About Advantech Box IPCsFanless Compact Embedded Computers, Ready for Versatile ApplicationsAdvantech Box IPCs are designed to give developers fast, convenient and simplified solutions for industrial and em-bedded applications. The embedded design, rugged features and powerful computing technology deliver reliability and flexibility. These computers are targeted to satisfy customers looking for a robust and compact computing platform with an industrial design and built-in I/O to handle diverse applications.

• Aluminum CasingDesigned with aluminum casing and fins, Advantech Box IPCs not only come with superior heat dissipation capability but also excellent corrosion resistance. This ensures the reli-ability in outdoor environments.

• Fanless DesignWithout rotating parts such as a CPU fan, system fan, power supply fan, the compact em-bedded Box IPCs are designed with extended MTBF and require very low maintenance.

• Limited Internal CablingFor general embedded computers, cables are used for wiring between connectors and CPU boards. These internal cables may increase the risk of system failure due to broken cables, loose contacts, or mistakes in assembly. But since connectors on Advantech Box IPCs are soldered directly on the PCB, the internal cabling inside every embedded com-puter chassis is strategically optimized.

• High Tolerance to Shock and VibrationDesigned with onboard CPU, memory, flash and strengthened connectors, Advantech Box IPCs endure up to 70G of shock and 7G of vibration under operation, and are MIL-STD-810F compliant. For even greater resistance, DRAM optionally can be glued into position for use in environments specially prone to shock and vibration.

• Superior Thermal DesignAdvantech’s Compact Embedded Computers are designed with heat pipes and aluminum thermal fins, supporting wide operating temperatures from -40 to 75° C. Advantech Box IPCs also come with low-voltage CPUs, industrial-grade components to meet mission criti-cal applications.

• Compact SizeUnlike the traditional IPC with sizeable chassis, Advantech Box IPCs are compact, slim and light-weight, saving space in working areas.

• Multiple Mounting OptionsTo meet the demands of various applications, the compact embedded Box IPCs come with multiple mounting options. From DIN-rail and VESA, to wall-mount and desktop, Ad-vantech Box IPCs make an easy, hassle-free fit into your system.

Application Story

ProjectAs a safe, comfortable, and convenient mode of transportation, the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) Skytrain has been transforming the Thai capital’s public transportation habits since December 1999. Both residents and visitors can now ride through central Bangkok, gliding above the traffic, noise, and aromas of the streets below. There are currently two routes that cover much of the central city, its many commercial, residential, and tourist areas, serving approximately 400,000 passengers a day. And expansion is planned for outlying areas. To enrich and to entertain passengers during their riding time, plasma/LCD/LED screens are implemented for airing commercials in trains, and at stations.

Requirements • Anti-vibration and shock resistant• Easy maintenance, with support for popular 16:9 widescreen LCDs• Plenty of processing ability for displaying, maintaining, and controlling digital multimedia content• A compact, fanless, temperature compliant system easily installed in small spaces• Built-in IEEE 80.11b/g wireless LAN with antenna• Extended operation with adequate processing power, low energy consumption, and efficient cooling• Indoor/outdoor usability with a wide temperature range of operation (-20~60°C) and resistance to dust• Excellent reliability and stability

ARK-3384Wireless Enabled, AC97 Audio, Three USB Fanless Embedded Computer

SystemWhether placed on platform trusses, side beams, above escalators and concourse booths, or in the cars themselves, Advantech’s ARK-84 serves as the controller for each display. Connected to the back of each LCD display via VGA or LVDS, all units share a server through a hub. The connection be-tween the ARK-84 and the hub is WLAN and each ARK-84 has built-in IEEE 80.11b/g wireless LAN with an antenna. The ARK-84 receives and updates broadcasting content from the server at the main station by WLAN.

ConclusionCombined with wireless LAN, a 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet, three USB .0 ports, two serial ports, digital LVDS and analog VGA/CRT display interfaces, the ARK-84 was extremely well suited to BTS requirements. The ARK-3384 is supplied with AC97 dual output 6W stereo audio in a rugged, compact chassis ideal for intensive multimedia and data communication based applications. Its fanless opera-tion creates no noise and all electronics are conveniently protected in a housing with no vent holes, perfect for applications in which space and environmental demands are critical.

