The Midwest Youth Conference originally began as the “Tri-State Youth Conference”

in the year 1979.

It was on the campus of Southwestern Christian College in the Fall of 1979 that the

Conference concept was given birth by Brother W.C. Edwards who then served as

Ministering Evangelist of the Westside Church of Christ in Rockford, Illinois. Brother

Edwards along with Brothers Warren G. Blakney and David C. Penn conferred

together on how to formulate a regional three state Conference that would benefit

the young people of the Midwestern region of our brotherhood including Illinois,

Indiana and Wisconsin.

The National Youth Conference had become quite expensive to attend and many

youth who desired to fellowship with other Christian young people could not do so

because of the ever-increasing cost factors involved. In the words of Brother Penn,

“It was our sole objective not to compete with the National Youth Conference but to

offer a qualitative and comprehensive regional Conference within financial reason.”

The first regional and planning session for the Tri-State Youth Conference took

place in Bloomington, Illinois, where Brother Edwards was elected by those in

attendance to serve as Chairman with Brothers Blakney and Penn serving as Co-

Chairpersons with administrative skills.

After much prayer and planning had taken place by these three ministers of the

gospel, a Steering Committee was formed and the first ever Tri-State Youth

Conference took place in the Month of June 1980 in Rockford, Illinois. As the Tri-

State Youth Conference began to grow, the enthusiasm level reached far and

beyond original expectations. The Conference experienced such continuous

response that it was the decision of the committee to reach farther than just three

immediate states of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. In 1984 the Tri-State Youth

Conference became known as the “Midwest Youth Conference” including Kentucky

and Missouri.

Brother Blakney relocated to Portland, Oregon, and Brother Edwards relocated to St.

Louis, Missouri. The Steering Committee elected Brother Penn to serve as Chairman

of the Midwest Youth Conference and Brother Atwater, Ministering Evangelist of the

Tenth Street Church of Christ in North Chicago, Illinois, to serve as Co-Chairman in

the Winter of 1989.

Bro. Terry V. Atwater , Ministering Evangelist of the North Shore Church of Christ in

Waukegan, Illinois is currently serving as Chairman of the Midwest Youth

Conference including Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin.

II. To help guide youth in the direction of righteousness by providing them with mature

Christian leadership. (Hebrews 13:7)

III. To share in fellowship with other young Christians of like precious faith and to teach them

the importance of desiring the company of other Christian young people. (Romans 12:10;

John 1:7)

IV. To instill in youth a desire to have Christian principles and meaningful values.

(I Timothy 4:12; Titus 2:6-7)

V. To help equip youth today for a greater service tomorrow.

(I Corinthians 15:58; II Timothy 3:15)

VI. To educate youth on how to keep their lives cleansed from unrighteousness.

(Psalms 119:9)

VII. To help youth understand the difference between “wisdom” and “knowledge” as it is viewed

by the Scripture. (James 3:13-18)

VIII. To teach young members the importance of adding to their faith. (2 Peter 1:5-8)

Midwest Youth Conference Statement of Purpose

It is our sole objective as collective members of the Churches of Christ in the Midwest, to help equip and

encourage our young people in discovering the true meaning of Christianity, and to assist them as they

mature in the faith of Jesus Christ.

We, as ministers and church leaders, exhort them to grow faithfully in the Lord and in their personal

relationship with the Sovereign Savior.

Our attempt in this Conference gathering is to constantly foster wholesome spiritual avenues for Christian

inter-relatedness and edification; to help stimulate and motivate the intellect of young people whereby they

might become more involved in their various communities and congregations; and to extend Christian

influence when confronted with social, moral, ethical, and other contemporary issues of our complex society.

We, again, take this opportunity to thank the many counselors, youth leaders, and the hosting congregation

for the time they have invested in making this ministry a worthwhile and profitable endeavor.

