and not be on conduct probation with Texas A&M University. If, by excluding a grade/course, a student’s cumulative GPR in the current semester rises to the minimum 2.75 required for Century Scholars, the student can request reinstatement through 5pm of the 12th class day of a semester. No retroactive payments will be paid for previous semesters.

Century Scholars should consult their Academic Scholarship Handbook for information pertaining to the following:

• $1000 study abroad stipend

• Deferment of payment due to internships and/or co-ops

• Summer scholarship payment requests

• Request for scholarship reinstatement

• Request for post-TAMU graduation scholarship

• Incomplete and “X” grades

PERSONAL GOALSAt the beginning of each academic year, students are asked to establish short and long-term academic, career, and personal goals. They will identify the steps they should take to accomplish their goals, potential obstacles, and available campus resources to help them to achieve these goals. Students will also identify how they will utilize their top five (5) strengths to achieve their goals.

ANNUAL RECAPAt the end of each academic year, students are asked to reflect upon the short and long-term goals that they set for themselves at the beginning of the year. The annual recap will allow students to track their progress towards their goals, celebrate accomplishments, target academic and extracurricular activities that may need improvement, and provide feedback regarding the Century Scholars Program. (Freshmen are also required to provide a recap at the end of the fall semester.)

AMBASSADOR VISIT PROPOSALSophomores are required to have their fall semester Ambassador Visit set-up and confirmed by October 4th. This includes confirming the date and time with the high school as well as notifying the Regional Prospective Student Center (PSC). The Ambassador Visit Proposal form will assist students in the planning of the visit, help identify potential obstacles of the visit and how to overcome them, and allow students to identify how to utilize their personal strengths to make the visit successful. The Century Scholars Program coordinators may follow-up with the high school and PSC contacts.

AMBASSADOR VISIT RECAPAs a courtesy to high school staff, students are expected to confirm your visit with the high school at least two (2) weeks in advance. Students are also expected to notify the Regional Prospective Student Center (PSC) about the Ambassador Visit in advance of the visit. The Century Scholars Program coordinators may follow-up with the high school contact. Students should visit with a Century Scholars Program coordinator prior to your ambassador visit to receive an ambassador packet that contains essential information and supplies for the visit. Students must follow-up with the high school contact within a week after the visit to thank them for the opportunity to meet with their students. Additionally, students are asked to follow-up with the PSC contact, if applicable, to thank them for their assistance.

FACULTY MENTORStudents are expected to select a faculty mentor from within their field of study (i.e. college or department). This mentor will serve as a resource, provide guidance, and potentially serve as a reference in the future. This person may provide information pertaining to research opportunities, internships, and co-ops. Students will need to meet with their faculty mentor at least once a semester (fall and spring). Each semester’s meeting will have a specific objective. Students shoud be sure to check into undergraduate research opportunities either with the mentor and/or another faculty member in their field. Students should network through their mentor to obtain internships or co-ops, as well as discuss possible classes that the professor will be teaching in the future in which the student may wish to enroll.

Page 16: TAMU_Century Scholar Program

16 17

FORMER STUDENT MENTORStudents are expected to select a Former Student mentor from within their field of study (i.e. college or department). This mentor must be a graduate of Texas A&M University (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate). The mentor will serve as a resource, provide guidance, and potentially serve as a reference for the student in the future. This person can provide information pertaining to research opportunities, internships, and co-ops. Students will need to meet with their former student mentor at least once a semester (fall and spring). Each semester’s meeting will have a specific objective. Should a student need assistance in selecting a Former Student Mentor, please see Leslie Uptain or Erin Fisk. The Century Scholars Program maintains a contact list of Former Students who have agreed to serve as mentors for Century Scholars.

COMMUNITY SERVICEThe Century Scholars Program operates on a “Pay it Forward” platform. Century Scholars should recognize that the community service requirement allows students the opportunity to give back to the Bryan/College Station community. Therefore, community service hours must be completed within the Bryan/College Station community and must adhere to the following guidelines:

• Be offered through Texas A&M University’s AggieServe website, located at http://aggieserve.tamu.edu

*OR*

• Be offered through the Volunteer Brazos Valley website, located at http://volunteerbrazosvalley.org

Exceptions to this requirement must be pre-approved by a Century Scholars Program coordinator (Leslie Uptain or Erin Fisk).

CSP RECAP & POST-PROGRAM PLANSSeniors who are exiting the Century Scholars Program are asked to provide an overall recap of the program and share their future plans, either academic or professional. The Century Scholars Program coordinators try to keep former Century Scholars abreast of current happenings and opportunities within the program.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EVENTSeniors are required to attend a career-related program or a graduate school workshop during the fall semester. Examples of such programs include Career Center workshops, career fairs, follow-up meetings with Former Student Mentors, and professional development seminars. Seniors are encouraged to consult with their academic department/college or the Texas A&M Career Center for upcoming programs. The Career Center’s website is careercenter.tamu.edu.

The Century Scholars Program began incorporating StrengthsQuest™ into its programming during the fall of 2011. StrengthsQuest™ helps students learn how to leverage their natural talents to succeed in the classroom and the professional arena.

Freshmen Century Scholars will complete the StrengthsQuest™ inventory during the summer prior to their enrollment at Texas A&M. They undergo the initial StrengthsQuest™ training during the Century Scholars Program orientation.

“StrengthsQuest can help you thrive in your academic career by showing you how you can leverage your talents to approach your coursework through a focus on what you naturally do well. By using your strengths in your studies,

you can take greater control over your academic future.”

Students in the Century Scholars Program (CSP) will have the opportunity to join the Century Scholars Organization (CSO), a recognized student organization comprised of current and former Century Scholars currently enrolled at Texas A&M University. Membership in CSO is not a requirement of the Century Scholars Program. The purpose of the Century Scholars Organization is to develop students in the Century Scholars Program holistically, sharpen their ambassador skills, and provide leadership development. It will provide Century Scholars with a social environment in which to network with each other. Additionally, CSO will support and assist the Century Scholars Program by helping Century Scholars meet the programmatic requirements of their scholarships. CSO is dedicated to developing outstanding students into leaders on campus and in the communities through: Service to Texas A&M University, Service to Century Scholars high schools, Fostering a sense of community, Leadership development, and Professional growth Current and former Century Scholars enrolled at Texas A&M University will have the opportunity to become a member of CSO through the completion of a statement of intent, payment of dues, and verification of Century Scholars status. Executive Committee members are selected to one-year terms (May-April) by an application and interview process. The call for applications takes place during the spring semester. Interviews are conducted in early April. Selected Executive Committee members are announced at the annual Senior Recognition Ceremony. Applications for Freshmen Class Chair are made available during the summer, with interviews taking place during Gig ‘em Week and the formal announcement occurring at the Freshmen Recognition Ceremony.
