Standards Development Process

• College and career readiness standards developed in summer 2009

• Based on the college and career readiness standards, K-12 learning progressions developed

• Multiple rounds of feedback from states, teachers, researchers, higher education, and the general public

• Final Common Core State Standards released on June 2, 2010

The Common Core State Standards in Reading/Language Arts & Mathematics were

adopted by the Florida State Board of Education on July 27, 2010.

The Standards aim to align instruction with the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) framework

Percentages do not imply that high school English teachers must teach 70% informational text; determinations are

built on the foundation that a great deal of reading must occur in all disciplines.

•Place each NGSSS Reading Standards with the Common Core you feel it most parallels.

Increasing Complexity Across Grade Levels

Sixth grade: Describe how a particular story’s plot unfolds in a series of episodes as well as how the characters respond to or change as the plot moves toward a resolution.

Ninth/Tenth: Analyze how complex characters (those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.

Eleventh/Twelfth: Analyze the impact of the author’s choices regarding how to develop and relate

elements of a story or drama (e.g., where a story is set, how the action is ordered, how the characters are introduced and developed).