Advantech’s software customization services helped fine tune the Windows XP based operating sys-tem according to BTS needs. Additionally, BIOS changes such as the I/O COM port mode setting can be made without opening the unit. The ARK-84 provides vivid displays, communication, and con-nectivity for the BTS Skytrain system, along with effective anti-vibration, thermal fins, and heat pipes for maximum reliability.

Application Story

ProjectCommercial freight charges are normally assessed by volume, or at least partly so, and thus it is important to quickly and accurately measure volumes of shipping lots.

A customer that serves freight companies wanted to improve their volume-scanning offerings.

This customer’s previous-generation scanning solution was already automated to some degree, but required placing each cargo pallet in a designated space on the floor, then retiring for a few seconds while a ceiling-mounted scanner took measurements and calculated volume.

The customer wanted to streamline the operation with forklift-mounted scanners that would require no special posi-tioning, no extra placement and pick-up. Pallets could then be scanned directly and automatically, in the regular course of loading or unloading.

Requirements • Fast• Accurate• Forklift mounted• Vibration resistant • Stable and reliable• No manual measurements• No extra placement and pick-up• Excellent wireless communications• Voltage-tolerant to operate from forklift electrical supply

Advantech worked together with the customer to assemble a system that could do the job. The elec-trical system in a forklift is variable, and at first the customer had specified a voltage range from 6 to 60 Vdc. This posed a problem when it turned out that accommodating such a wide range would require unexpected expense. When Advantech engineers inquired into the actual range of voltages encountered in daily forklift operations, they turned out to be considerably more stable than the cus-tomer had originally feared. As it turned out, the ARK-90, with its ability to accept voltages from 9 to 4 Vdc, was more than adequate, and offered off-the-shelf savings without requiring expensive modifications.

Another question was the wireless communications system. Originally the customer was leaning to-ward the use of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), similar to that used in mobile telephone systems. While true that HSDPA can provide excellent coverage over long distances, again the relative high cost was a concern. Ultimately, wireless LAN (WLAN) was chosen as the communications engine, and a WLAN card inserted into the ARK-90. One or more WLAN access points installed in the upper corners of warehouses allow huge interior spaces to be covered completely.

The rest was easy. A pair of USB cameras were linked to the ARK-90, and also a handheld optical scanner. When the forklift operator picks up a palette and scans in the waybill number, dual cameras mounted on the forklift run through a quick, accurate pallet scan. ARK-90 takes care of control and calculations, and transmits the palette data via Wi-Fi to the warehouse server.

ConclusionThe sealed, fanless ARK-3390 again came through with flying colors, offering stable, reliable, vehicle-mounted control and communications, as well as helping to reduce costs on two important fronts. The new system cuts unnecessary motion from the cargo handling workflow, making it easier and more efficient. The customer is delighted to be able to offer this competitive new solution to its clients, and help speed the world’s goods on their way.

Taiwan

ProjectDue to the continuous development and popularity of consumer electronics, such as LCD TVs, LCD monitors and notebook PCs, global demand for TFT-LCD (thin film transistor liquid crystal display panels) keeps increasing. A major TFT-LCD manufacturer in Taiwan with 7.5-generation (1950 x 2250 mm) LCD production needed to have a full range of new inspection systems.

Automated defect inspection is absolutely necessary to ensure the quality of large, mass-produced LCD panels. The manufacturer’s goal is to sell 100% “no failure” screens, therefore, a fast and highly accurate visual inspection of each finished assembly is essential. Before and after each step in the complete manufacturing process, an alignment is necessary to ensure the glass is positioned accurately. Advantech’s ARK-5280 fanless embedded computer, with two add-on PCI cards, was chosen as the key component for an Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) alignment system.

SystemThe glass defect inspection equipment is for 7.5G glass substrates, capable of inspecting LCD glass plates up to 1950 x 2250 mm. The equipment performs a variety of critical tasks: image grabbing and processing, defect location, statistical computation, as well as data analysis and review. Before and after the defect inspection processing is preceded, the alignment procedure is conducted to ensure the TFT-LCD to be inspected is precisely positioned on the system. This procedure is fundamental and critical, as incorrect position of the glass on the system may lead to serious inspection error. The AOI alignment systems are implemented at many stages through the manufacturing process.

Advantech’s ARK-5280 operates with two added PCI cards. The first is a 4-channel PCI-bus Image Grabber Card with BNC or Hirose interface, which is connected to a CCD camera. The CCD camera captures the image of the cross mark on the glass, and calculates the variance from the absolute X and Y coordinates. According to the variance, it further moves the glass to an ideal position through PLC. The second PCI card is a 4-channel isolated analog output card. With this card, this system features 4-channel LED light software control. The system connects to LED light through a standard LED connector interface. It could enable 5 – 50V wide-range LED light which illuminates the image to amplify features that need to be inspected.

