As Fr. Jeff announced last weekend, Cardinal Dolan has appointed him to the faculty of Msgr. Far-rell High School on Staten Island. Though this comes as something of a surprise to all of us – in-cluding Fr. Jeff – this will be a blessing for the young men of Farrell. When Cardinal Dolan met with Fr. Jeff two weeks ago, he expressed the sincere hope that Fr. Jeff’s presence in the school would help to foster vocations to the priesthood. There’s no better ignition for that than an ener-getic and passionate young priest. Fr. Jeff left yesterday on a pilgrimage to Fatima; this had been planned for quite some time. As of this writing, we expect his assignment at Farrell to begin in early July, though that could change. Between Fathers’ Day and the GHS graduation, the latter part of June is quite busy already. So the plan is to have him back in the early fall to celebrate Mass and have a post-farewell party. At the same time, we are very happy to announce that Fr. Anthony Giacona has been assigned to St. John’s, effective the middle of June. Fr. Giacona is one of the priests ordained at St. Patrick’s Cathedral just last Saturday! I spoke with him this week, and he is eager and excited to move in, start meeting everyone, and get to work. His appointment to St. John’s is a special gift to the parish – there are only five newly-ordained diocesan priests this year. It’s also an affirmation that St. John’s is a place where the parishioners and staff will patiently help a new priest to get his bearings. Given these transitions, I am very conscious of the fact that St. John’s has gone through an inordi-nate number of clergy personnel changes over the last few years. By my count, this will be the sixth change in priests since mid-2014; many told me last weekend that the trend extends even farther back. Such frequent turnover is not good for the parish, as it poses a challenge in developing a connection with the priests; it’s also more than a little stressful for the staff. Both Fr. Peter and I had hoped that he would be able to stay for three years; when that didn’t come to pass, I had hoped for at least two years with Fr. Jeff before he was made a pastor. Obviously, such decisions are made by those far, far above my pay grade, but I have expressed my earnest hope and desire that Fr. Giacona remain here for three years at a minimum.
+ + + I’d like to make one last plug for this week’s cluster mission; details are on the cover of the bulletin. Please join us as many evenings as you can; there are many graces to be had!
+ + + At the 5:00pm Mass today, we will ask the special blessing of the Holy Spirit as we select four pa-rishioners to join the pastoral advisory council. I am grateful to those who have offered themselves for this service to the parish: Nancy Carey, Audrey Craghan, Eileen Dorian, Jim Iaquinto, Jim Langlois, Ken Obremski, Mark O’Hara, Paula Olson, and Rhoda Palmer. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann
