Mozart Requiem at Koerner Hall Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir Directed by Ivars Taurins Toronto, Canada, February 4, 2013 … Tafelmusik presents Mozart’s timeless masterpiece, Requiem, in the wonderful acoustics of Koerner Hall February 21 to 24, 2013. Ivars Taurins conducts the Orchestra and Chamber Choir, and they are joined by four remarkable vocal soloists: Nathalie Paulin (soprano), Laura Pudwell (mezzo- soprano), Lawrence Wiliford (tenor) and Nathaniel Watson (baritone). These performances of Mozart’s Requiem are supported by Al and Jane Forest. Two Mozart motets bookend the first half of the programme, which includes music composed by the Bach family that influenced Mozart: a funeral aria by Johann Christoph Bach, a motet by CPE Bach, as well as three J.S. Bach keyboard fugues transcribed by Mozart for strings. Mozart’s famous Ave verum corpus closes the first half. The Requiem was Mozart’s final composition and remained unfinished at the time of his death in December 1791 at the age of 36. The vocal parts and the figured bass were partially completed as far as the Hostias, but only the first movement was fully orchestrated; other movements had nothing more than sketches of the orchestra parts. Desperate to receive the commission fee, Mozart’s wife Constanze was determined to have the score completed and asked various people to undertake the task. One of Mozart's students, Franz Xavier Süssmayr, completed the Requiem in February 1792. For its February performances, Tafelmusik has chosen to use a recent edition by the musicologist H.C. Robbins Landon, which incorporates passages by Mozart’s pupils Franz Jakob Freystädtler and Joseph Eybler, as well as the Süssmayr portions. Despite its fragmentary origins, the Requiem is profoundly moving and remains one of Mozart’s most beloved and enduring works. On Friday, February 8 as part of Tafelscene, a free membership programme for concert-goers ages 35 & under, Tafelmusik presents a special screening of the Director’s Cut of the 1984 Academy Award-winning movie AMADEUS. Directed by Ivars Taurins

Toronto, Canada, February 4, 2013 … Tafelmusik presents Mozart’s timeless masterpiece, Requiem, in the

wonderful acoustics of Koerner Hall February 21 to 24, 2013. Ivars Taurins conducts the Orchestra and Chamber

Choir, and they are joined by four remarkable vocal soloists: Nathalie Paulin (soprano), Laura Pudwell (mezzo-

soprano), Lawrence Wiliford (tenor) and Nathaniel Watson (baritone). These performances of Mozart’s Requiem

are supported by Al and Jane Forest.

Two Mozart motets bookend the first half of the programme, which includes music composed by the Bach family

that influenced Mozart: a funeral aria by Johann Christoph Bach, a motet by CPE Bach, as well as three J.S. Bach

keyboard fugues transcribed by Mozart for strings. Mozart’s famous Ave verum corpus closes the first half.

The Requiem was Mozart’s final composition and remained unfinished at the time of his death in December 1791

at the age of 36. The vocal parts and the figured bass were partially completed as far as the Hostias, but only the

first movement was fully orchestrated; other movements had nothing more than sketches of the orchestra parts.

Desperate to receive the commission fee, Mozart’s wife Constanze was determined to have the score completed

and asked various people to undertake the task. One of Mozart's students, Franz Xavier Süssmayr, completed

the Requiem in February 1792.

For its February performances, Tafelmusik has chosen to use a recent edition by the musicologist H.C. Robbins

Landon, which incorporates passages by Mozart’s pupils Franz Jakob Freystädtler and Joseph Eybler, as well as the

Süssmayr portions. Despite its fragmentary origins, the Requiem is profoundly moving and remains one of

Mozart’s most beloved and enduring works.

On Friday, February 8 as part of Tafelscene, a free membership programme for concert-goers ages 35 & under,

Tafelmusik presents a special screening of the Director’s Cut of the 1984 Academy Award-winning movie

AMADEUS. Membership information and other details are available at Tafelscene.