In Christian Love,

Bro. Demetrius Gilbert Midwest Youth Conference Chairman

MYC 2017

UNSTOPPABLE: God’s Youth

Isaiah 54:17

God has given us the power to overcome obstacles. Whether it be the negative spirits of peer

pressure, gangs, drugs, academic challenges, social media challenges, fear of failure, etc., we

have the power to overcome any and all of these obstacles. Most importantly, He has given us

the power to obtain heavenly treasures as our names are written in heaven. Our focus during

this year’s conference will be to:

1. Identify spiritual roadblocks

2. Address the concerns our youth have in terms of finances, social media, academics, politics,

community empowerment, church involvement and career goals.

Each congregation will be given five (5) minutes.

From the theme, UNSTOPPABLE: Gods Youth, we challenge each congregation to find

a creative way to show how our youth can be empowered to face the challenges of

our world today and conquer those challenges through the power of God.

Remember to be Creative!!!!!!

Please remain within the allotted time limit for each congregation, 5 minutes, and please begin

working with your youth now to be sure that they are prepared to actively participate in the

Speeches and Skits portion of the 2017 Midwest Youth Conference.

For additional information, please contact Desi Anderson at (309) 202-8947 or

[email protected].

The Bible Bowl will cover chapters 1-20 from the book of Genesis. NOT THE

ENTIRE BOOK OF GENESIS. JUST CHAPTERS 1-20.

Questions will come from the New King James Version

There will be 3 rounds of play.

Each team shall consist of no more than 6 members.

Up to 3 members per team may participate in each round, and the remaining players

will be seated on the front row.

Teams may switch players after Round 1 or Round 2.

Electronic devices are not allowed. The use of them will result in immediate

disqualification of that team.

To Play

Each team will have a box of 30 questions and 3 answer cards located on a table in

front of their scorekeeper. The questions for each round will be labeled and in

order.

2 players will hold the answer cards and sit in their designated conference area.

1 player will stand behind their team's box waiting to select the appropriate

question when instructed to do so by the MC.

The MC will say the round # and question #. This is when you will select the

appropriate question and return to your teammates to confer for no more than 20

seconds.

When time is called, one team member will return to the answer table with your

team's answer card closed.

If you are not standing behind your box when time has been called, your team will

forfeit the question.

If you have your answer before time is called, stand behind your box and keep your

answer concealed until time to reveal it. You may not return to your conference

area once you come to the table.

The MC will read the question and answer choices to the audience.

When you hear the MC say "Answer," you will reveal your answer and hold it up until

your scorekeeper tells you it’s OK to close your card.

Once all answers have been recorded, the MC will tell you to select the next

question and continue play.

*** ALL AWARD Applicants must be registered with the conference and present

The “Zaccheus Award” is to bestow a non-competitive honor for spiritual growth. It is important to recognize our

young people for inward change, personal change and spiritual growth that others may see and recognize.

“Zaccheus” a publican with whom Jesus lodged during his stay in Jericho. He was the chief publican, and overseer,

among the tax-gatherers. Increasing his wealth by extortion, coercion, and blackmail from poor Jews. Zaccheus

was of little stature, and unable either to see over or to make his way through the press, and therefore scaled a

sycamore tree. There he was singled out by Jesus, who said to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for

to-day I must abide at thy house".

The change in Zaccheus is indicative of the New Birth. The desire to give half of his goods to the poor, and make a

fourfold restitution of all his evil ways is proof positive that one can change.

The purpose of this award is to recognize our young people for their positive efforts in change. So many times we

recognize young people for their talents and special abilities that we miss the young people who are trying to make

a positive change in their lives and to make a positive difference within themselves or peers. Awards will be

presented throughout the Conference.

Please submit two individuals from your congregation.

It’s time to represent and show your church spirit. We are requesting that each congregation prepare

supporters of the MYC for a number of years. As ministers, they were constant motivators of the young,

and assisting whenever and wherever possible not only by what they said but by what they did. We miss them

but more importantly we remember them. Therefore we award this Scholarship in the amount of $500.00 to