Also, the ARK-5280 connects to an encryption key via printer port. This ensures the security of the API. The printer port further provides easy access for a wide range of image process libraries, as most image process libraries in the world are available through printer port dongles.

ConclusionAdvantech’s ARK-5280 is a powerful, robust, fanless, embedded box computer that is compact enough to fit in small spaces. Its high performance rate was an exact match for the Taiwan LCD maker’s requirements. The ARK-5280 supports Socket 478 processors up to 1.8 GHz such as the Intel® ultra low voltage Celeron® M or the low voltage Intel Pentium® M. Featuring two PCI slots for application expansion and system integration, the ARK-5280 also comes with four USB 2.0 and four standard serial port interfaces. It supports up to GB of DDR SDRAM and has dual independent display support from built-in CRT/VGA and DVI interfaces.

Offering great flexibility in space critical environments, the ARK-5280 is ideal for embedded system applications required by machine automation, industrial plants, and cabinet integration. Its rubber-ized anti-vibration card-holder for system cards, combined with an anti-vibration HDD-bay, ensure maximum reliability; plus, the ARK’s simple, modularized, user-friendly design is ready for quick instal-lation, as well as easy expansion and maintenance.

China

ProjectIn preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics as well as future energy demands, China built a wind turbine power plant to provide clean electricity for Beijing and the Olympic Games. Wind power is clean, plentiful, renewable, widely dis-tributed, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions when it takes the place of fossil-fuel-derived electricity. Wind power can be produced by large scale wind farms connected to electrical grids, as well as by individual turbines for providing electricity to isolated locations. At the end of 007, worldwide capacity of wind-powered generators was 94.1 giga-watts. Although wind power currently represents just over 1% of world-wide electricity use, between 2000 and 2007 wind power generation increased more than fivefold globally.

In 2007, the capacity of wind-powered generators in China was 6.1 gigawatts. Advantech’s ARK-3382 fanless, embed-ded computer operates the local monitoring system from within each wind power generating device, helping to provide power for Beijing city and the Olympic Games.

Requirements • Built to withstand fluctuating and harsh weather conditions, temperatures (-20~60° C), shocks, and vibrations• Multiple 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet ports • Compact, fully sealed, fanless design to protect against dust• High processing power (over 1GHz), low energy consumption• Accepts DC power source• Extended life, high MTBF• Connects to a 15” touch screen (DC power input) to show status of all devices• Designed with thermal fins and heat pipes for easy cooling• Embedded operating system for simple maintenance and increased reliability

Facility Management

SystemThe wind power generation monitoring system in China consists of two major parts – a central moni-toring and control system (CMCS) and a local monitoring and control system (LMCS). Each wind tur-bine has one LMCS. The local monitoring and control systems are connected to the CMCS through a LAN. Attached devices measure wind speed, power generator voltage, current, input/output, rate of rotation, plus the temperatures of bearings and the gear box.

With four LAN ports, the ARK-8 is capable of connecting to various turbine-related devices to col-lect data. Using a LAN connection, the cable can reach up to 100 meters. In contrast, if a COM con-nection is used, cable length must be much shorter and quality of transmissions is erratic.

Advantech’s ARK-8 works as the heart of the remote LMCS, controlling and checking turbine functions, in addition to collecting data from various devices. It feeds the system’s status back to the CMCS and records the exact times and conditions of any irregularities; a productivity report is processed at regular intervals.

ConclusionThe ARK-8 fanless compact embedded computer combines four LAN port interfaces and practical industrial functions into a rugged, compact metal chassis for network intensive based applications. Its fanless design increases MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure). That, matched with its features -- reliable, dust-proof, low maintenance, wide operating temperature range -- makes the ARK-8 extremely suitable for wind turbine applications, which include lack of on-site operators, and a high exposure to dust and broad temperature ranges.

Housing plenty of LAN ports, four 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet with LAN bypass support on LAN 2 and LAN , and either a built-in Intel® ultra low voltage Celeron® M or Intel Pentium® M low voltage pro-cessor, the ARK-3382 made an ideal solution to supply clean energy to Beijing for the 2008 Olympics and beyond.
