B&W AWARDEDC$20M CONTRACT
FOR ELK FALLSBabcock & Wilcox CanadaLtd has been awarded a con-tract valued in excess ofC$20 million as part ofNorske Skog Canada Ltd’sNo 2 Recovery Boiler mod-ernization project at its ElkFalls Division in CampbellRiver, British Columbia.
The original recovery boil-er was supplied by B&WCanada in the mid-1960s, andhas been the workhorse of thepulp mill ever since.NorskeCanada has embarkedon a modernization project toupgrade the steam and recov-ery plant to meet the demandsof an ever-increasing competi-tive marketplace.
The project includes engi-neering, procurement, manu-facturing, transportation, dem-olition and construction. B&WCanada will provide a newmembrane furnace, primaryand secondary superheatersand auxiliary equipment. Theboiler start-up is scheduled forMarch 2004.

TAKEDATO BUILD
API PLANT Foster Wheeler, in associa-tion with Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries CoLtd, has won an engineering,procurement and construc-tion contract for a new activepharmaceutical ingredients(API) plant currently beingbuilt in Dublin, Ireland, forJapan’s Takeda ChemicalIndustries Ltd.
The new plant will pro-duce the active ingredients fordrugs to be used in clinical tri-als, as well as ACTOS, thebrand name for pioglitazonehydrochloride, which is usedto treat diabetes and is current-ly being processed by Takedaat its Irish pharmaceutical fin-ishing plant in Bray, CoWicklow.
The �80 million contractwill involve the design andconstruction of a new facilityon a 20-acre greenfield site.Construction has already start-ed with mechanical comple-tion expected next year.

DOW TO CLOSEPET PLANT IN
PISTICCI, ITALY The Dow Chemical Co ispermanently shutting downits Polyethylene Tereph-thalate (PET) plant inPisticci, Matera, Italy, by theend of the first quarter 2003.
The company says currentunfavourable market condi-tions and the global economicenvironment have forced it toconcentrate on facilities thatoffer optimum efficiencies andworld-scale capabilities.
The Pisticci plant has acapacity to produce 60 000MT of PET per annum, com-pared with an average capacityof more than 150 000 MT atnewer plants.
SHAW TO CONSTRUCT
SINGLE-TRAINPMDI FACILITY
Shaw Constructors Inc hasbeen awarded a contract bythe Dow Chemical Co for theconstruction of a PolymericMethylene Diisocyanate(PMDI) facility in Freeport,Texas.
When completed, the plantwill be the largest single-train
capacity PMDI facility in theworld. Shaw’s scope includeserection of structural steel, set-ting of major mechanicalequipment and the installationof process piping to be sup-plied by Shaw. The projectstarted in January, and has ananticipated completion date ofFebruary 2004.

FW WINS LINEARALKYL BENZENE
CONTRACTIN QATAR
Foster Wheeler Energy Ltd,UK has secured a contractfrom Qatar Petroleum forfront-end engineering designand project managementconsultancy for a new linearalkyl benzene (LAB) plant inQatar.
The new plant will havethe capacity to produceapproximately 88 000 tons peryear (tpy) of n-paraffin and110 000 tpy of LAB. It will bebuilt within the QatarPetroleum Refinery batterylimits to benefit from using theexisting utilities such as elec-tric power and cooling water,to reduce the project’s capitalcosts.
The US$240 million fast-track project is scheduled to becommissioned during thefourth quarter of 2005.
LNG TRAINPLANNED FOR
OMAN The Oman Government hasawarded Chiyoda-FosterWheeler and Co LLC a con-tract for the detailed engi-neering, procurement andconstruction (EPC) of a liq-uefied natural gas (LNG)train at Qalhat, near Sur,Oman.
The contract includes con-struction of additional LNGstorage facilities as an option.
The new LNG train will bebuilt next to the existing OmanLNG Complex at Qalhat,where two identical LNGtrains, each with a capacity of3.3 million tons per year, havebeen operating since early2000. It is expected to be onstream by the end of 2005.

TECHNIP-COFLEXIP TO
UPGRADEGERMAN PLANTS
RWE Systems AG hasawarded Technip-Coflexip alumpsum turnkey contract,valued at about ��41 million,to increase efficiency in twoexisting natural gas-firedcogeneration plants inBochum and Dortmund,Germany.
Technip-Coflexip’s scopeof work covers design,mechanical and electricalequipment supply, dismantlingof existing parts, erection ofnew parts and commissioningof the upgraded plants.
The project, to be handledby Technip-Coflexip’s engi-neering centre in Dusseldorf,will be carried out simultane-ously at both locations, withthe two plants running practi-cally non-stop. Completion isscheduled for March 2004.

SAMSUNG BOOKSMORE ORDERS
Samsung Heavy Industrieshas received orders for eightships worth US$580 million.
The orders include anLNG carrier for Qatar’s RasLaffan LNG Co Ltd (RasGas),five container vessels forCanada’s Seaspan ContainerLines Ltd and two product car-riers for Italy’s EuroceanicaCTGM SA.
