LITERARY CENTER

Ludlow avenue: an area full of life and character. The buildings, most built at the turn of the century, are similar in massing and structure while their styles are very eclectic, as well as the people that inhabit them. I designed a building with the intention of bringing together a lively community.

Creating a space in the area I played with the interaction of two elements. One form is orthagonal and similar in massing to the buildings in the area. The other form flows through the building as if to capture the spirit of the area. The conversation of these two forms create a series of spaces for a community to gather as well as an individual to reflect, read or write in a familiar environment.

Historic Italianate buildings line Ludlow Avenue. The buildings are similar in massing while the people and the colorful details on the building give the street personality and life.

GLORIFIEDRUINS

This structure features public spaces and private spaces. The public space includes a cafe, lecture hall and artist studios. The private space includes housing. Calhoun, to the north of the site is a street lined with commercial spaces while McMillan to the south of the site is a street lined with residen-tial spaces.

The buildings form was generated in an attempt to connect residential spac-es to the park and the public spaces to the bus stop.

As McMillan and Calhoun approach Vine street, the character and life of the street seems to die and one is sur-rounded by ruins. Faded memories of the glory that once was. To the North of the site there is an old church that has not been restored since the fire several years ago. The site features several ruins that are slowly being reclaimed by nature. It was my goal to create a structure that celebrates the reclaiming of man’s past achievements by nature.

Along McMillan, the street is lined with residential spaces. The area approaching the site from the west (University of Cincinnati campus) is also lively and feels like a safe place to live, even in a high crime area. There are many newer residential developments used as student housing.

Along Calhoun, the street is lined with storefronts that have shopping and restauraunts used primarily by college students. The area approaching the site from the west (University of Cincinnati campus) is very lively and feels safe even though surrounded by high crime areas.

PROBLEM- Calhoun and McMillan are very lively until ariving at the site. The area around the site is generally avoided by pedestrians.

Theres something beautiful about nature reclaiming a forgotten space.

Instead of ignoring the abandoned urban ruins surrounding the site, my goal is to celebrate them.

The site has a ruin in the center that contributes to the faded, yet enchanting vibe the area personifies.

One path connects the public spaces from Calhoun to the bus, while the other path connects the residential spaces to the park. The residential spaces have tree-like towers growing off the path.

Residential Path: a continuation of McMillan. The path floats off of the street into a canopy. On the journey home one feels as if they have risen above the crumbling city around them and have entered a sanctuary surrounded by nature.

Public Path: The public path guides the pedestrian through a grand underground city. Patches of light are let in through the vine-like structure above. Indoor continuation of Calhoun.

PLASTIC RUSH

Futurist studio. The assignment was to invent an extreme situation based on projections of possibilities for the future. Many major coastal cities are going to have to adapt to rising water levels over the next couple centuries.

Over the years garbage has collected in the currents. Today, the garbage patch in the Pacific, known as the Pacific Gyre, is the biggest. This patch consists of 90% plastic.

SCENARIO: -mass migration due to forces of nature -localized metropoli

In this scenario weather becomes so extreme that previous building methods and materials become obsolete.

Migration becomes necessary in order to avoid the constant hurricanes and instable climate. The ocean, which takes up 71% of earth’s surface, becomes the new frontier.

In the alternate universe, plastic becomes a highly sought after resource used to construct migrating pods.

This design uses both hard and soft plastics. In this scheme hard plastics are broken apart to create something similar to carbon fiber. They are wrapped around a standard inflatable “mold” and that is used to create the structure. The structure is then reinforced, with strips of plastic for cross bracing, then wrapped in soft plastics with tiny apertures for some ventilation while still protecting residents from the extreme weather.

41

42

The round structure is surrounded by 6 appendages that serve many purposes. They can be used for farming algae. They can also be used for migration by paddling to where the pod needs to be. Lastly, the strong and light nature of plastic allows these appendages to act as structure.

ARTISTRETREAT

This design is a result of a site analysis in an attempt to create a retreat for various artists. My design was inspired by Japanese architecture. The design features meandering paths that pene-trate the outer shell of each individual studio.

The dramatic sweeping gardens con-trast the modular nature of the studios structure. The studio has different lev-els of privacy as well as versatile space for all types of artists.

WIND AID

A very fulfilling summer was spent in Trujillo, Peru. WindAid is an organization that creates wind generators in order to power homes in impoverished villages in rural Peru.

I was able to learn the process of creating clean energy with wind, and also increase the efficiency of the design.

The team and I educated local children on the power of clean energy

GENSLER

While working for Gensler’s Houston firm I had the opportunity to work with a team on a cor-porate high rise.

In the dining hall of the building a laser cut stainless steel screen was proposed to the client in order to separate the dining area from the passage area. The wall was to create a physi-cal barrier while still allowing people to see through to the other spaces.

Inspiration was pulled from microscopic images in order to relate to the client’s line of busi-ness.

56

57

58

In a future design studio, as an exercise, I created an imaginative solution to an alternative future requiring people to travel due to forces of nature. Here are a two images created with pastels, colored pencil and digital techniques.
